A substitute teacher in a Chicago suburb will no longer be employed at Jay Stream Middle School in Carol Stream after repeatedly calling students the N word and referring to them as slaves while speaking to a group of 8th graders.

According to NBC Chicago, four 13-year-old students say they were in a social studies class working on a project about the Cold War last Wednesday when a substitute teacher approached them and called them “African American.”

[su_center_ad]”All four of us that were sitting there got offended because none of us are from Africa. I’m Jamaican. So we said, ‘Can you please not call us that?” Mea Thompson, one of the students said. “She continued to call us that and said, ‘It’s the politically correct term.’ Then she said, ‘Well, back then you guys would be considered the N-word.”

“We were so shocked and we were like, ‘What? Excuse me?'” Thompson said. “She was like, ‘Well, back then that’s what African Americans were called.'”

Over the 80-minute class period, the students said she repeated the racial slur and also referred to them as slaves.

It go so bad that one student threw down her books and others began crying, according to the student.

“I just want people to know how much it affected us and I don’t want this to happen to anybody else,” student Zaria Daniel said.

The school district confirmed on Tuesday that the teacher had been interviewed and did corroborate the girls’ description of the incident.

A district spokesperson said the substitute teacher will not be asked back to the school, according to NBC.

Thompson’s mother, Shayna Thompson, said the punishment isn’t enough.

“After the shock and hurt, I’m angry,” she said. “It’s a new world, and the people of the past that still hang onto hatred and bigotry don’t belong in this world anymore.”

She said she is looking into whether the incident could be considered a hate crime.

Local Police said they are aware of the incident and are investigating the matter.

  3. John_St_John October 29th, 2014 at 8:26 pm

The non-teaching teacher should never grace a class room again save to be a lesson in abject stupidity and ignorance. She deserves every ounce of ridicule and condemnation she receives for this blatant racist attack. And yes that is all she did, attack, attack, attack.

  4. Pistol-Packing October 29th, 2014 at 8:26 pm

Personally, I am offended by the term African American… My heritage is German and Yugoslavian. Do I refer myself to be German-American? or Slavic American??

If we want to be politically correct, we need to just start referring to people as American and drop this whole African, Latino, Chinese, Japanese, yada yada yada !!!

I am unaware of any of Pistol-Packing’s comments on other sites but he is a long time reader/poster here.He has always been civil, although he may not share the majority opinion and he has never acted in such a manner that would keep him from being welcome here. You may have him confused with someone else.

I just have no way to verify that claim. And even if he were, he’s done nothing here to be banned. If he does he along with anyone that crosses that line will be gone – at least temporarily. All banned readers have an opportunity to appeal their banishment.

Can I call you Susie? In high school, I had a friend named Anasa. She was named for her Dad – Asa. Her maternal grandmother had trouble pronouncing it so she called her Susie. Never asked if it was okay, refused to learn her name, just called her Susie.

          • tracey marie October 29th, 2014 at 8:39 pm

    • burqa October 29th, 2014 at 10:44 pm

Good grief, man, let people call themselves whatever they want. It doesn’t determine what you want to call yourself. Just because you don’t choose to refer to yourself by your heritage it doesn’t mean everyone else has to follow your example. Where did you get the idea you set the pace foir the nation, anyways?

But since you’re so thenthitive about it, I guess we can count you out for St. Patrick’s Day, when everyone else will be Irish….

    • jasperjava October 30th, 2014 at 7:15 am

You’re “personally” offended by an innocuous term like “African-American”?

It must suck to be you.

      • Larry Schmitt October 30th, 2014 at 7:37 am

I’m with you. I don’t know how the way a person refers to himself could offend another person.

        Yeah it does…

  5. Derp October 29th, 2014 at 8:30 pm

Seems to be quite a bit missing from this article. As a liberal I was always taught to ask questions when something seems fishy and this smells fishy.

What was the context of the discussion when she referred to them as African-Americans and why were these girls so offended that she did?

So I did a little research and quite a bit was left out of this post. To begin with the discussion was about the Emancipation Proclamation Since the discussion was about African Americans the teacher apparently made a mistake in thinking these girls were African Americans which is as they corrected the teacher on – factually incorrect since none alive today came from Africa. The ones during the slave days were and that’s why they were called that. The teacher was also correct that the ‘N word’ is what they were called back then. They were also called slaves. None of that is incorrect.

