The Florida pastor found out the night before that the funeral he was about to conduct was for a gay person. (h/t Crooks and Liars)

Kendall Capers says he was told the service was canceled the night before he husband was to be buried. He says the pair were partners for 17 years and married last year in Maryland. Evans died at home after a 4-year battle with a rare illness called Amyloidosis, which destroys organs in the body.

“Everyone who knew us knew about our relationship,” he said. “We didn’t keep secrets.”

But the pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa didn’t know the pair were gay until the newspaper obituary named Capers as the surviving “husband.”

The pastor, T.W. Jenkins, said his church preaches against gay marriage.

“Based on our preaching of the scripture, we would have been in error to allow the service in our church,” Jenkins said. “I’m not trying to condemn anyone’s lifestyle, but at the same time, I am a man of God, and I have to stand up for my principles.”

Just wait until he finds out Jesus was gay.

    • Hirightnow August 8th, 2014 at 10:54 pm

32 year old Jewish guy who wasn’t married, hung around with a bunch of dudes, told them to eat of His body…..

  2. mea_mark August 8th, 2014 at 7:06 pm

A pastor and a jerk. Where’s the love? Oh, that’s right, your jesus is all about discrimination, separation and hate. Sorry, I forgot, thanks for the reminder.

    • burqa August 8th, 2014 at 7:19 pm

I agree with your first 2 sentences. This is just awful. It’s disgusting.
No, Jesus wasn’t what you said. That was just you tossing in a lie for some reason or another.

      • jasperjava August 8th, 2014 at 8:06 pm

Mea_Mark said “Your” Jesus. Not Jesus of Nazareth. Conservative “Christians” have created God in their own image, as bigoted and narrow-minded as they are.

      • mea_mark August 8th, 2014 at 9:15 pm

I didn’t capitalize “your jesus” for a reason.

  3. tiredoftea August 8th, 2014 at 7:14 pm

“…I am a man of God, and I have to stand up for my principles.” Oh, that would be the ones where dead people are gay?

    • Carla Akins August 9th, 2014 at 5:56 am

Whatever happened to “love the sinner hate the sin” sentiment?

      • Bunya August 9th, 2014 at 5:38 pm

That statement is used when one is trying to mask their hatred.
Or if they’re trying to launder their hatred through their god.

  4. Obewon August 8th, 2014 at 7:46 pm

His Baptist devotees were married last year in the eyes of his Lord and Savior! The pastor, T.W. Jackass, said his church preaches against his lord and savior. No surprise there!

  5. Anomaly 100 August 8th, 2014 at 7:53 pm

My BFF’s brother died last year. There was a similar problem.

  6. KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker August 8th, 2014 at 7:57 pm

The Flying Spaghetti Monster doesn’t care about your sexual orientation. It doesn’t judge you on your ethnicity, your gender or cultural customs. Most of all the FSM doesn’t spread lies, hate and fear. It’s not bigoted or hateful and never promises an imaginary nirvana whilst preying on the vulnerable and begging for money.
Organized religion has caused too much damage in our world for far too long.

I don’t know…the Reformed Boyardians are O.K., but agree with you if they’re Orthodox.

  7. Larry Schmitt August 8th, 2014 at 7:59 pm

Yes, you don’t want to get any of that icky gay on you at the funeral. Might start lusting after your brother in law.

    • tiredoftea August 8th, 2014 at 8:59 pm

Yeah, probably too late for that!

  8. mrsgunka August 8th, 2014 at 9:06 pm

Wonder if this Pastor would turn away his child’s funeral if he/she was gay? Don’t these people have a brain in their head? I guess the guy thinks he is God and needs to pass judgement himself. Curious, wonder if church attendance is going up or down with this kind of thing. Know it was dropping fast a few years ago. Have these Mega/Fundie Churches picked up the slackers? So sad!

  9. Spada August 8th, 2014 at 9:06 pm

Jesus is all about “believing in him” and the Holy Father for the pursuit of good, and that’s it. So many followers are arrogant idiots.

    • Guy Lauten August 8th, 2014 at 11:15 pm

Pride Pride Pride. Light years away from the teachings of Christ.

      • Spada August 9th, 2014 at 7:18 am

Pride is the problem. Every abysmal person can say “Thank God” because it’s widespread cliche.
Following an ancient book, that caused a race (?) of people to become despised, anyone, any religion, who doesn’t follow Jesus, to be shunned. What is very fictional to me is Jesus’s humbleness, yet that is his best trait.

“Believe in the Father, and that’ll lead you to salvation”. And I get my sickness healed.
HUH?! How is that inspiring me?

    • fahvel August 9th, 2014 at 3:14 am

ALL followers are idiots without a shred of self.

I constantly find an excuse to spread the gospel of Brother Ray! I f the music biz was a meritocracy, Ray would be like the Beatles, and no one would know who Kanye is!

      • RioBravoHombre August 9th, 2014 at 2:01 pm

Tell me how you like this, Hi, my friend. I saw that you are no longer under the thumb of the state….I got off supervision, in 2012, and it was sweet to be free! Seeing as how I’m a white guy in west Texas, I was given probation, and I was told not to worry about drug testing, seeing as how I’m a business/ranch owner. Funny…no one with brown skin in court that day was asked if they would like to skip their 6 months of pee-tests!
Check this ditty…it’s good, clean fun, us Texans love y’all!

Anything to help Willie with his IRS problems!

      • RioBravoHombre August 9th, 2014 at 1:56 pm

Willie? No….this is Ray Wylie! But, you’re close, they’re both Texas boys!

        • tiredoftea August 9th, 2014 at 3:17 pm

Then we’ll help Ray with his likely IRS problems.

