A Utah mom wants the public to know that she was shamed by a middle school principal when she was asked not to breastfeed in the school lunchroom.

Mother-of-two Andrea Scannell said she wants people to know what happened to her, because ‘this kind of shaming, this kind of bullying, prevents other breastfeeding women from going out in public, from feeding their baby’.

Scannell attends the lunch program Mount Logan Middle School, which her son attends, and will usually breastfeed her young daughter while there because of the timing, according to Fox 13.

Last week she was given a letter by one of the worker’s and told: ‘I highly encourage you to read this.’

The letter, was signed by Mount Logan Middle School principal Michael E. Monson.

The letter said the school had received ‘concern from multiple patrons’ at the lunch program.

‘The concern is with the exposed breastfeeding of your baby,’ the letter said.

‘As a public school, we have children of all ages attending the lunch program.

‘We also have numerous adults who share a wide variety of personal views and views on raising their own children.’

Carla is having a “neener” type of day!

Me too. You’re not alone. And I still don’t haz a car. Grr!

            Have you heard anything yet?

          • Anomaly 100 August 4th, 2014 at 4:50 pm

Just now. It’s the computer so it will take a few days and hundreds of delicious dollars.

My cat is really broken, too.

          • Carla Akins August 4th, 2014 at 9:14 pm

Oh, that’d awful. There were so many things more likely to be the cause. Good news, it’ll be good for another decade.

  3. Pistol-Packing August 4th, 2014 at 10:20 am

I tend to agree with this. this is not about shaming or bullying. I dont believe this is the right place to do so. Now, I dont now if she is covered or not. But I can understand why some are upset about it.

On a different note, My wife and I were at a local concert on the beach this past week, and the women adjacent to us was breast feeding. She mad no attempt to be inconspicuous about it, nor did she make any attempt to partially cover herself. So, basically you had her fully exposed. (Not that I minded =)…)

    • Anomaly 100 August 4th, 2014 at 11:12 am

Are you actually saying that you find it a threat if she open carries her breasts in order to feed her baby?

      • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 11:15 am

Not so much a threat, but it will definitely cause a distraction, because it’s not the most common sight.

To that end, to desensitize future generations to the point where they do NOT find this unsettling or even attractive, I propose that all clothing be outlawed for everyone for the next 60 years, at which time we will revisit the need for apparel based on the feelings of those extant at the time of the vote.

        • Anomaly 100 August 4th, 2014 at 11:27 am

Uh…I refuse to walk around naked. It would upset too many people.

          • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 11:29 am

Someone’s got to take the first step. The future depends on you!

          • Anomaly 100 August 4th, 2014 at 11:37 am

I don’t think my ears could take the people screaming in horror.

          • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 11:42 am

That’s their problem. 60 years of total nudity everywhere would eliminate that reaction. See, this plan has SO MANY POSITIVES! Sacrifices (of eardrums and retinas) have to be made for the greater good.

          • Anomaly 100 August 4th, 2014 at 12:32 pm

They’d need to see a psychiatrist for PTSD after that visual.

          • Robert Johnston August 4th, 2014 at 3:30 pm

Let them scream–it’s all in THEIR mind!
Personally, I have to stay covered (I get sunburn too easily)…but if I could, I’d love to go out in the buff on certain days.
And if anybody has a problem with it…too bad, so sad!

You keep saying that, however my experience has been – no matter how small or large, droopy – whatever. Men don’t don’t care. Boobies!!! About covers it. You’re a hit,and virtually always get your way.

            q 😉

      • Pistol-Packing August 4th, 2014 at 11:35 am

Not a threat at all. I breast fed until I was 13… =)

I dont find this as a threat at all. But I do believe a little precaution could be used. Such as just a simple blanket or cloth to drape over her shoulder would have been appropriate. This particular woman I spoke of was letting it all hang out. And I think my opinion about allowing women to go “Topless” is fairly well documented. I AM ALL FOR IT !!!

