The purpose, says President Obama, is “to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.”  The White House released this statement:

Today, consistent with the War Powers Resolution, the President transmitted a report notifying the Congress that up to approximately 275 U.S. military personnel are deploying to Iraq to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. The personnel will provide assistance to the Department of State in connection with the temporary relocation of some staff from the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad to the U.S. Consulates General in Basra and Erbil and to the Iraq Support Unit in Amman. These U.S. military personnel are entering Iraq with the consent of the Government of Iraq. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad remains open, and a substantial majority of the U.S. Embassy presence in Iraq will remain in place and the embassy will be fully equipped to carry out its national security mission.

been in a situation similar to this…
You can fire when fired upon when the OK is given by your CO
      after
he receives permission from his CO
      after
he receives permission from the host country’s designated liaison
      after
he receives permission from his CO
      after
he receives permission from his CO
      after it’s been confirmed
you might be under unfriendly fire
      upon approval of
a personal adviser of the host country’s ruler
      once
the host country’s ruler is located and
      approves return fire.

didn’t work too good back then, however it do look good on paper and charts when prepared for media interviews by ‘his excellency’ explaining how the cooperation between our two nations will build a lasting peace and defeat our now mutual enemies.

remember that when we send 10,000 re-trainers who will be guarded and protected by the trainees who they will be sent to train.
I don’t doubt for one moment that they won’t be training inside an area that the enemy is not allowed to be in while training as ‘his excellency’ surely doesn’t want any harm to befall an American who has been invited to his country to train his troops how to protect themselves. However, if in fact the enemy does become lawless and breaks the law by entering into an area they are forbidden to be in while training troops on how to defeat them, rest assured, it’s all Obama’s fault for not doing it sooner!

Reason number 1 why combat troops MUST be sent to protect ‘trainers’.

These 275 troops are exclusively to reinforce protecting our U.S. Embassy & diplomats “to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.”