          • RioBravoHombre August 9th, 2014 at 3:27 pm

Ray’s not in Willie’s tax bracket. Willie sold his COUNTRY CLUB AND GOLF COURSE to settle with the IRS….Ray has no such assets.

          • tiredoftea August 9th, 2014 at 3:38 pm

Willie’s still in IRS trouble, I think. I’m just assuming that Ray hasn’t declared every cash concert, tee shirt and CD sale and may need our help sometime soon. You know, the IRS, it’s not just for 501(c) 4’s anymore!

  11. Hirightnow August 8th, 2014 at 10:48 pm

How many times in the “Holy Bible”® does Jesus say “Except when” or “Unless they’re”?

    • neworleans878 August 8th, 2014 at 11:02 pm

  15. Pundit456 August 9th, 2014 at 9:24 am

Those of us who are not members or supporters of the lgbt subculture recognize this as just another attempt to shame Christians. Clearly whomever made the arrangements was not forthright with the minister.
Capers does not indicate that either he or the deceased had any prior relationship with this church. Nor does he indicate that the deceased attempted to join the church or confess his sins prior to death.
Though it is not indicated, a reasonable supposition is that had Capers not asserted marital status, the minister might have officiated over the funeral; sexual deviancy notwithstanding.
If Capers was only interested in securing a Christian burial for the deceased, There are myriad churches that cater to and or are run by lgbt members.
This was a stunt that elicits no sympathy for Capers because we are not fooled.

    • RioBravoHombre August 9th, 2014 at 2:11 pm

Christian haters are always the biggest whiners. Thanks for demonstrating that fact! lolololol!

    • Bunya August 9th, 2014 at 5:23 pm

Christians don’t need any assistance in the shaming department. They are doing fine all by themselves.

    • tiredoftea August 9th, 2014 at 9:25 pm

So called “Christians” have no shame in their pursuit of moral superiority in contravention of their leader’s teachings.

    • veggiedude August 10th, 2014 at 10:19 am

I bet this is just an echo of 50 years ago, when the pastor found out the husband was black.

      • Pundit456 August 12th, 2014 at 1:56 pm

Doubtful; and, the implied analogy is ludicrous. Moreover, in all likelihood an interracial couple would attend a church that embraced interracial couples; because despite their races, which they did not choose, they, as normal people, can make intelligent decisions.

        • Dez August 28th, 2014 at 12:51 pm

I chose neither to be bi or black. Don’t speak for me bigot!!

          • Pundit456 September 20th, 2014 at 9:04 pm

Race is biological; sexual attraction is psychological.
People experience myriad attractions, both appropriate and inappropriate, however mentally healthy human beings posses the capacity to choose whether or not to act on any given attraction; propriety notwithstanding.
Moreover, gay, “bi”, trans, etc., are all labels people “choose” to ascribe to themselves and for which there exists no recognized method of proving or disproving nor any inclination to develop one due to lack of relevance.
Regardless of whatever delusion to which you choose to subscribe, this comment should be sufficient to convince you that I deal in fact and that name calling is ineffectual.

          • Dez September 20th, 2014 at 10:04 pm

You have shown no facts as usual for bigots to hide their hate. Unless your psychic you have no right to tell me what I think or feel about my race or sexuality. Sexual attraction is both physical and psychological. When you are attracted to someone you react with a fast heart rate and become forgetful for example. It is merely your personal opinion whether homosexuality or bisexuality is appropriate or not. That is usually cover for religious bigots that think wrongly their beliefs with sexuality are factual. You will not find any major medical association to agree with you and study after study has shown sexuality can not be changed nor should it be tried due to established negative consequences. This is why reparative therapy is denounced by any legitimate doctor. So again bigot don’t tell me how I should feel about being black and bi unless your psychic and you read my mind. Pseudoscience seems to be to your liking.

          • Pundit456 September 24th, 2014 at 5:28 pm

The mouth nor the anus is a sex organ. Science has determined no purpose for either to be used for sexual activity other than depraved sexual gratification; which is not normal human sexual behavior. lgbt is part of a segment of society that derives sexual gratification by deviant, perverse, degenerate means. Believing appropriate sexual behavior to be a matter of opinion is testament to lgbt refusal to recognize boundaries; because to them sexual gratification is paramount.
While so-called “bisexual” people may engage in normal sexual intercourse they are also a conduit that transfers maladies from the lgbt subculture to unsuspecting normal people.
It is a biological fact that the purpose of sexual intercourse is reproduction; in that reproduction is the only result of sexual intercourse that cannot be normally achieved by any other means.
I did not state or imply that you do or should feel anyway about anything because I don’t care. It was you who chose to engage me and I simply responded. Your contrived inferences portend an inability to provide a valid intelligent rebuttal.

          • Dez September 24th, 2014 at 6:02 pm

Yes it is. The whole body can be used for sex. It’s your personal opinion and not fact. Both women and men enjoy anal sex and find it very enjoyable with consenting partners. Just because you are not into does not make it wrong. Also lesbians and heteros have anal and oral sex. You seem to think sex is only for procreation, which is incorrect. Sex can be for fun or making babies depending on the people involved. Again you have not shown any evidence or proof. for your personal bigotry LGBT. Bisexuals do not transfer maladies. Like heterosexuals and homosexuals, bisexuality is a sexual orientation in which a person is attracted to both genders. Sometimes they are physically attracted to both genders, but can only love one gender. Depends on the person. LGBT is normal. Homosexuality as been found in many species of animals. It’s clear you are a bigot that is letting his hate and ignorance of LGBT to push hatred toward them. Nothing you have said is supported by any major medical association. If it were you would have linked to a study or anything factual. Please educate yourself out of your bigotry and hate.