        • Anomaly 100 August 4th, 2014 at 11:37 am

It’s a natural thing. I find people who shun women who are breastfeeding to be more offensive.

        • MIAtheistGal August 4th, 2014 at 1:31 pm

Do you like to eat completely covered under a blanket? I thought not.

          • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 1:46 pm

You’ve obviously never been around when I have a fresh bag of Double-Stuf Oreos.

          • MIAtheistGal August 4th, 2014 at 1:51 pm

Oh, doesn’t the blanket fuzz get in your milk, though?

          • Pistol-Packing August 4th, 2014 at 1:55 pm

no one is saying you have to cover the whole child.

          • MIAtheistGal August 4th, 2014 at 2:21 pm

So you think covering baby’s feet will do the trick? So drying tells me it’s the portion by baby’s head that is the problem.

I’ll gladly rephrase. Would you like to eat with your entire head covered with a blanket?

          • Pistol-Packing August 4th, 2014 at 3:40 pm

what on earth are you talking about ???? Or should I quote a line from Forest Gump?? “are you stupid or something”

If a woman is lifting her shirt, her boob will be covered, if she is pulling down her shirt to expose her breast. it is not that difficult to have a small blanket or towel that she could use to lay over her breast for it to be not as exposed. it is not that difficult of a concept to grasp.

          • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 3:47 pm

            Decorum!

          • MIAtheistGal August 4th, 2014 at 3:57 pm

And baby’s nose and mouth are covered by that blanket in the picture. Thank you for proving what I was saying. I wouldn’t want to eat with a blanket over my head, face, mouth, nose, eyes, none of it.

          • Pistol-Packing August 4th, 2014 at 4:19 pm

here, considering you want to be “Hyper-Critical” when what I mentioned is not that difficult of a concept. I propose the following istead. All women who want to breast feed in public, must don one of these on their children. How about we go that route instead.

          • MIAtheistGal August 4th, 2014 at 4:28 pm

Yes, because clearly that’s what I meant. /s

You’re so not worth any more of my time. Good day.

          • Pistol-Packing August 4th, 2014 at 5:02 pm

That’s alright, I understand basic concepts escape your grasp. So no worries

          • MIAtheistGal August 4th, 2014 at 4:23 pm

And calling someone stupid because they disagree with you is a sign you have no argument. Not to mention on the level of a child.

    • Larry Schmitt August 4th, 2014 at 11:15 am

The end of your remark makes breastfeeding about sex, which is exactly why a lot of women are reluctant to feed in public in the first place.

      • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 11:17 am

If we quit playing with boobs during sex, they’ll become less attached to the notion of sex. So that’s another law we need in place to help with the process. No more boobplay during intercourse with a woman, people.

        • Pistol-Packing August 4th, 2014 at 11:41 am

        • Robert Johnston August 4th, 2014 at 3:26 pm

I do hope that was snark, mate!

In case nobody stayed awake during sex-ed classes:
The human breast (male and female) serves a dual purpose. Not only are they for nourishing infants (in men, this is a rudimentary function), but they are also secondary sex organs (in both genders).
And breast stimulation during foreplay not only relaxes the partner receiving it (while stiumlating the one giving it), but can also lead to orgasm on it’s own. Rare, I know…but it does happen.
From my own experience, spending some time in breast play (more than thirty seconds-per-breast, folks–for BOTH genders) leads to much more enjoyable sex for both partners.

Certainly, we need to remember what the human breast is for…but we must remember ALL of it’s wonderful functions. As it is, we have become total boobs when it comes to boobs…especially when a mother is feeding her infant.

Women were nourishing their kiddoes in this manner since The Dawn Of Humanity.

So why is it so wrong in this day-and-age?
          Are we really THAT infantile?

          • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 3:45 pm

            Yes. Yes we are.

I point to high school. I was traveling with a group of students to a JETS competition (Junior Engineers and Technicians Society), and a gaggle of us boys were in one room enjoying unfettered access to late-night Cinemax. Every time a topless scene came up, someone was appointed to alert the rest of the group. “Boobs! Boobs!”

