Django Unchained star Daniele Watts and her husband who is white say that Studio City Police mistook the couple for a prostitute and her “trick” and arrested her. The couple shared pictures and a video of the incident on Facebook.

Watts was handcuffed after refusing to show ID, which she says she was within her rights to not do, based on the law, according to The YBF.

Watts

“Today I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place,” Watts’ Facebook post reads.

“When the officer arrived, I was standing on the sidewalk by a tree. I was talking to my father on my cell phone. I knew that I had done nothing wrong, that I wasn’t harming anyone, so I walked away.”

Watts-husband

She continued to say, “A few minutes later, I was still talking to my dad when 2 different police officers accosted me and forced me into handcuffs.”

Watts’ husband, Brian James Lucas, wrote on Facebook, “So they handcuffed her and threw her roughly into the back of the cop car until they could figure out who she was. In the process of handcuffing her, they cut her wrist, which was truly NOT COOL!!!”

“Our freedom isn’t freedom folks, when people can abuse others with no reason or evidence at all just because they “think” they have been given the power by people that are ONLY equal to us. Of course, they had to let her go eventually cuz we weren’t a threat to anyone. They weren’t expecting D to be so intelligent and outspoken, and left truly feeling the fear vibration finding out that they had just fucked with 2 celebrities,” he wrote.

I’m sure glad we live in a post racist society.

    • tiredoftea September 14th, 2014 at 4:56 pm

Yes, SCOTUS sure nailed that one!

  2. edmeyer_able September 14th, 2014 at 10:36 am

I can only hope they go to the trouble to sue this department for their actions, otherwise no much will change.

  3. labman57 September 14th, 2014 at 10:49 am

Police Dept response: “Since we f*cked up, we have no record of the incident. SOP to protect our cowardly asses.”

  4. Skydog2 September 14th, 2014 at 10:52 am

“Daniele was handcuffed after refusing to show ID” – show ID and it would have been over in 2 seconds

    • edmeyer_able September 14th, 2014 at 10:58 am

Submitting to their unlawful demands will only re-enforce their actions, kinda like responding to asinine comments.

      • mea_mark September 14th, 2014 at 11:09 am

        mea culpa in advance?

Being with her husband is worthy of police scrutiny?

      • M D Reese September 14th, 2014 at 12:36 pm

Well, he’s white, and she’s black, so the profile says….
Seriously–this is shit. I’m glad that no one got shot.

        • Anomaly 100 September 14th, 2014 at 12:57 pm

If he was black and she was white, the police might have pulled their weapons on them.

          • M D Reese September 14th, 2014 at 1:54 pm

…and seriously may have shot him. Life is cheap in Cop Land.

    • fahvel September 14th, 2014 at 1:29 pm

because they wear blue suits, one is supposed to kiss their culs? Horsecrap – there is no law saying one must id themselves to anyone.

    • Larry Schmitt September 14th, 2014 at 2:08 pm

What legitimate reason did they have to ask her for ID? Their is no law in this country, or any state or county or municipality, that requires any person to carry ID, or that allows cops to ask for ID without cause. This is the same logic that tells people with regards to surveillance, “If you haven’t done anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.” Wise up.

    • wanderingi September 14th, 2014 at 2:37 pm

      “Dong,” dog.
One more step toward the abyss of being free to do anything you are told to do.

    • William September 14th, 2014 at 4:23 pm

There is absolutely no legal requirement to show any police officer any ID when you are standing on the street and not suspect in any crime or violation. In fact she can legally walk away and refuse to talk to the Police. I can assure you that when A.I.D, and the civil lawsuit folks are done with these guys, they will be patrolling the park enforcing dogshit ordinances IF they are lucky to even keep their jobs.

    • tiredoftea September 14th, 2014 at 4:54 pm

Correct, from a process point of view, but where was the “probable cause” for their actions?

