The former major league baseball player was cleaning his gun at his Las Vegas home when the accident occurred.

Jose’s fiancée Leila Knight tells TMZ Sports … he was sitting at a table in their home cleaning the gun when it went off. She says he didn’t know it was loaded — and the shot ripped through the middle finger on his left hand.

Leila tells us 50-year-old Canseco is in surgery…as doctors desperately try to save what’s left of the finger. She says the bullet tore through the bottom part of the finger and doctors have already said he’ll never have full use of it again … even under the best of circumstances.[su_csky_ad]

Isn’t checking to see if it’s loaded one of the first safety steps before cleaning? At least he’s retired.

you should ALWAYS check and treat a gun as it is loaded until you physically have cleared it. Not once, but 3 times…

Good Advice for someone who has what you seem to have…Respect for a weapon at all times. I won’t get into it more but we both know that that quality is rare and getting rarer these days.

Unfortunately, you are very right. thankfully, I had a good teacher. My Grandfather installed into me respect for them.

good thing he wasn’t holding it between his knees. Empty guns ‘ll do it every time when they have a bullet inside.

    AHHH HAAA! dumb ass.

  4. Bob Nelson October 29th, 2014 at 12:32 am

What you mean NOW they want you to unload the gun before cleaning it? But then you would have a clean gun with dirty bullets in it, is that really hygenic?

    • whatthe46 October 29th, 2014 at 12:39 am

      can’t cure stupid.

    • M D Reese October 29th, 2014 at 12:51 am

You don’t have to “believe” in science to have it shoot you in the butt…

      • Bob Nelson October 29th, 2014 at 2:37 am

Well when i was in the Marines back in the ’60’s I knew a Sergeant who had “dried” a couple of Radios in the ships kitchen ovens…..Yup you can “fry” things in an oven it seems.

He was lucky he didn’t blow his life or his wife away. Anyone who handles guns knows the first thing is to confirm it’s empty, confirm it again, and then always treat every gun as if it’s loaded.

  5. M D Reese October 29th, 2014 at 12:51 am

How do you not know if a gun is loaded or not before you clean it…

    • rg9rts October 29th, 2014 at 4:22 am

Aim at the wall (outside wall) and pull the trigger… Check the chamber..

      • M D Reese October 29th, 2014 at 3:12 pm

That way it will be someone ELSE’s family that is in danger. Good plan!

    • Hirightnow October 29th, 2014 at 11:48 am

If you’re a responsible owner, you check EVERY TIME, AND TREAT IT LIKE IT’S LOADED ANYWAY!

      • M D Reese October 29th, 2014 at 3:11 pm

I treat TOY guns as if they were real and loaded until proven different.

He is the guy who had two baseballs hit his head while playing the outfield, so…you know? BTW, I think that pic is his twin brother Ozzie.

  7. Obewon October 29th, 2014 at 2:37 am

Canseco will only be able to flip people off with the remaining fingers on his right hand.

    • Anomaly 100 October 29th, 2014 at 6:00 am

Yes, I really do want to know.

So, this is all gone, amirite?

      • Carla Akins October 29th, 2014 at 7:42 am

Initially I didn’t think it was his finger he shot off. Of course after all that steroid use , he probably can’t find the other.

        • Anomaly 100 October 29th, 2014 at 7:50 am

He just aimed at the bigger target.

Why is this man (Jose Canseco) allowed to posses a firearm?…

On February 10, 1989, Canseco was arrested for reckless driving after
allegedly leading an officer on a 15-mile chase. He was found guilty and
    fined $500.

On April 11, 1989, Canseco was arrested in California for carrying a loaded semi-automatic pistol in his car. He was released on $2,500 bail and pled no contest.

On February 13, 1992, he was charged with aggravated battery for allegedly ramming his then-wife Esther’s BMW with his Porsche.
On March 19, 1992, Canseco pled not guilty to charges of aggravated
assault and later underwent counseling and fulfilled a community-service
    requirement.

Canseco was arrested in November 1997 for hitting his then-wife, Jessica. In January 1998, he pled no contest and was sentenced to one year probation and required to attend counseling.

In October 2001, Canseco and his brother, Ozzie, got into a fight with two California tourists at a Miami Beach
nightclub that left one man with a broken nose and another needing 20
stitches in his lip; both were charged with two counts of aggravated
battery. The brothers both pleaded guilty and received both probation
    and community service