I then stood up and pointed out to all present: “Gentlemen. This is beneath us. We are the intellectuals of our school, of our class. To jump up all excited and shout ‘Boobs!’ is against what we should all stand for.”

I sat down and concluded. “They’re called ‘mammaries.’ Use the correct nomenclature.”

For the rest of the night, we pointed and called out “Mammaries! Mammaries!”

Slaps you. DONT you dare. Dear Gods I get a lot of joy from my boobs.

      • Pistol-Packing August 4th, 2014 at 11:36 am

I have no issues about breast feeding in public. But as I mentioned, she made no attempt to be discrete about it either.

      • Bianca Bradley August 5th, 2014 at 6:44 pm

Oh for crying out loud. Boobs whether feeding or not are nice to look at. Of course he enjoyed himsrlf anf yes it was about sex. So what?

That’s like yelling at someone looking at tatoos and peircings and enjoying the aesthetic.

  4. R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 10:24 am

Well, it’s a middle school. It’s not like it’s an environment where there are a bunch of hormone-addled adolescent boys who will snicker, giggle, and act inappropriately with other girls because they saw a naked boob in real life instead of a magazine on the Internet.

    • mea_mark August 4th, 2014 at 10:34 am

Maybe if we had more stuff like this going on in schools our children wouldn’t grow-up with so many misconceptions and hang-ups about sex and it’s role in society. This is after all a very real and important part of life. Why should it be hidden and not exposed?

      • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 10:56 am

Maybe for the same reason we have gender-segregated restrooms?

        • mea_mark August 4th, 2014 at 11:01 am

Taking in nutrients and expelling waste are at opposite ends of the spectrum. Change the babies diaper in the restroom, yeah I can buy into that, eating and feeding in public should be acceptable at any age.

          • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 11:06 am

The point wasn’t that you do another activity in a different room, but that rooms that serve the same functions are separated for use by gender. If the lunchroom were at an all-girls school, do you think there would be the same issue?

          • M D Reese August 4th, 2014 at 11:07 am

            Yes.

          • R.J. Carter August 4th, 2014 at 11:08 am

We’ll have to disagree on that one unless we can find a precedent of it happening without issue or happening with a warning. I personally think it would be ignored.

          • mea_mark August 4th, 2014 at 11:11 am

In Utah, the Capitol of Misogyny, definitely yes.

  5. causeican August 4th, 2014 at 10:53 am

Some on Liberaland think that a school lunch room is not a place for a baby to eat. Really? Those children you are worried about get more education from each other than adults still care to admit.
An example of proper behavior will not hurt them.

  6. arc99 August 4th, 2014 at 10:56 am

    Gun in public, a-ok.

    Breasts must be hidden.

What the f*ck is wrong with this country?

It’s even richer that this happened in Utah–where women-as-baby-makers is highly encouraged.

It’s Utah. practically the capital of the world in puritanism…

  9. craig7120 August 4th, 2014 at 11:44 am

Breast feeding babies keeps them from doing the thing that annoys me about babies, their crying. Feed away mom, dad is here to keep the 14 year old baby boys quiet.

  10. Foundryman August 4th, 2014 at 11:53 am

Took the grandkids to Legoland in Chicago this summer, low and behold there was a young woman feeding her baby on a bench. There were no gawkers, no protests no group of inquisitive kids hanging around, nothing. People normally know the whats, whys and whens behind feeding babies. If someone gets upset about it, thats more a personal problem about boobs than anything else.

    • Bunya August 4th, 2014 at 2:06 pm

Chicago IS a liberal town. Drive a few miles east to Indiana and you’ll see outrage against a mother breastfeeding – no doubt next to a “guns ‘n amm” store.

  11. MIAtheistGal August 4th, 2014 at 1:33 pm

What a perfect teaching moment wasted. Yes, little boys of all ages, the purpose of female breasts is to provide nourishment for babies, not to be your handles during sex.
