A North Dakota parent got the Bennett Elementary School in Fargo, ND to pull the song from a talent show simply because a member of the Village People, who originally performed the song, dressed up as a Native American.

The school said students should dress up like the Village People for the performance, because the song would be performed by the entire first grade class, but the mother complained it would be “offensive” for children to come dressed to school like Native Americans. She explained, “Hopefully those people that are can make the right choices so all students of any culture and race won’t feel singled out or like their race is being stereotyped against.”

As a result of the complaint, the school, instead of waiving the costume requirement, pulled the song entirely.

His mother is Puerto Rican and his father is Lakota Sioux…..so what’s the issue? He IS a Native American so why can’t they be depicting someone who presented themself like that

If you have to ask, you just don’t understand. Take a look at the others, then look at the Indian character’s stereotypical warpaint and dress. It is NOT a traditional garb, but a cliche.

So let’s change your scenario to see if you would be offended:

“His mother is FROM SOUTH BOSTON and his father is IRISH…..so what’s
the issue? He IS a IRISH-American so why can’t they be depicting
someone who presented AS A POOR, CATHOLIC, IRA BOMB-THROWING POTATO EATER WITH BAD TEETH AND A LEPRECHAUN HAT.”

“His mother is FROM CHICAGO and his father is SOUTH AFRICA…..so what’s
the issue? He IS a AFRICAN-American so why can’t they be depicting
someone who presented AS A BONE-IN-THE-NOSE, WITCHDOCTOR CANNIBAL WHO DOES A STEPPIN’ FETCHIT ROUTINE.”

“His mother is FROM NEW YORK and his father is JERUSALEM…..so what’s
the issue? He IS a JEWISH-American so why can’t they be depicting
someone who presented AS A RABBINICAL JEWISH RABBI BANKER WITH HAIR CURLS EATING PASTRAMI AND SINGING BARBARA STREISAND TUNES.”

(Well, I can understand why Village People fans also sing Barbara Streisand tunes…)
