Forget about “Stop and Frisk.”The New York Police Department is now walking its beat encouraging people to update to Apple’s new operating system.  The iOS update was released just days ago on the new iPhones and on most existing Apple products. Despite some mild grumbling at first, Apple’s iOS7 has garnered mostly positive reviews for its aesthetic and usability improvements.

But the New York Police Department, along with other law enforcement agencies across the country like the security enhancements. The improved Activation Lock in particular, have police hoping the number of iPhone and iPad thefts will drop.

While it is too early to tell if Activation Lock will be a comprehensive solution to the epidemic of ‘Apple Picking’ crimes that have victimized iPhone and iPad owners around the world, we believe it is a step forward and strongly urge iPhone users to download iOS 7, and most importantly, ensure they utilize both an Apple ID and Find My iPhone.

NYPD are visiting Universities, setting up information centers near Apple Stores and handing out flyers on the streets of New York encouraging Apple users to upgrade their devises. This has increased in the wake of the new iOS update. Other law enforcement entities are following suit in the never-ending quest to stay one step ahead of the criminals.
