Memphis police say an off-duty officer’s firearm was stolen after he left it behind in the men’s room at the mall. The gun was gone before he realized he had left it behind.

[su_center_ad]According to WREG, Lester Hobbs was working at his second job at Dillard’s in Oak Court Mall on Monday night when he went to use the bathroom, then left his gun on the towel holder.

“That’s pretty bad,” Eric Gilliam said. “We’ve got enough guns on the street as is.”

Gilliam added he’s dumbfounded by this latest break in the case because it was originally thought the gun was taken from the officer’s car.

Gilliam calls it neglect of duty.

“When you are talking about a gun, yeah. There’s no other way to look at it,” he said.

A woman who identified herself as Carol said she goes to Oak Court Mall once a month with her grandkids.

“I’m worried about my grandchildren more than anything. I hope this officer is reprimanded in some fashion,” she said.

The security cameras in that part of the store weren’t working and there are no suspects at this time.

Gilliam said, “I believe it was a mistake; everyone makes mistakes.”

But this mistake might have tragic consequences.

And if this idiot’s stolen gun is used in a homicide, will he be charged with murder? Not a chance!

This makes the case for a SMART GUN all the more relevant, this idiot should be put on desk duty for the duration of his career at the very least.

Trouble is, in some police dept. there aren’t enough desks to go around.

Oops! Great training going on there, Memphis PD! The guy not only left it behind, he thought it was stolen from his car!!

:he thought it was stolen from his car!!:

That or he lie about it being stolen, cause he knew it would sound better!

Everyone makes mistakes??? Being responsible and following all the necessary precautions when handling a gun stops mistakes…but you have to be a responsible gun owner to begin with

I’ve lost count of the number of iPhones I’ve found at different companies, sitting on the toilet paper dispenser in the john.

All those crazy kids and their selfies!

        • R.J. Carter October 11th, 2014 at 8:46 pm

My point is that people put down important things in the crapper all the time and leave them behind. You think the gun stays in the holster while his belt is around his ankles?

Memphis news is one of the online alerts I subscribe to – they have an awful problem with gun violence, even worse than Kansas City and we are up there a bit. I was stunned by the amount of crime they see.

What, guns in Beale St. bars is a problem? I thought all those private six shooters were there to protect us.

      • Carla Akins October 10th, 2014 at 3:13 pm

I love Beale St, I even considered moving to Memphis – I love the city but honestly the crime (and poverty) was more than I thought I could deal with sanely.

        • tiredoftea October 10th, 2014 at 3:56 pm

You didn’t go to enough bars then. Strapped, or not.

  6. Mainah October 10th, 2014 at 9:10 pm

Doh! That’s not like leaving your cell phone behind! How does a cop forget his gun?

  7. StoneyCurtisll October 10th, 2014 at 9:48 pm

Not very bright forgetting his weapon in the crapper stall…
What if he suddenly had to confront an unarmed black teenager walking in the street..

  8. rg9rts October 11th, 2014 at 7:00 am

Did he remember to pull up his pants??

  9. Geral Bassham October 13th, 2014 at 9:23 pm
