The Polish couple, vacationing in Portugal, decided to take selfies while standing on a cliff.

The couple and their children had been visiting cliffs at Cabo da Roca when the tragic incident occurred, WILX 10 reports. They fell from the cliff top into the Atlantic Ocean, where rescue workers were eventually able to retrieve their bodies. The couple’s children are now reportedly in the care of Polish diplomats, and have visited with psychologists.

Sadly, this isn’t the first time a selfie has turned fatal. Earlier this month, we reported on the man in Mexico who died while taking a selfie with a gun.

Those poor kids. I feel so badly, I’m even going to bypass the obvious joke.

I used to live near a beach where several tourists–sometimes whole families–were washed out to sea each year while standing with their backs to the water while having their pictures taken. The beach was clearly posted.

That must have been awful to witness.

It got worse. There was one time when a young boy was swept out–you could see him struggling in the surf. A news helicopter was on scene and hovered around him and filmed him drowning. They actually won an award for their coverage. It made me sick.

I would think that government would put up fences, or some type of deterrent, to prevent this from happening again. My heart goes out to the small children
