“A mass casualty situation” is how it’s being described in Vilonia, Arkansas.

A spotter in Mayflower, Arkansas, 22 miles (35 km) northwest of Little Rock, reported a 1/2-mile wide tornado crossing Interstate 40 at about 7:30pm, the National Weather Service said.

At least one person was killed in a tornado in a small Oklahoma town in the northeast corner of the state, according to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Derek Derwin. Media and the National Weather Service reported that two people were killed.

An Ottawa County, Oklahoma, police dispatcher said a search and rescue effort was underway in Quapaw, but could not confirm reports of fatalities.

Ottawa County Emergency Management director Joe Dan Morgan said Quapaw , which has about 900 residents, was heavily damaged.

“Looks like about half of town got extensive damage as well as the fire department,” Mr Morgan said.