Part of this story is just plain stupidity. The teacher was most certainly wrong but in the context being taught was not entirely in the wrong. It also sounds as if the students also over reacted after apparently being referred to as the wrong race of darker skinned people. But the outlandish thing is someone trying to sue saying it is a hate crime.

It’s times like these that make me wonder if conservatives AND liberals are both screwed in the head. The right does this crap all the time but I am noticing liberals doing the same thing more and more. Just minutes ago on another liberal page I saw people arguing in favor of religious discussions in schools…except it was Islam they were supporting…and as long as I’ve been a liberal I have always read that religion has no place in education unless it’s a religious school.

Seriously, stop acting like right wingers.

    • Pistol-Packing October 29th, 2014 at 8:33 pm

Thank you for one of the most rational things I have read all day…

      • Carla Akins October 29th, 2014 at 8:35 pm

Regardless, nothing that teacher did is acceptable in 2014. If her teaching skills are that lacking, she needs to look for another job.

        • Pistol-Packing October 29th, 2014 at 8:58 pm

Personally I find that we have gone to far sometimes in being politically correct.

That being said, I was not there to witness in what context or in what manner this language was used. So I really cant form a formal opinion.

          • Tommy6860 October 29th, 2014 at 9:07 pm

I really am sick of the PC meme being tossed around as if those like you, who does not experience marginalization and racism because you have comfort in your zone. So when a slur is played out in such as it was in this article, everyone coming down on what are clearly hurtful comments should be dismissed, not only on the value on how this affected those two girls, but everyone else, because it is PC. These girls should then dismiss their dismay and hurt because PC :(. That’s nearly as sick, IMO!

          • NW10 October 29th, 2014 at 9:13 pm

            Asswhole.

        • burqa October 29th, 2014 at 10:39 pm

Yes, something in the scullery field…..

      • jasperjava October 29th, 2014 at 10:36 pm

“Thank you for one of the most rational things I have read all day…”

Of course, like most conservatives, you believe that racism is perfectly rational.

    • Carla Akins October 29th, 2014 at 8:34 pm

I’m pretty sure if she wanted to use a group of students as an example for teaching purposes it doesn’t have to be those with darker skin. Whether the word was accurate for the time referenced is no excuse to use it in this context.

    • tracey marie October 29th, 2014 at 8:34 pm

IF you read the article you would know the girls are NOT from Africa, one is even Jamacan. The racist teacher proceeded to call the girls affrican american, the “n” word and slaves. stop lying and go back to stormfront

    • jasperjava October 29th, 2014 at 8:53 pm

“The ones during the slave days were [come from Africa] and that’s why they were called
      that.”

Sorry, but there’s ZERO evidence that Black slaves in the days of slavery were called “African-Americans”. I challenge you to find the term anywhere in contemporary literature. Besides, the Atlantic slave trade was abolished in 1833, so by the time of the abolition of slavery in the United States almost ALL slaves were American-born.

“The teacher was also correct that the ‘N word’ is what they were
called back then. They were also called slaves. None of that is
      incorrect.”

So that’s a reason to use these words in 2014 in reference to young Black kids? Do you think the teacher was trying to provide a history lesson, rather than just hurl racial slurs? What’s the matter with you?

You defend this kind of racist garbage and you call yourself a “liberal”? Do us all a favor and go back under the rock you crawled out of.

      • Pistol-Packing October 29th, 2014 at 8:59 pm

        Whooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaa !!!!!!! That is enlightening…

      • burqa October 29th, 2014 at 10:38 pm

        Yeah.
I remember a time around 1970 when the term “Afro-American” was in vogue for a little while, but kinda died out because it was too long. Seems to me “African American got widespread in the late 80s or early 1990s.
I have done a lot of genealogical research and have read wills of ancestors and others, as well as newspaper articles from colonial or antebellum times and the n-bomb wasn’t used to refer to slaves, either. It was pretty much used as a slang term, in conversation, near as I can tell.

    • burqa October 29th, 2014 at 10:30 pm

      Emancipation Proclamation?
That wasn’t during the Cold War….

