No, the problem isn’t that it’s Chicago. The problem isn’t Barack Obama because it’s his home. The problem is what is used to shoot people. That would be guns. One woman was killed while sitting on her porch. One man was killed in front of a hair salon.

Shambreyh R. Barfield, 21, was sitting with a friend at a two-flat in the 3800 block of West Monroe Street Thursday afternoon when four or five masked men drove past in a blue sedan and fired, apparently aiming for someone else, police said.

In other shootings:

• A 21-year-old man walked into Mercy Hospital and Medical Center about 5:20 a.m. and told police he had been shot near the corner of 47th and Ada streets in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. It was not clear if police found a crime scene there. He had a thigh wound and was expected to survive.

• Around the same time about a mile away, an 18-year-old man was shot in the thigh and brought to the University of Illinois Medical Center by his relatives, according to Police News Affairs Officer Janel Sedevic. He was transferred to Stroger Hospital, where he was treated and released…

• A person walked into Saint Bernard Hospital and Healthcare Center about 2:45 a.m. and told police he was shot in the leg the day before in the 8600 block of South Racine Avenue. Details were not available.

• A boy and a girl were shot in 4400 block of South Dearborn Street about 3:10 p.m., police said. The boy, 14, was shot in the thigh and the girl, 13, suffered a graze wound to the thigh, police said.

Gun control in the windy city has proved to be a major success story of the Emanuel administration

  2. R.J. Carter July 4th, 2014 at 7:40 pm

They should put a strict ban on guns in Chicago.
    Oh, wait…

Damn NRA keeps handing out guns to gang bangers!

So what is the solution in this situation?

    • Carla Akins July 5th, 2014 at 11:03 am

I don’t know. We do know that most criminals get their hands on guns either by stealing them or from less than scrupulous gun owners. I don’t think there’s a disagreement here. If gun owner’s were required to (not just advised) to properly secure their weapons in a gun safe, if the background check were more comprehensive and also applied to private sales, surely it would reduce the number of guns that criminals get a hold of. Yes, it would take a while for this to all filter down but we have to start somewhere.

Perhaps if the original owner had to prove he lost his gun legitimately ( must file a police report) and be held accountable for lax storage or sales. These are just a couple of thoughts, I’m sure others have more ideas. Does it become a pain in the ass? Sure, but all the responsible gun owners I know, and I know many – would not balk at taking these extra steps.

I would like to see statistics on how many of these gang related gun deaths(the OVERWHELMNG majority of gun deaths in this country) were committed by a handgun that originated from a private individual. It seems as though that is who is being most targeted by new legislation, not dealers, wholesalers, manufacturers, or the criminals themselves. It is the least culpable in this whole equation who are being legislated the most.

So where do you think these illegal guns come from?

      • Red Eye Robot July 6th, 2014 at 3:46 pm

so essentially your position is, Since cracking down on law abiding gun owners via gun control has not only failed to make a dent in crime but crime has become worse, We must crack down harder and criminalize the Law abiding. Perhaps then the criminals will stop killing

        • Carla Akins July 6th, 2014 at 4:32 pm

You should consider taking a reading comprehension course. Responsible people, gun owners or not are willing to take extra steps to do the right thing and make everyone safer. It comes with being a responsible person and not a narcissistic ass.

and while law enforcement devotes more time and manpower to pushing paper and keeping records on people who have done nothing illegal, they have less manpower for actual law enforcement, So the criminals continue to kill and rob unabated. When are you people going to realize that focusing law enforcement efforts on people who already obey the law does nothing to reduce crime. Your half baked notions are equivalent to the highway patrol stopping people who are driving the speed limit and ignoring the guy doing 90 while drunk. Chicago has already made it nearly impossible to buy a handgun in the city limits and it has become one of America’s most violent cities. That didn’t happen because Gun owners obeyed the law

So, let’s do nothing. It will fix it itself. Anybody that wants a gun should be able to purchase one without regard to whether or not they should own one. Sounds like a great idea and incredibly responsible.
