G. Scott Davis of Pennsylvania was “messing” with his loaded handgun when he fatally shot his 2-month-old daughter in the abdomen Christmas Eve.

District Attorney Craig Stedman told the publication the firearm’s discharge was “unintentional” — he said Davis pulled the trigger but apparently did not realize there was a round in the chamber. Davis was alone with his daughter at the time of the incident, according to officials.

He was arraigned Monday on charges of involuntary manslaughter, as well as misdemeanor counts of endangering a child and reckless endangerment. Davis’ attorney told Lancaster Online that his client plans to plead guilty to the charges, the most severe of which carries a potential 10-year maximum prison term.