Since those kids were not around during the Emancipation Proclamation days, they were not called that then. Even if they were, it was horridly wrong for the teacher to be so damned stupid as to think it was ok to dredge up a term recognized for many decades now as being deplorably vile and think he could refer to those kids that way.
Remember, the kids were referring to how THEY were being referred to, not people long ago. The teacher was calling THEM that, in 2014, when they objected to being referred to as African American.
You talked about context, and that was the context of the usage of the word.

  6. Carla Akins October 29th, 2014 at 8:31 pm

I fail to understand why they weren’t addressed by their names. They do have names, right?

  7. Tommy6860 October 29th, 2014 at 8:33 pm

I read this earlier on TRS. This gave me a serious bout of the sads. For two human beings to be treated and demeaned in such a way by a bigot who has already determined they are not deserving of any of their own identity, let alone respect, was seriously disheartening. :'( :'( :'(

      • Tommy6860 October 29th, 2014 at 8:40 pm

I did and it wasn’t wasn’t. This is 2014 and the context the teacher could have conveyed was lost with the racial overtones. Efficacy is a thing. Even then, these are two girls who belong to a minority group that still experiences marginalization.

        • Pistol-Packing October 29th, 2014 at 8:55 pm

hardly. Why do I know this? It’s because I’ve been upset at plenty of people and never have I used racial epithets against them and especially not when they are openly hurt and crying about it. It’s pretty much basic manners.

  8. Snick1946 October 29th, 2014 at 9:01 pm

There are some real morons out there substitute teaching. The bar is perhaps lower for them than for full time staff. My son was in second grade many years ago when a sub teaching his class tried to lead the kids in prayer to ‘Lord Jesus’. This was just after 9-11 and she scared them to death telling them that Jesus was coming very soon. There was so much flak from parents that the school had to send letters to the parents- it also made the news. She was immediately stripped of her certification. You have to wonder about the personality type who would do something like the teacher in this story..

  9. NW10 October 29th, 2014 at 9:13 pm

American is not a race is a nationality. Latin/Hispanic is not a race, is a nationality. Latin can be White, Black or Indian. Period.

It’s of paramount importance that you define who and what we are at all times. I thought we were bereft forever without your sage counsel. If you had started with “the girls are unaware as of yet, since they are in school, the heritage of their present nationality is Jamaican” Or “although educated, the girls are ignorant yet of the fact that the heritage of their present nationality is Jamaican …” – you just might have squeeked by saved your valid point from being an utterly crass statement.

  11. mcalleyboy October 30th, 2014 at 3:34 am

  12. Pie Guy October 30th, 2014 at 3:54 am

Part of the problem is that Black Africans keep changing what they want to be known as. Negro, Black, African-American, I can’t remember them all. Every generation seems to want a different name….well, if you were born here, that makes you an American. I’m American. My ancestry, however, is German, Irish, English, Scotch, and Dutch. I don’t identify with any of them by calling myself German-American or Irish-American, I’m an American. If black people would just call themselves American, instead of constantly reminding people what continent their ancestors came from, it would be much easier on us all. If people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and other racial hatred instigators had their platforms taken away, most of America would be color-blind. We all have the same rights and freedoms in this country.

    • jasperjava October 30th, 2014 at 7:11 am

Riiiiiiight. Black people are the real racists. People who advocate against racism and white supremacist ideology are actually the “instigators”.

Don’t you have a cross-burning rally to attend?

      • Pie Guy October 31st, 2014 at 1:39 am

Sure, insinuate I belong to the KKK, real adult. There are racists of all colors. KKK, Black Panthers, etc. I advocate against racism myself. I do not agree with what the teacher said. I remarked on the fact it’s difficult to keep up with what black people like to be called. Personally, I’m sick of being called a cracker and worse JUST BECAUSE I AM WHITE. Do you even see the posts here from others who want to kill the teacher, and do bad things to him? Those posters are no better than he is. All ignorant.

        • jasperjava October 31st, 2014 at 1:56 am

If people call you a cracker (and no one here has done that) I’m sure it’s for a good reason. It’s because you obviously hate African-Americans. You blame racism on anti-racist civil rights leaders. You blame Black people for the problems with race relations. You really do sound like you’re a member of the KKK, but you don’t even realize it.

The term, African-American came about with the 14th amendment because before that they were called Africans.

The dictionary cites it’s origin as 1831.

