A Florida grandmother shot and critically wounded her 7-year-old grandson early Tuesday after she mistook him for an intruder who had broken into her home, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

[su_center_ad]63-year-old Linda Maddox and her twin grandsons were sleeping in a bedroom after her son — the boy’s father — had left for work at the postal service, deputies said.

According to what Maddox told deputies, she placed a chair against the bedroom door handle for extra protection while they slept.

The Associated Press reports that when the grandmother heard the chair sliding against the wood floor at about 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, she assumed it was an intruder. So, she  grabbed a loaded .22-caliber revolver she kept by the bed and fired one shot in the dark toward the door.  With children in the house.

It was just seconds later that she heard her grandson Tyler Maddox scream, according to deputies.

The little boy was shot once in the upper body. He was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Cristal Bermudez Nunez said that the grandmother felt unsafe when her son would work overnight, so she would bring her grandchildren into the bedroom with her and block the door with a leaning chair.

She said deputies have been called to the house 12 times since 2011, including a call about a suspicious person on June 20, 2011, and a suspicious vehicle last Jan. 2. None of those calls turned into anything significant, she said.

Wait for it — No charges have been filed against Maddox. [su_sky_ad]

Where’s a good granny with a gun when you need her?

Heh, there’s something to be said about competency and gun owners. 🙁

Why do you have a Picture of Irene Ryan with this story.

      Granny?

JIC you’ve missed recently posted post – this is kinda like the Host sense of humor in posting a picture of someone totally unrelated to the facts. Won’t surprise me if he figures out a way to get a photo of Rickles slipped in somewhere, maybe in a post about women’s private places in Dallas or Huston, NC?

This is because (see the last line of the post), she was not charged, therefore there is no picture of her, so I went with one of a granny. The Granny.

will make a good commercial for children’s Kevlar sleepwear though.

‘how many times have you critically wounded one of your offspring’s little rugra-uh lovely children while trying to get some sleep ?’

Hey, Disqus is finally allowing a discussion on the role of downvotes. Since you’ve expressed an opinion on the subject before, I was wondering if you’d want to put in your 2¢ worth? Here’s the link: https://disqus.com/home/discussion/channel-discussdisqus/downvotes

nice line, just wondering if it’d work about 16 to 17 times? Oldest and next to youngest are OK, with one being on the last nerve, rest of ’em; “granpa will not always strive to be nice with them that keeps ratting him out.”

Somebody tell us again why it’s a good idea to have a loaded gun handy, so when you wake from a sound sleep, you can grab it and shoot at something you can’t see, because you thought you heard a sound you “assumed was an intruder.”

I’m horrified she shot into the dark and hit her grandson. I’m pissed off beyond all boundaries the woman hasn’t been arrested.

Florida has that wonderful “stand yer ground” law which okays her to shoot with impunity. Maybe this law is Florida’s way of controlling the population.

Oh lord. I get it now-it’s the equivalent of an NRA page! Just that it’s ANTI-everything.
