[su_center_ad]I hope the irony wasn’t lost among the Duck Dynasty crowd when Phil Robertson gave his view of what we should do about ISIS.

Robertson made the remarks during an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity on Tuesday evening as the two discussed ISIS’s brutal tactics, which includes delivering ultimatums to communities to convert to Islam or be killed.

“In this case, you either have to convert them, which I think would be next to impossible,” Robertson explained to Hannity. “I’m just saying convert them or kill them — one or the other.”

The reality TV star, a self-proclaimed evangelical Christian, said he would rather participate in a Bible study with ISIS members and “show them the errors of their ways.” However, Robertson added he would have no problem killing the militants if he was engaged in a gunfight with them.

How many did Jesus kill?

105 responses to Phil Robertson Echoes ISIS: ‘Convert Them Or Kill them’

  1. crc3 September 3rd, 2014 at 9:19 am

““I’m just saying convert them or kill them — one or the other.”

LOL…Robertson and his bright ideas should go over there and try to convert them and kill them if they don’t. Good luck with that because they’ll send his head back to the U.S. in a box….

    • Budda September 3rd, 2014 at 9:36 am

      Or on a stick

    • Chinese Democracy September 3rd, 2014 at 5:23 pm

Robertson looks like them… talks like them.. Hey if it quacks like a duck

  2. R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 9:21 am

Two alternative plans to stop them from killing.

Alan, are you against a plan to have ISIS come to a realization that killing people is wrong and they should follow a separate path, a plan that would negate the need for us to go in and take them out?

    • Anomaly 100 September 3rd, 2014 at 9:31 am

Robertson does sound exactly like ISIS. I’m all for a SEAL team or two, or perhaps a drone or ten.

      • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 9:39 am

But the context just isn’t there. He’s talking about two ways to deal with a group that has proven they want to continue murdering Americans, not “the world at large who remain infidels.”

        • Chinese Democracy September 3rd, 2014 at 1:33 pm

so anyway.. he sounds exactly like ISIS

“Although many Christians — including Pope Francis — struggle with how to respond to ISIS, there is an especially dark irony to Robertson’s comments: he claims it as a Christian position, but the dualistic “convert or kill” ideology is also known to be the horrific calling card of ISIS.”

          • mea_mark September 3rd, 2014 at 3:45 pm

I would be happy if they would just renounce. They don’t have to convert to anything. Just don’t be associated with a religious dogma that want’s to kill everybody that disagrees.

          • Dez September 4th, 2014 at 1:40 pm

Or like christians and every other moderates of other religious faiths, they can renounce the violent parts.

      • fahvel September 3rd, 2014 at 1:29 pm

will you write condolence letters to the mama and papa seals?

        • Anomaly 100 September 3rd, 2014 at 2:34 pm

It’s better than writing hundreds of thousands of them if we put more boots on the ground.

    • fahvel September 3rd, 2014 at 1:29 pm

are you suggesting the usa goes in and takes out everyone who kills? If so, where does it stop or are you only cranky because an american sadly lost his head? Why do “we” need to take them out? (cool tv talk there)

      • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 2:33 pm

        That’s two Americans now.

I guess we’ve a precedent at not doing anything until it’s more than four.

        • Bunya September 3rd, 2014 at 4:12 pm

Well??? What are you waiting for?!? Grab yer gun, fly to Iraq and KILL those SOB’s, and take Pat Robertson and this Duck Dynasty guy with you. The fine, upstanding Christians out there need a hero, and you’re lookin’ pretty good right about now!

          • Chinese Democracy September 3rd, 2014 at 5:24 pm

the fact that the U.S has been bringing in food and ammo to the Kurds and bombing ISIS on a daily basis must have slipped his mind.

  3. labman57 September 3rd, 2014 at 9:37 am

The collective insight of the commentators on FOX News is less profound than that of a well-known comic strip:
“We have met the enemy and he is us!”

    • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 9:39 am

      I Go Pogo.

      • Dcbos September 3rd, 2014 at 9:55 am

is this jeopardy ? Who is Pogo

        • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 9:56 am

        • Larry Schmitt September 3rd, 2014 at 10:23 am

You have to be a certain age to know Pogo. And Alley Oop. And Gasoline Alley.

          • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 10:24 am

            And Little Nemo.

          • Larry Schmitt September 3rd, 2014 at 10:28 am

            I’m not quite that old.

          • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 10:30 am

Then I won’t pull out any Yellow Kid references. 🙂

          • Larry Schmitt September 3rd, 2014 at 10:58 am

I’ve heard of him, but I had to look up Little Nemo. The others I used to read every morning.

          • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 11:05 am

I loved how Gasoline Alley ran in “real time.” Ah, the days when “Funky Winkerbean” was funny. 🙂

          • Larry Schmitt September 3rd, 2014 at 12:04 pm

Skeezix actually grew up and got married, and had kids of his own. That will never happen to Bart Simpson.

          • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 12:46 pm

Only other time I’ve seen it happen is “For Better or For Worse.” (Funky did it too, but in “jumps.”)

          • Larry Schmitt September 3rd, 2014 at 12:07 pm

Here’s a bunch of names you hadn’t thought about in years. I remember every one of these strips. From Wikipedia:

The strip is still published in newspapers in the 21st century. Walt Wallet is now well over a century old (114, as of January 5, 2014[5]), while Skeezix has become a nonagenarian. Walt’s wife Phyllis, age an estimated 105, died in the April 26, 2004 strip, leaving Walt a widower after nearly eight decades of marriage. Walt Wallet appeared as a guest at Blondie and Dagwood’s anniversary party, and on Gasoline Alley’s 90th anniversary Blondie, Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, and Snuffy Smith each acknowledged the Gasoline Alley anniversary in their dialogue. Snuffy Smith presented a character crossover with Walt in the doorway of Snuffy’s house where he was being welcomed and invited in by Snuffy.[6] In May 2013 at the Cartoon retirement home Walt is at a dinner when Maggie’s (of Bringing Up Father) pearl broach is stolen; Fearless Fosdick is his usual incompetent self trying to catch the thief; cameos include “retired” cartoons such as Lil’ Abner; Smokey Stover; Pogo and Albert. There is even the appearance of an active cartoon character, Rex Morgan M.D.

Reports are stating that the strip will be coming to an end when Jim Scancarelli retires in 2015.

          • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 12:45 pm

Oh man, Fearless Fosdick. I haven’t thought of that Dick Tracy riff in years! 🙂

          • Jim Valley September 3rd, 2014 at 1:27 pm

            And Jimmy Hatlo.

Oh good, someone tell Obama we have a ”strategy” now. Just drop the duck guy into Syria with a Bible and a gun. That’s one beheading I’ll look forward to.

    • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 11:08 am

A little disappointed that we featured a comment looking forward to a beheading.

      • Tom Ward September 3rd, 2014 at 1:25 pm

        Indeed

      • fahvel September 3rd, 2014 at 1:26 pm

disappointed maybe but the comment received 11 (so far) up ticks.

        • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 2:31 pm

That doesn’t assuage the disappointment. It just increases it.

      • Anomaly 100 September 3rd, 2014 at 2:35 pm

You are a mod here, you silly goose. You have the capability un-feature a comment:-)

    • Red Mann September 4th, 2014 at 2:34 am

      Tacky.

  5. Dcbos September 3rd, 2014 at 9:57 am

Is that what jesus told his apostles? “convert them or kill them”.

    • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 10:00 am

His feelings are kinder than mine. He’s giving them an option to stop killing.

      • Dez September 4th, 2014 at 1:42 pm

Why is okay for Christians to say “convert or die”, but not for Muslims?

        • R.J. Carter September 4th, 2014 at 3:47 pm

It’s not. And that’s not what’s happening here. He’s offering a path to redemption — the one he knows — in lieu of having to die. He’s not aiming the statement at an entire nation, either.

          • Dez September 4th, 2014 at 4:13 pm

Yeah that’s the excuse religious fundamentalists use like ISIS. You can try to spin it to seem good, but it’s not. “Convert or die” is never acceptable strategy to get people into your faith.

          • R.J. Carter September 4th, 2014 at 5:01 pm

Which is why I said his approach was far more kinder than mine, which is “Just die.”

          • Dez September 4th, 2014 at 5:35 pm

Or fundamentalists from any religion should be opposed.

          • R.J. Carter September 4th, 2014 at 5:57 pm

            No, I didn’t say that.

          • Dez September 4th, 2014 at 6:24 pm

No that is what I am saying. Religious fundamentalism should always be fought. “Convert or die” is never acceptable no matter what religion says it.

  6. Stan Ubeki September 3rd, 2014 at 10:05 am

More proof that the right wing vocabulary does not include “irony”

    • Tom Ward September 3rd, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Also more proof that all religious extremists think poorly.