      Actually, the truth is…..
‘ if people like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and other racial hatred instigators had their platforms taken away, most of America would be color-blind. We all would move further to having the same rights and freedoms in this country’.

    • Khary A October 30th, 2014 at 10:25 am

DO you take a pill to be this ignorant or is it a natural gift? I would begin to explain all the things wrong with what you stated here but I don’t have a lifetime to unmake your foolishness. Instead I’ll symbolically slap your nose with a rolled up news paper and then tell you to sit in the corner till you can have adult conversation.

      • Pie Guy October 31st, 2014 at 1:30 am

Smack yourself. I’m not a dog, nor am I ignorant. People of black color have changed many times the way they like to be referred to during my 50 years on this earth. I didn’t say a thing that was racist. I don’t see color, I see content of character. The disgusting thing is, a lot of the commenters here are just as bad as the guy calling those students names. Don’t you even think about the hate you see spewed right back at lighter skinned people, just because they’re lighter than you are? We’re all humans, aren’t we? Just because you call me white doesn’t mean I am for “white supremacy”. Such hateful people here. No wonder it doesn’t end.

        • whatthe46 October 31st, 2014 at 1:43 am

you really think that black people considered themselves “negros.” stay in your lane.

          • Khary A October 31st, 2014 at 3:24 pm

            My point exactly.

        • Khary A October 31st, 2014 at 3:40 pm

We “black people” didn’t name ourselves any of those things you’ve heard in your 50 years. They were
base designations created by a system that needed to have such things
categorized.I would most likely forget I was “black” if I wasn’t reminded so often that I am ” different” from what societal norms call normal. For the record i never called you a racist, I called you ignorant and even then it’s ignorant of your own social position and your station in juxtaposition with the “black” race at best misinformed. Those statements you made are a clear sign that you have bought into the system of “institutionalized racism”, It’s only partially on you. The other part is honestly the world you and I live in. First: The idea that it’s us “Blacks Africans” keep changing our designation is ludicrous. Once again “we” aren’t making those changes the power base is. Second: I don’t hate you…frankly i don’t know you and I don’t have the time to hate you. What I do have is a spare moment to tell you that your thought process is skewed and you need to re-evaluate your argument for debate before you make such a declarative statement.
You attack personalities like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson for stirring the racial pot of mistrust but the fact that you use them as an example only shows how limited you actually are when it comes to relations with the black race. I’ll say it here…Those entities do not represent me or my race in any way. they represent a faction of people trying to make their particular vision real, just like everyone else’s mouthpiece. By your logic I should assume that every white person is a clone of Tucker Carlson and Ann Coulter and we both know this is not true. I don’t want you to not speak your peace..I want you to do better. If you have theorems on why the black race is in the situations they are in today them I would prefer you to do it with empirical proof of causation as opposed to the regurgitated half truths and suppositions of countless years of ingrained bigotry. At the end of it all it comes down to this one factor…it isn’t up to an outside force to define who and what a people are it’s up to the people themselves, if that changes then so be it but if you’re going to be part of the great social experiment of the Union then you and others best get used to using the appropriate wording of the time…I wonder if Asians get this much flak for not wanting to be called Orientals?

          • Pie Guy November 1st, 2014 at 1:00 am

Can’t we all just be Americans? You know what Morgan Freeman said to a question regarding racism? He said “quit talking about it”. I think that’s a perfectly good idea. If everyone just took everybody else at face value, we wouldn’t have to be having discussions like this. I don’t judge anyone by their skin color. I don’t listen to Rush, as someone claimed, nor do I watch Fox news. I grew up watching Cosby, Fresh Prince, and other predominantly African-American shows. Since I was a small boy I’ve thought Cosby is a smart and funny man. I respect Allen West, Dr. Ben Carson, and many other African-Americans. I agree with their thoughts on government.

I will say this though, the signs I saw in tv coverage of ferguson with African-Americans proclaiming they want to kill all whites was particularly troubling to me. Why would they want to kill me or my family just because we are labelled “white”? I nor my family has done anything to warrant such threats. Unfortunately, there seems to be racists of every skin color. I believe there is only one human race, and we’re all part of it.

