As if there were not enough tension already in St. Louis and the surrounding area, a St. Louis police officer shot and killed a man Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred outside of a 5-Star Market just before 1:00 p.m. local time today. According to police, the man was attempting to rob the convenience store and was wielding a knife. The store owner argued with the man and when police arrived, he refused to let go of the knife. He then threatened two officers who fired on the suspect, killing him.[su_center_ad]

He was pronounced dead at the scene. No police officers were injured during the incident.

Police also say the suspect was acting “erratically” and according to some witnesses, told police to “Shoot me. Kill me now.” The Wire spoke with legal expert Jens David Ohlin, who is a professor of law at the Cornell Law School. He explained that if, indeed, the suspect said “Shoot me” or “kill me now” this would be deemed “death by cop.” “When someone deliberately provokes a cop to get them to kill them, as kind of a suicide rather than killing themselves, that is death by cop.”

Why don’t they shoot at his feet if they think he wants to be shot. Is disabling someone not allowed, is killing how cops are supposed to handle things? The system is broken. I fear the protests may spread tonight and be worse. The Authorities appear to be doing things wrong on a consistent basis.

given enough time, I’m sure they’ll be able to find an iron ore vein, build a foundry and make a knife. They may want to take some prints on scotch tape – just in case the corpse is too decomposed by then. (Feds use to be interested in little things like that, hard to say anymore, they seem to enjoy backing off from WHITE RACIST THUG TERRORIST and ensure they remain heavily armed – even after a FAILED REPUBLICAN WHITE ARMED REVOLT).

good thing some Chinese Accountants are still using an Abacus when counting human rights violations – US law enforcement might be overloading the digital system.

Sirhan Sirhan, John Hinckley, mark david chapman, Jack Ruby all fired shots and were taken alive with a gun in their hand.

“Dallas police on Tuesday identified the man accused of shooting at police and firefighters Monday as 60-year-old Douglas Lee Leguin of Corinth.” this happened last week and he’s a white guy. he also held an interview with a news station while in jail. not a single mark on him. even the SWAT was called in.

The entire ni99er species must be exterminated; one at a time or thousands at once.

Poor, hungry, can’t get a job, can’t go to school, take your pick or just say all of the above. Inequality in America is out of control and the Oligarchy own the banks and wield most of the power. The Oligarchy don’t care about the people or the world, just what appeals to them at any given moment.

mental illness? funny how even with the description of his behavior, no one seems to have afforded him that excuse. and we all know if it were a white guy acting out that way, this would have been an entirely dfferent outcome. just sayin’

  6. mfr4 August 19th, 2014 at 6:56 pm

I don’t really know much about it but aren’t there things like mace, pepper spray, tasers, and other really nasty things that would give the cop as much satisfaction (they could even be fitted to sound like a gun I suppose, if that helps) without killing the guy. This is crazy. Is there any way it won’t lead to more violence, death and injury.

Officers are trained with the “21 foot” edged weapon kill zone standard. In other words, person who has decided to stab you with a knife within 21 feet can do so before you make the decision, draw your weapon, point and fire. This situation for better or for worse has been demonstrated time and time again in a court of law. Action is faster than reaction. In other words the assailant has already made up his/her mind. It takes more time to react, therefore officers often have made their decision ahead of time on what they will do in a given situation, based upon their training.

There is however new evidence and opinion that disputes that old belief. http://www.policeone.com/edged-weapons/articles/102828-Edged-Weapon-Defense-Is-or-was-the-21-foot-rule-valid-Part-1/

Officers are not trained to shoot to kill or to wound. They are trained to make the suspect stop doing what he or she is doing. In this case it’s deadly force with an edged weapon. Police officers are trained to aim for center body mass as that is the biggest target.
I have dealt with three suspects with edge weapons. I didn’t shoot any of them, but clearly no two situations are the same. I am not about to second guess this event.
One must also consider what could have happened if the officers had not arrived.

“They are trained to make the suspect stop doing what he or she is doing.”

Well I suppose when the suspect is openly presenting himself as a target and literally begging you to shoot and kill him, complying with that request is indeed one way to stop him. Not exactly what I’d want from those sworn to “protect and serve” though.

      • William August 20th, 2014 at 8:41 am

Police say they heard the suspect shout, “Shoot me now. Kill me now.” The suspect, agitated and holding the knife “up high,” approached and was shot by both police officers after getting within three to four feet of their police car. Dotson said the officers were within “lethal range for a knife.”

Again, I wasn’t there and I cannot form an opinion without all the facts, but so far it seem to me that this was simply not a case of……..

“suspect is openly presenting himself as a target and literally begging you to shoot and kill him”.

        • Rusty Shackleford August 20th, 2014 at 9:11 am

That sounds an awful lot like not only is he begging you to kill him, but he’s trying to provoke you into doing so as well. Good work, cops, fulfilling this man’s suicidal wish. Great job.

          • William August 20th, 2014 at 9:14 am

            How would you have responded?

          • Rusty Shackleford August 20th, 2014 at 9:33 am

Keep distance, first priority: communication. Try to defuse the situation, calm him down. If absolutely necessary, try for an incapacitating shot, or use one of the many non-lethal toys our militarized police is equipped with, from tazers to pepper spray.

Or I guess I could just shoot and kill him, since it’s easier, and the safety of police officers takes priority over the safety of the citizens they’re supposed to be protecting and serving, right?

          • William August 20th, 2014 at 10:45 am

All good ideas, and I’ve used them all except incapacitating shots and tazers. You should know that pepper spray takes longer to become effective, than it takes someone 4 feet away with a knife raised to stab you. A knife is lethal force, pepper spray and tazers are not (I’m not sure these officers had tazers). Police doctrine generally indicates use of force in kind. Example when you encounter non deadly force you respond with non deadly force. When you encounter deadly force you respond in kind. Again I think it’s wrong to Monday morning quarter back this event, but I am reasonably sure that if someone is four feet from me with a raised knife and advancing, “talking him down” seems like an unrealistic response. I’m not sure if you have ever tried to back away from a knife wielding person advancing on you, but get some props and try it sometime. Let me know how it works out.

          • Rusty Shackleford August 20th, 2014 at 5:40 pm

Assuming of course that this is in fact deadly force, which it might not even be, as some witnesses have said it was a BUTTERKNIFE.