  7. Shades September 3rd, 2014 at 10:05 am

Imagine this guy not having a tv show and, therefore, not considered a conservative hero. Then imagine the crowd’s reaction as he approached a Koch sponsored conservative fundraiser

    • tiredoftea September 3rd, 2014 at 12:17 pm

Imagine that Hannity truly believes that what he does is “news”.

  8. NW10 September 3rd, 2014 at 10:14 am

List of right wing has been celebrities that comment on politics:

    Donald Trump
    Elizabeth Hasselbeck
    Phil Robertson

    Danny Bonaduce
    Pat Boone
    David Mustaine
    Fred Thompson

  9. mea_mark September 3rd, 2014 at 10:15 am

Drop Duck Dynasty Bible pamphlets on them explaining the error of their ways and if that doesn’t convert them, just kill them?

  10. ddconn September 3rd, 2014 at 10:18 am

He’s not qualified to speak on this. In fact, he’s nuts.

    • NW10 September 3rd, 2014 at 10:29 am

Not nuts, but an actor. He’s actually well educated and has to pretend he’s a racist hillbilly to get the racists who watch Fox News all excited.

    • teloiv September 3rd, 2014 at 6:43 pm

Those are the qualities that make Robertson the perfect fox news guest.

  11. Dave September 3rd, 2014 at 10:19 am

“Now, the reason I said that Robert Bergdahl looked like a Muslim is
that he looks like a Muslim,” O’Reilly began on Wednesday night”……Annnnnnnnd I’m sure he feels the same way about Phil…right?

  12. Jack Tafoya September 3rd, 2014 at 10:25 am

He IS the “domestic terrorist” I always THOUGHT he looked like! I knew it!! You know us REAL Americans, we can always spot a phony just by his wierd unconventional looks. But with Phil mostly by the stupid shit he says everytime he opens his mouth. He just doesn’t get it!! Toooo stupid!!

    • R.J. Carter September 3rd, 2014 at 10:30 am

Yep, most of us just want to go in and kill ’em. This guy is showing a hint of mercy to Muslim extremists. That’s definitely anti-American.

      • Bunya September 3rd, 2014 at 3:57 pm

Yeah. Better we first force them to convert, then kill ’em (in Jesus’ name, of course). That’s what a real ‘murican chrischun would do.

        • Dwendt44 September 4th, 2014 at 1:20 am

Ann Coulter said much the same thing a few years ago.

  14. tiredoftea September 3rd, 2014 at 12:39 pm

Another pretend christian using the bible to prove that killing or converting adversaries is what its all about!

    • Stan Black September 3rd, 2014 at 1:23 pm

The problem is; this is a real Christian. All of Abraham’s troubled children have the keys to the world and are driving the rest of us off the cliff… unfortunately.

      • tiredoftea September 3rd, 2014 at 1:33 pm

I guess I have a bit more hope than that this clown represents Christianity. It seems that MLK, Rev. Barber in N.C. and many others have a truer “Christian” world view of compassion, love and brotherhood.

      • KarenJ September 3rd, 2014 at 2:09 pm

I agree with tiredoftea; it’s more accurate to refer to people like Phil Robertson — or most others self-declared — as “Christians”, not Christians.

    • Judgeforyourself37 September 3rd, 2014 at 9:00 pm

The Bible OK’d slavery, too, do you want to bet that Robertson supports slavery, too, “cuz, da Bible sez it is jest fine and dandy.”

      • tiredoftea September 3rd, 2014 at 9:14 pm

Since Phil never saw an unhappy black person while growing up in Jim Crow 60’s south, it’s not a stretch to make that assumption.

  16. Chinese Democracy September 3rd, 2014 at 1:27 pm

gosh why do so many people find him as controversial? … WHAT a stupid question

  17. KarenJ September 3rd, 2014 at 2:06 pm

You’re such an optimist, Alan. I’m sure the irony WAS lost on the Duck Dynasty when Phil Robertson expounded on what we should do about ISIS.

I doubt the DD crowd have reflected very much, either, on Phil Robertson’s physical resemblance to Osama Bin Laden (even to the habit of wearing camouflage) or any other radical Muslim, or Robertson’s views on women, particularly young nubile women.

  18. not_buying_it September 3rd, 2014 at 2:24 pm

U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman issued a ruling Wednesday (Sept. 3) upholding Louisiana’s ban on gay marriage, breaking a string of 20-plus court victories for supporters of same-sex marriage since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act last year. http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2014/09/louisiana_gay_marriage_ban_uph.html

Hard to get outraged at something they have always done and always will.
They take their ‘bible’ literally where as the owners back in the day realized the Old Testament may send the wrong message to the tribe so they revised it to a some what less violent book……