“If people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and other racial hatred instigators had their platforms taken away, most of America would be color-blind
I couldn’t help notice that you excluded some people from your list of racial instigators and their platforms.”
IE Rush Limbaugh (among many others).
      You remember that guy right?
The one who giggled maniacally as he played a song entitled
      “Barack the magic negro”?
      That guy
Remember? the guy who told a woman to take the bone out of her nose and call back?
      Yeah that’s the one.

      • Pie Guy October 31st, 2014 at 1:23 am

I don’t listen to Rush. I also said and other racial hatred instigators.

        • William October 31st, 2014 at 8:57 am

“I also said and other racial hatred instigators.”

Yeah, but I DID notice you conveniently exclude white people from your list of “instigators”.

      • Pie Guy November 1st, 2014 at 1:08 am

I don’t know what Rush says. See my other replies please.

    • CDaniel October 30th, 2014 at 4:57 pm

So, at least one of the girls identified as being Jamaican, as in she’s from Jamaica, and not born in Africa. So, there is one difference right there.

Oh; I hope someone makes sire the teacher never sees a classroom again.

      • AAASuperPatriot October 31st, 2014 at 9:44 am

So, at least one of the girls identified as being Jamaican, as in she’s from Jamaica, and not born in Africa.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but she’s still African-American.

The black Jamaicans originally ame from Africa just like white Jamaicans came from Europe. And Jamaica is part of the Americas.

        • CDaniel November 1st, 2014 at 10:53 am

That being said, the teacher still went on a unhinged rant. It shouldn’t matter what your ideology is (I.e. conservative or liberal); when a teacher flips out with inappropriate language she at the very least needs to be removed from a classroom setting.

    • whatthe46 October 31st, 2014 at 1:40 am

      you’re fuckin’ stupid as sh’t.

      • AAASuperPatriot October 31st, 2014 at 9:41 am

        He’s an Effing-American.

        😉

    • AAASuperPatriot October 31st, 2014 at 9:40 am

      >>Part of the problem is that Black Africans keep changing what they want
to be known as. Negro, Black, African-American, I can’t remember them
      all.

Although you seem like a racist, you raise a legitimate issue.

If a term is used negatively against someone, of course they want to change it.

It’s a natural response but you blame the blacks and their leaders! (That’s why you seem like a racist.)

The proper blame goes on the racists, not the victims of racism.

      • Pie Guy November 1st, 2014 at 1:05 am

I see your point, but by referencing Sharpton and Jackson, those are the people I’ve seen on tv recently pushing intolerance and distrust without awaiting facts. I don’t see white people doing that on tv, and I don’t listen to radio talk shows such as Rush, who may do those same things. I don’t know what he spews about, honest. Whether or not some do, I don’t know, it hasn’t come to my attention. I am not a racist, I am a humanist. I won’t call you any names if you don’t call me any. 🙂

  13. Warman1138 October 30th, 2014 at 6:21 am

Wow…I have no words for this other than who or what allowed this sub. teacher near a classroom.

  14. Warman1138 October 30th, 2014 at 6:29 am

The n-word is an insult, always was, always is and always will be.

    • AAASuperPatriot October 31st, 2014 at 9:27 am

Oh, I wish that were so.

As an educator I don’t allow it in class.

But my kids use it privately all the time. Even the black ones. Especially the black ones! It really bothers me.

When I have spoken with them about it, they claim it’s not an insult anymore.

  15. Warman1138 October 30th, 2014 at 6:45 am

Go back far enough in time and everybody has an ancestor in Africa, the birthplace of humanity. We are all from Africa, the things we perceive as race make up less than one percent of our genetic makeup.

  16. William October 30th, 2014 at 11:04 am

Here’s a thought. Why not just call them “Americans”.

    • jasperjava October 30th, 2014 at 11:54 am

Sure better than “slave” or the “N” word.

People have the right to self-identify.

  17. Carla Akins October 30th, 2014 at 1:23 pm

    It really does suit you.

    • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" October 30th, 2014 at 1:30 pm

I like it enough, that I changed my nick-name. Did you notice ?

      • Carla Akins October 30th, 2014 at 1:34 pm

I did, impressive. A sense of humor is always appreciated.

  18. AAASuperPatriot October 31st, 2014 at 9:23 am

Why was the teacher identifying students in racial terms? Was it a lesson on racism or slavery?

I work in the schools and I never use race or religion to identify the students.
