Miami-Dade police took the shooter into custody before noon Tuesday, but did not release a name or give a motive for the killing, which took place at the southbound ramp from Northwest 95th Street to I-95.

“He got out of the car, approached him and shot at him several times,” said Detective Alvaro Zabaleta, a Miami-Dade police spokesman.

Police did not say how many times the panhandler was shot, though four bullet casings were marked off on the road surrounding the man’s wheelchair. They said the shooter was 27 years old, the dead man, 58.

Tuesday morning, the body remained in the wheelchair, slumped at the waist, his white T-shirt in view whenever a gust of wind rippled the yellow tarp covering his body.[su_sky_ad]

Zimmerman was said to be unavailable mumbling ‘he was panhandling on my ground…’

    • whatthe46 August 27th, 2014 at 2:10 am

you’re good. i bet he was unarmed.

    • granpa.usthai August 27th, 2014 at 4:19 am

definitely not the sorry sack of gz’s mo, Obie, even if the wheelchair was on a concrete sidewalk. He’s strictly into stalking/hunting down and killing unarmed children.

Very strange, yet I would not be surprised to learn there’s more to this story. Some history between these two men…

Thanks for the update. The video of the chase is outrageous. We now know the gun was stolen and the alleged shooter, Rodney Louis is black. We still don’t know the victim’s name or race.

        • granpa.usthai August 27th, 2014 at 4:16 am

won’t know the race of the shooter until his FLDL is verified – oops, that’d be an infringement of his civil liberties wouldn’t it?

          • R.J. Carter August 27th, 2014 at 10:26 am

Well, the shooter appeared on video, so that was fairly easy to verify.

        • MarcoZandrini August 27th, 2014 at 9:17 am

Oh oh! A b…….kman with a gun. But, but, but the NRA sez……..!

        • R.J. Carter August 27th, 2014 at 10:10 am

This story will grab the nation by the neck and the media won’t let go of it until… ooh! Shiny object!

  4. whatthe46 August 27th, 2014 at 2:14 am

people with issues own guns. seriously.

  5. Jake August 27th, 2014 at 7:06 am

But the shooter stood his ground – isn’t that the case Jeb Bush?

  6. James August 27th, 2014 at 10:40 am

PAN HANDLER IN WHEEL CHAIR SLOWING TRAFFIC ? JUST SHOOT HIM

  7. Red Eye Robot August 27th, 2014 at 10:41 am

A man stops his car gets out and uses a stolen gun to execute an unarmed man in a wheelchair and people try to cast blame on Florida’s stand your ground law.

    • whatthe46 August 27th, 2014 at 10:59 am

how do you know the gun is a stolen gun? and what makes you think that the dead guy would have been aware that the guy was going to shoot him until it was too late? and what makes you think that the dead (whose likely homeless) would have the money to purchase a gun? make sense will ya.

      • granpa.usthai August 27th, 2014 at 11:43 am

stolen guns don’t matter as we found out in Nevada, as long as YOU have the gun, YOU make the law. More than likely the guy in the wheel chair was high on drugs – or had just robbed a convenience store or paid for ‘stolen cigars’ before bully wheeling past the clerk. Being that the observant driver noticing a ‘weird behavior’ he chased the guy down, a loud confrontation ensued where the guy in the wheel chair sneaked around the back of the defender and attempted to rip out a section of concrete to use as a deadly weapon. Clear cut case of Florida stand your ground self defense as there’s been since the Zimmerman Trial. Might ought to check the guy in the morgue for drug use.

        • atunionbob August 28th, 2014 at 9:41 am

Sounds like YOU were there! Were you the shooter?

          • Sean Jones August 28th, 2014 at 5:38 pm

            Your sarcasm detector is brokes

      • Red Eye Robot August 27th, 2014 at 12:48 pm

How do I know the gun was stolen? Because unlike you I chose not to be ignorant and I spent a few minutes doing some research http://www.local10.com/news/suspect-who-fatally-shot-man-in-wheelchair-idd/27748098.

        However, Jake stated earlier:
“But the shooter stood his ground – isn’t that the case Jeb Bush?”

As if there is some sort of moral equivalency between someone using a gun to defend their life. and a cold blooded assassin shooting a man in a wheelchair

How you extrapolated that I in some way suggested Israel Zerquera, (the man in the wheelchair), would still be alive if he were armed is beyond me.

  8. Abby Normal August 27th, 2014 at 11:15 am

It takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a wheel chair. Perhaps a Ferguson police officer on vacation in Florida?

  9. Denise August 27th, 2014 at 11:55 am

This is tragic. Stand your ground won’t work here. Bad guy with a gun is brave when shooting a panhandler in wheelchair but brave man with a gun that murdered unarmed, defenseless panhandler will become a coward in court.

  10. Duncan Green August 27th, 2014 at 2:00 pm

i thought Michael Brown was dEAD. now hes going after panhandlers..so sad

    • Gary-D August 27th, 2014 at 8:09 pm

  11. LEK56 August 27th, 2014 at 7:53 pm

Going to prison at 27… Unimaginable. A man dead for no reason: 2014 America.

    • anthonyadams August 28th, 2014 at 3:43 am

Should be charged with 1st degree premeditated murder. Make him sit in solitary for the rest of his life.

      • atunionbob August 28th, 2014 at 9:39 am

Fry him would be better, then we dont have to pay for him the rest of OUR lives.

  12. John_St_John August 28th, 2014 at 12:15 am

DAMMIT WHY???? This makes me want to cry, scream, kick and break things. Mainly the neck of the vile butcher who killed that poor man. GAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

    • Marlene Ross August 28th, 2014 at 7:31 am

Better yet, go after the NRA leaders who pad their own pockets via their pushing of gun sales and pay off politicans so that there are limitations on gun control. They contribute to the vast numbers of deaths caused by guns each year in the U.S. Guns that get into the hands of those who are irresponsible, socio-paths, or otherwise think they have the right to take the law into their own hands.

  13. Shane Gibson August 28th, 2014 at 1:44 am

we must track down the gun before it kills again!

  14. atunionbob August 28th, 2014 at 9:38 am

I bet the dead guy was a Vet too. This is why we need to get Bernie Sanders bills to protect the poor and disabled passed in Congress. Get rid of the Obstructionist Republicans and tea party nuts and replace them with independents and Democrats.

  15. soupgoblin August 29th, 2014 at 3:31 am

Dang… I wonder which precinct the “assailant” works for…