      • whatthe46 September 14th, 2014 at 5:32 pm

what probable cause? since when is talking on the phone and cuddling with a white man if you’re a black female grounds for arrest in this country?

        • tiredoftea September 14th, 2014 at 5:56 pm

          Apparently, for some time.

          • whatthe46 September 14th, 2014 at 6:01 pm

            ya got me there.

      • mea_mark September 14th, 2014 at 5:37 pm

That will be in the incident report, right. Oh wait, I don’t think there is one. They let her go without charging her for anything and they are going to pretend it never happened. Who needs probable cause when you don’t have to justify your actions.

        • tiredoftea September 14th, 2014 at 5:55 pm

Which is likely why she didn’t cooperate. They had none and offered no explanation to her.

      • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 12:17 am

Once the police arrive and are trying to determine if a crime took place, you can’t just walk away.

        • mea_mark September 15th, 2014 at 10:06 am

          Yes you can.

      ZING!

      • M D Reese September 14th, 2014 at 5:49 pm

I’m sure I know the top two reasons…This will be an interesting story to follow on a lot of levels.

  7. R J September 14th, 2014 at 1:02 pm

Had she been white and her husband black, they would have charged him with rape, and shot and killed him on the spot, faux news would have then made the cops a hero for saving the life of a good white christian woman, and Bill will have gone on and on about the lack of morals within the black community. Seeing as how the police are wrong here, faux news will not even cover this story.

    • Larry Schmitt September 14th, 2014 at 2:16 pm

Just for the hell of it, I searched the FN site, and found nothing about this story. Which surprises exactly no one.

      • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 2:40 pm

funny that, since this all happened in the land of enlightenment! How about blaming this on the prejudices of the officers or the policies of that police dept, instead of blaming a cable channel, unless of course you can prove that Sheperd Smith, Hannity or O’reily were posing as one of the officers?

        • Larry Schmitt September 14th, 2014 at 2:41 pm

Did I say I blamed fox?

          • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 2:59 pm

You all mentioned Fox, you all hate that network so rabidly, you all will use any story to tarnish them.. I have seen plenty of stories that went unmentioned by other networks.. Either way this story is atrocious, but lets not blame the left, the right or FOX, lets blame the Police Dept or the officers!

          • mea_mark September 14th, 2014 at 3:08 pm

One comment and a reply means “You all”? Stereotyping are we? That is what racist do. Are you a racist?

          • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 3:22 pm

I am not a racist, unless painting “you leftos” with one stroke is considered racist? Are Liberals/Leftos a race now?? Go ahead and call me a racist, I realize its something “you all” do to make yourselves feel better!

          • maritzka September 14th, 2014 at 3:48 pm

Why so sensative and Butt-Hurt? Just like squalling Sean Hannity, or arrogant Bill O’Reilly, you dish it out daily and cry like a little “B” when it is pointed back in your direction. Which small and insignicant crybaby are you? Fox sucks! Now go cry to mommy.

          • Larry Schmitt September 14th, 2014 at 3:13 pm

They tarnish their own reputation (“fair and balanced”) every time they “report” a story. I repeat, I did not blame fox. And to be fair, I did a google news search, and it wasn’t on cnn or msnbc either, but it was on plenty of other news sites: Washington Post, Guardian, Slate, NY Daily News, and others.

          • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 3:26 pm

You should have been fair and balanced then.. LOL But don’t you see a pattern here, FOX got brought into this story when it doesn’t relate?? Its like tourettes with you guys… Now if this incident happened in lets say Atlanta, you all would be blaming this on the Baptists.

          • Larry Schmitt September 14th, 2014 at 3:34 pm

You keep saying someone is blaming fox. That hasn’t happened. Only people being blamed on this thread are the cops. Everything else is just a side issue, and you’re trying to push it to the front.

          • mea_mark September 14th, 2014 at 4:05 pm

What is really funny is that you have made it more about Fox than anyone else has.

