Surveillance video has been released of an attack by a “sovereign citizen” on a Georgia courthouse in July that resulted in one officer wounded and the suspect shot to death.

48-year-old Dennis Ronald Marx, a self-described sovereign citizen, put on a gas mask, armored vest and laid down homemade spike strips along the streets leading to the courthouse.

[su_center_ad]Marx threw tear gas canisters and smoke grenades, and fired at police with an AR-15 rifle, before being fatally shot by an officer.

Marx had an explosive device strapped to his body and police found bombs that could be clipped to hostages, zip-ties, an additional vest, and two handguns in his SUV.

Police determined that he carefully planned ahead of time. Items in Marx’s house matched those found inside his vehicle. A search of his home produce additional explosives.

Marx had previously been arrested on multiple felony charges, including weapon possession. He had also filed a civil rights complaint against the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office in 2013, according to the report.

While politicians are worried whether ISIS is knocking on our border’s door, we have fully armed domestic terrorists already attacking us.

There is a tiny fringe of far right wing extremists who are willing and able to commit violence among us.

They are terrorists in every sense of the word. The ignorant bigots who define terrorist as someone with dark skin who reads the Koran need to stop lying to the American people. You can be sure that if the perpetrator of this crime had been a Muslim, talk radio and FOX would have provided 24×7 coverage of the latest “terror” attack.

As it is, this event is presented as a local news story about a good guy with a gun gone bad. No terrorists here.

Just for kicks, google the name of the perpetrator ‘Dennis Ronald Marx’. Notice how few hits you get on the various right wing blogs which present themselves as the only true guardians of our freedom against the terrorist hordes. . Just another small example demonstrating that when it comes to honest evaluation and debate of the terror threats facing this country, right wingers are the last people we should listen to.

There are extreme right wingers in every state and multiple cities. Because of our dysfunctional media. Enough attention isn’t being presented. They need to address the situation. They are becoming more visible and dangerous.

How do you know he’s a “right wing extremist”?

      • tiredoftea September 16th, 2014 at 12:55 pm

It’s pretty simple. At various times in our history, violent extremists arise on the fringe of the far Right and far Left. There is an ebb and flow to it. In the 70s, for example, we had the SLA and the Weather Underground on the far Left. Nowadays the trend is for these groups to come from the far Right.
Wait long enough and some violent far Left bunch of crazies will appear.

The thing to do is not avoid addressing the issue by distractions and semantic hair-splitting, but to recognize that violent kooks need to be damned, regardless of whether their ideology places them on the extreme Left or Right. When the commit violence or conspire to do so and are caught, they need to be dealt with sternly by the justice system.

The Left should not make excuses for the violent kooks on the extreme Left.
The Right should not make excuses for the violent kooks on the extreme Right.

            See?
            Told ya it was easy.

I tend to agree with you in theory. But, always a But. The right wing media. Fox and am radio are driving these people mad. I don’t recall a bunch of armed lefties during the Bush years. This anti-black president, gun paranoia, succeed from the union stuff is kinda new.

Sovereign citizens can be called many things. Left wing is NOT one of those things.

        next question?

On June 6, just after 10 a.m. Dennis Ronald Marx, a self-described —–sovereign citizen——, put on a gas mask, armored vest and laid down homemade spike strips along Veterans Memorial Boulevard and East Main Street.

        http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-03-30/anti-government-militia-groups-freeman/53873496/1

In the past three years, there has been growing concern over activities of so-called “sovereign citizens,” who like the Grays and many of their anti-government predecessors “claim to exist beyond the realm of government authority,” according to a January FBI bulletin to state and local law enforcement officials warning of the potential for violence.

The sovereign movement, estimated by the Southern Poverty Law Center to number 100,000 ardent followers and about 200,000 sympathizers across the country, is rooted in an ideology that rejects government authority at its most basic levels, from its power to tax to the enforcement of criminal laws, including common traffic regulations.

          Excellent points, all, arc99.
Timothy McVeigh, Terry Nichols and the other chap convicted in the Oklahoma City bombing adhered to the ‘sovereign citizen’ doctrine. For many of us, this was when we became aware of these kooks.
I think that Burgert guy in the Montana militia, who thought he was going to start a revolution, also went for this hooey.

Your last quote illustrates how McVeigh was caught. He was pulled over for driving a car with no license plate. The cop observed a pistol on the seat of the car and hauled him in.

It’s not the idea of sovereign citizens but the f’kt up loonies who who adopt the title and act out bad movie scenes. The idea itself is interesting – sadly there’s very few places left on this shrinking globe for an individual to be an individual beholding to no one – as long as they are not whackos.
