U.S. Senate candidate Greg Brannon of North Carolina misled two investors in a company he tried to launch, according to a jury, reports the Raleigh News & Observer.

The verdict against him came after eight hours of deliberation in a case spanned two weeks and will likely pose political problems for the Republican contender.

Brannon reacted in silence, bowing his head as the verdict was read. A co-defendant, Robert Rice, was cleared of responsibility in the case.

“I completely disagree with this verdict and feel that I was treated unfairly by the court,” Brannon said following the reading of the verdict. “I will defend my integrity and will be appealing this decision.
