A shooting suspect in custody in San Bernardino after a nearly seven hour standoff which began when the suspect opened fire on children who were standing in line for ice cream.

The man reportedly struck the truck and another vehicle with gunfire and no injuries were reported, however, one young woman was taken to the hospital after suffering from a panic attack.

[su_center_ad]The suspect also fired on authorities during the standoff.

According to CBS Los Angeles, police said the man refused to talk to them and was “ranting.”

By 11:30 p.m., police fired tear gas into the home.

Residents in nearby homes were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

According to witnesses, the suspect was described as a middle aged man who often creates a nuisance in the neighborhood over garbage or mail boxes. Others described him as between 50 and 60-years-old.

Witnesses said there several kids were standing in line for ice cream when the shooting occurred.

According to one  9-year-old witness, the man screamed, “You [expletive], you better get inside.”

Who he was screaming at is not clear.

The man pointed the gun at the 9-year-old as he began running, according to the young witness.

Another young woman told the reporter with CBS that she saw the man in the middle of the street firing. The girl’s uncle got her down on the ground and said she and two other kids were covered in broken glass after a bullet shattered a car window.

The girl was so panicked she had to be taken to the hospital.

“This guy just came out his house and starting shooting us,” Adrian Negrete said, “Shooting at us, the ice cream truck.”

One 9-year-old said, “He just said he was going to start shooting kids. He started shooting at me and then he started shooting at other kids.”

Another member of the well regulated militia brings the “you kids get off my lawn” to another level.

      I…uh…really don’t know where to start…
is he wearing his wife’s shorts? is THAT his house?
this has to be a joke.

      • Larry Schmitt September 16th, 2014 at 2:20 pm

He got sent to the dog house by his wife, and the only clothes he could find on the line were his wife’s. But he had his guns and his smokes.

I guess that’s as believable as anything else.
boggles the mind. well. it boggles mine.

???? I’m sure there was plenty left for him. what a nut!

  3. Larry Schmitt September 16th, 2014 at 11:23 am

I wonder if a background check would have turned something up on him that would have prevented him from owning guns. Guess we’ll never know, will we?

this was in california–i thought california had reasonable gun safety laws…?

      • Larry Schmitt September 16th, 2014 at 12:02 pm

This is what would make someone ineligible for firearms purchase in California, directly from the state Dept of Justice:
Under what conditions is someone considered ineligible to possess and/or purchase firearms?

Any person who has been convicted of a felony, certain misdemeanors, certain firearms offenses, who is addicted to narcotics, who is the subject of a domestic violence restraining order, or has been committed to a mental institution pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code section 8100, may not possess or have under his or her control any firearm. Certain federal statutes impose lifetime and other more restrictive prohibitions on firearm possession. Additionally, certain statutory conditions exist that allow for the possession of firearms but preclude the acquisition or purchase of additional firearms, such as the subjects of certain restraining orders and those under state or federal indictment.
So maybe he’s been crazy, but not committed, or he bought it at a gun show, or brought it with him from another state.

You can have the finest laws on the planet, but thanks to the NRA they are easily gotten around. Thank you, NRA…

        • Skydog2 September 16th, 2014 at 12:39 pm

The NRA doesn’t pass laws, blame the politicians.

          • M D Reese September 16th, 2014 at 1:49 pm

Who do you think owns the politicians? I think ALEC writes the laws in all the red states. The politicians just vote as their masters direct them to.

          • Skydog2 September 16th, 2014 at 2:03 pm

You can’t vote the NRA / ALEC out of office, you can vote your politician out.

          • M D Reese September 16th, 2014 at 2:26 pm

I vote accordingly. Unfortunately a lot of our fellow citizens don’t. They believe the glossy, expensive right wing ads and so vote against their own self interests every time. The problem is the big money that those groups have and the unlimited amounts that they can now spend to distort our democracy. I vote every time–it’s like pissing in the wind, but I do it anyway.

          • jasperjava September 17th, 2014 at 2:57 am

Only to be replaced by another right-wing puppet in the pocket of the NRA and the Koch brothers. Red Staters never seem to learn. They are being fed a steady stream of racist propaganda to keep them voting for the White Republican Party, all while being betrayed by the Repubs who work against their economic and social interests.

People on the right are so evil while those on the left are as pure as snow.

    • M D Reese September 16th, 2014 at 12:07 pm

      Thanks to the NRA!

  4. Gindy51 September 16th, 2014 at 11:56 am

Lemme guess, the old fart is white and the kids are various colors of brown.

    • NoInfo ToShare September 16th, 2014 at 1:43 pm

      That’s exactly what I thought.

  5. M D Reese September 16th, 2014 at 12:07 pm

Thank you NRA, for making sure that no whack job ever needs to go through a background check to buy a deadly weapon. Thank you.

  6. tiredoftea September 16th, 2014 at 12:45 pm

A well armed neighborhood is a safe neighborhood. Except for children playing, neighbors, anyone within firing range and the occasional passerby, or mail and package delivery, etc., etc.

    • Larry Schmitt September 16th, 2014 at 3:16 pm

You don’t even have to be within sight of the shooter. Many people are hit by stray bullets while in their homes, including kids in their beds. That alone should be enough reason to reduce the number of guns.

  7. Skydog2 September 16th, 2014 at 12:50 pm

“This is not the first time San Bernardino police have dealt with this man”
He shouldn’t have been allowed to own a gun.

  8. juicyfruityyy September 16th, 2014 at 1:07 pm

Let’s see how much his bond/bail is going to be.

  9. Brenda Lott September 16th, 2014 at 1:46 pm

Shooter is obviously white or he’d be dead, I’m sure. Wait – does anyone know where John McCain is today??????

Another “good guy” with a gun, proving that an armed society is a polite society.