And how is responding to someone about Fox not fair and balanced when the reply deals with the original comment about Fox. The comment didn’t address other stations so there was no need to address those other stations to be fair and balanced.

          • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 6:32 pm

I was trying to figure out why the correlation was even made.. I rest my case, as the potty mouth haters came out of the wood work.. On Colmes facebook page, his partisans blame the recent solar flares on the right, so I guess anything is fair game for finger pointing these days.

          • mea_mark September 14th, 2014 at 7:06 pm

They never retract their b#llsh#t and just keep spewing crap almost 24/7.. The only time they do not is during commercials.

          • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 3:19 pm

That’s not my name, so who are you referring to boy?

          • Nicholas Russell Harris September 14th, 2014 at 10:11 pm

Leftos? Is this a technical term? No one hates any news station just because they don’t treat us like “royalty” we hate that they blatantly lie about many of their stories, and instead of basing it on fact they want to call “expert opinions” in. For example John McCain, or Sarah Palin, who usually don’t know a DAMN thing about that which they speak of, and then have the AUDACITY to call it “fact” or say it’s from a “reliable” source.

Oh by the way the Latin for Hypocrite is “Hypocrita” or in laymans terms. . .hypocrite.

          • William September 14th, 2014 at 4:11 pm

You tell ’em Russell. Lets not blame the content or quality of the fair and balanced people.

          • ellenry September 14th, 2014 at 5:21 pm

Most of the stories that are “Unmentioned” are made up. It has been proven by reliable sources that Fox lies around 50% of the time (more or less given the day.) they claim to be news but on paper are an “entertainment” station. The work at spreading fear, hate and dividing us into two or more factions..It keeps us more managble..As we all get together, be might actually take back our government. The Saudi millionaire that owns Fox along with Rupert Murdock..admits that his goal is a weak America.

          • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 6:26 pm

So if it doesn’t flatter the left, its a lie…???? If they lie so much, why do you watch them, oh yes that’s right, messynbc and Can Never News lies too,, LOL… Mind blowing, for my entire life 51 years and counting, the news media has always been giving the leftos a rim job, you don’t like it when the show is on other foot?? Liberal is latin for hypocrite.

          • Larry Schmitt September 14th, 2014 at 7:00 pm

If you conducted a poll of the people who visit this site, I’d bet they don’t regularly watch any of the news networks. I don’t. They’re not even in my channel lineup.

          • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 7:17 pm

Why don’t you take a look at those here who went tourettes over Fox…

          • Larry Schmitt September 14th, 2014 at 7:51 pm

You don’t have to watch fox to know what they’re like. Media Matters keeps a close eye on them.

          • Ross Cassell September 14th, 2014 at 8:31 pm

Who watches the watchers?? Do you honestly believe MM has any objectivity?? If you do, then hire a fox to guard your hen house.. 🙂

      • Pundit456 September 15th, 2014 at 5:28 am

I do not know what you mean by “FN” but perhaps you should have tried the LAPD website .
        http://www.lapdonline.org/search_results/search/?q=Daniele%20Watts

        • Larry Schmitt September 15th, 2014 at 6:34 am

FN is fox news. Since it was mentioned in the post I was replying to, I didn’t think it was necessary to spell it out. And your link doesn’t give any details. What was the citizen reporting?

  8. whatthe46 September 14th, 2014 at 5:30 pm

did they ask the “john” for his information or handcuff him? dun dun dunnnn!

    • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 12:15 am

Did the “john” attempt to walk away from a possible crime scene without showing ID?

      • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 12:48 am

if they believed she was prostituting, he should have received the same treatment. notice, the police did not say, the “john” cooperated. there were 3 cops that approached her. handcuffed her quickly and put her in the car. not one mention of him right? right.

        • mea_mark September 15th, 2014 at 10:10 am

Heck, he got pictures of it.

      • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 1:45 am

and what is this fk’n “crime scene” you keep attempting to put out as “fact.” or “possible” crime scene. do you even re-read the sh’t you say before you so confidently hit post?

        • jasperjava September 15th, 2014 at 9:52 am

It’s a “possible crime scene” because wherever Black people go, they carry along with them a 10-foot radius of “possible crime scene”.

  9. Tommy6860 September 14th, 2014 at 5:36 pm

So this is how it works, right?

Black woman kissing a white man = prostitution.

Black man kissing a white woman = probable rape.

The citizens must have been really taking care of keeping their parking meters out of violation when this happened.

    • R.J. Carter September 15th, 2014 at 1:12 pm

It seems that the wholesome photo Watts provided isn’t exactly a photo of the scene that happened.

      • Anomaly 100 September 15th, 2014 at 1:24 pm

        According to one witness.

      • mea_mark September 15th, 2014 at 1:27 pm

You just now figured out that there are different outfits on her? I went with the picture of her handcuffed with the police officer to determine what she was wearing. You didn’t really think the police let her change after handcuffing her did you?

        • R.J. Carter September 15th, 2014 at 1:31 pm

No, I’m going with the story that describes “public display of affection” with “full on sex in the front seat with the passenger door open.”

  10. Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 12:14 am

When the police arrive on a potential crime scene, you can’t just walk away. They need to determine if an actual crime took place and will detain suspects until they’re satisfied no crime took place.

    • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 12:45 am

an 18 y/o white teen in aurora was walking around with his gun (open carry) people afraid called 911. police arrived on the scene and questioned him. they asked him his name. he refused. they asked him for i.d. (he refused). they left him alone.

      • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 8:54 am

If true, it would appear the police acted inappropriately.

        • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 2:19 pm

if true? google it. 18 y/o white teen in aurora, co. walking around with gun…

    • Rusty Shackleford September 15th, 2014 at 12:59 am

I love how you start your ramblings off with an objectively false premise (that this was a crime scene or that the police had any reason to suspect it was one) and then keep talking as if your if your initial premise wasn’t patently bullshit.

      • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 8:54 am

False premise, I never said “this was a crime scene”.

        • jasperjava September 15th, 2014 at 9:28 am

You said it was a “potential crime scene”. Anywhere where there is a Black person present is a “potential crime scene” to you and your fellow right-wing fascist authoritarians.

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 9:35 am

I’ve clarified it twice now, this will be the third and final time …. I never “this” or “it” was a crime scene. I was speaking in general and not about this specific case because I don’t have the detailed facts.

You also don’t have the facts but are quick to cry racism.

          • jasperjava September 15th, 2014 at 9:41 am

If you’re not talking about this specific case, then why did you post your ignorant fascist authoritarian bloviating crap at all on this thread.

No, you read this story, and you made it all about how this Black woman should have knelt before her white oppressors and did what she was told. She was uppity and didn’t know her place.

        • Rusty Shackleford September 15th, 2014 at 9:25 pm

So then your entire rambling was completely irrelevant and unneeded, since it only applied even remotely to potential crime scenes, which this was not one.

          Why bother posting then?

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 9:52 pm

I never said it was a crime scene but now that witnesses have stepped forward, it appears it was.

The police were called to the location because witnesses told cops they were watching her and her BF have full-on sex in the passenger seat WITH THE DOOR OPEN!

          • Rusty Shackleford September 15th, 2014 at 11:15 pm

I love how you’re attempting to retroactively justify your bias despite admitting that you had absolutely none of this information at the time of your inane posting.

    • Pundit456 September 15th, 2014 at 5:20 am

Mr Skydog2 it is usually advisable to read one’s comment, as if someone else had written it, before posting. Giving you the benefit of the doubt, I assume you did not proofread your post.
Otherwise, the implication of your post is that the police had reason to regard the area as a “potential crime scene” because there was a Black woman present although you do not cite the crime you think they had probable cause to believe had been committed.
Notwithstanding, you assert they were justified in first apprehending the woman, as a suspect, and then determining whether or not a crime had been committed.
If this was not your intent, please feel free to clarify for those of us who are unfamiliar with you and the idiosyncrasies of your dialect.

      • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 8:52 am

I don’t know the specifics of this case, nor do you, so I was speaking in general and not about this instance.

For example, when someone calls 911 and the police arrive, you can’t just walk away and refuse to show ID

        • Pundit456 September 15th, 2014 at 9:36 am

Thus far the police have offered no other reason for approaching Ms Watts. Known prostitutes must be witnessed soliciting before they can be arrested for solicitation; so draw your own conclusions.

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 9:41 am

When did you hear the police side of the story?

            Ms. Watts wasn’t arrested.

          • jasperjava September 15th, 2014 at 9:47 am

She was handcuffed! Do police handcuff people without putting them under arrest? That makes the situation even worse, from a legal point of view.

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 11:39 am

Yes, the police can handcuff people without putting them under arrest.

          • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 2:18 pm

            unlawful detention. wanna law suit?

          • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 2:17 pm

she wasn’t arrested because she didn’t do a damn thing wrong. what part of that don’t you understand? there’s no police report either and will not be one.

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 3:05 pm

Witnesses from the nearby Directors Guild office building told cops they were watching her and her BF have full-on sex in the passenger seat WITH THE DOOR OPEN. The eyewitnesses said the guy was sitting in the seat, she was straddling him and it was for everyone to see.”

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 2:10 pm

Reason for approaching Ms. Watts: witnesses called the police because they were having full-on sex in the car with the door open for all to see.

    • jasperjava September 15th, 2014 at 9:24 am

Skydog2, like most right-wing authoritarians, is a big fan of the police state. The whole world is a potential “crime scene”, and if you’re the wrong skin color you just have to accept that you can be arrested or shot for any reason, or no reason whatsoever.

      • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 9:28 am

Why is it anytime a black person is stopped by the police its because they’re black? People of all races commit crimes are rarely own up to it, our prisons are full of innocent people.

        • jasperjava September 15th, 2014 at 9:36 am

There’s a pretty blatant example of that in the post above, let alone in several other news stories.

But I guess it’s pretty difficult for ignorant racist bigots to figure that out.

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 9:39 am

I’m an “ignorant racist bigot” because I choose to wait for the facts and not run around with my hair on fire after hearing only one side of the story?

          • jasperjava September 15th, 2014 at 9:57 am

Obviously the testimony of the actual victim doesn’t count as “the facts”. Facts are not facts when they come from Black people. Facts are only facts when they come from melanin-deficient authority figures.

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 11:38 am

Again, you’ve only heard one side of the story. Does the police version of events not count?

          • R.J. Carter September 15th, 2014 at 1:36 pm

Race aside — no, the testimony of the actual “person arrested” doesn’t count as “the facts” until they’ve been corroborated.

        • fairmont66 September 15th, 2014 at 9:41 am

Why is it that certain white people such as yourself are quick to deny the exist of racism and racial profiling?

    • fairmont66 September 15th, 2014 at 9:40 am

what probable cause did those cops have other than their obvious racism that this woman was a hooker? We don’t expect cops to be perfect but we do expect cops not to be racist idiots!

    • mea_mark September 15th, 2014 at 10:11 am

They have to have a reason to detain you. You can just walk away.

      • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 11:34 am

OK, but you can’t just walk away because you disagree with their reason for detaining you.

        • mea_mark September 15th, 2014 at 11:51 am

If their reason is unlawful you sure can, and you can sue them and the department if they do unlawfully detain you.

          • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 12:02 pm

You certainly can sue the police for unlawfully detaining you.

    • Michelle LaValley September 15th, 2014 at 12:32 pm

If the couple kissing had been white do you think their behavior would have indicated a potential crime scene?

      • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 12:52 pm

A couple’s race should have no bearing on whether it’s a crime scene.

      • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 2:05 pm

Kissing? Turns out they were having full-on sex in the car with the door open for everyone to see.

        • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 2:16 pm

          lie.

          • R.J. Carter September 15th, 2014 at 2:17 pm

Not going to check the source, are you? Too invested already in the former version of the story?

Why in the world would police assume that a couple having sex in a parked car with the passenger door open would be a prostitute and her trick?

    — source TMZ

    • mea_mark September 15th, 2014 at 1:43 pm

That looks pretty damaging. I guess Watts isn’t so sweet innocent after all.

      • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 2:01 pm

She made a statement that she had just got out of a meeting when she was in the car with her husband and they were kissing, when she got out of the car to call her father. that’s when she was approached.

    • Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 2:04 pm

TMZ: “we’ve learned witnesses from the nearby Directors Guild office building told cops they were watching her and her BF have full-on sex in the passenger seat WITH THE DOOR OPEN! The eyewitnesses said the guy was sitting in the seat, she was straddling him and it was for everyone to see.

    • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 2:15 pm

really? and no arrest for indecent exposure? of either of them? yeah right.

      • R.J. Carter September 15th, 2014 at 2:18 pm

          stop.

      • mea_mark September 15th, 2014 at 2:39 pm

It could be the people that witnessed the event didn’t want to come forward. I don’t know for sure but it doesn’t look good. So disappointed at the moment. I hope Watts hasn’t been playing with people through the media.

        • whatthe46 September 15th, 2014 at 3:01 pm

“Upon further investigation it was determined that no crime had been committed.” UScelebrity reports. it would make sense that if this one person was interviewed by the police in their “investigation” that the indecency was unfounded. think about it for a moment. just left a meeting and sitting in front of the building, for all the world to see, having full on sex with the car door open? i don’t think so. a black woman and a white man, kissing in a car and profiled, likely by some white woman. i guess all successful black women with white men would not look like them as a couple.

In newly released audio from the incident, the trouble escalates when Watts refuses to provide identification to the officer. “We’re not doing anything. I’m on the phone with my dad, this is my boyfriend, this is a public place,” Watts is heard saying. “You know how many times the cops have been called just for being black? I’m just being really honest.”

“Who brought up the race card?” an officer replies. “I said nothing about you being black. I have every right to ask for your ID.”

“I have every right to say no, and if you’d like to demand it, you can take me down to the court office and I can make a scene about it,” an irate Watts replies. “And you know what? I have a publicist and I work as an actor at [CBS Studios]. If you’d like my ID you can say I am resisting arrest.” “There’s no resisting, you’re just interfering,” the officer says as the disagreement over her ID continues.

Later, an emotional Watts is heard shouting on the phone, “I can’t make out with my boyfriend in front of my f—— studio without the cops getting called!”

  13. Skydog2 September 15th, 2014 at 9:55 pm

The above article says the man with Ms. Watts is her husband. In the audio recording, she refers to the man as her boyfriend. Which is it?

  14. Skydog2 September 16th, 2014 at 2:43 pm

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Officer Michael Lewis said LAPD Sgt. Jim Parker, who had briefly handcuffed Watts, handled the situation with Watts the way he was supposed to have done. He said that Watts’s decision to be uncooperative is what resulted in her being detained, and that anyone who responded to an officer who was conducting an investigation in such a manner would be faced with the same result.

Watts and Lucas both matched the description of two people the 911 caller had alleged were engaging in sex in a car. The 911 caller had described a black female who was wearing floral shorts, a t-shirt, and sneakers; they also a white man wearing a black tank top.

According to Officer Lewis, if someone calls the police and complains of a public nuisance, such as a lewd act that is occurring in the public sphere, and authorities arrive on the scene to address and investigate that issue, they are required to furnish identification upon request.
