Two women who worked at a northern New Jersey cemetery are accused of pocketing thousands of dollars which was money meant for graves, authorities said on Friday.

[su_center_ad]NBC New York reports:

Bergen County prosecutors charged Denise Dagostino, 50, and Kathy Barbier, 42, both of Garfield, New Jersey, with theft by deception with the missing payments. Dagostino was also charged with falsifying records. Barbier was also charged with conspiracy to commit theft by deception.

Approximately $180,000 was taken from customers who paid for cemetery plots and mausoleum crypts. The former cemetery employees used the cash for their personal use, prosecutors say.

An investigation was launched by the prosecutor’s office after the pastor of St. Mary’s Assumption Church alerted them to concerns about the financial management of St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The women are being held in lieu of bail.

Couple of sweethearts, these two are. Just looking at them, I don’t think the money they would have made from their scheme would have made them any happier.
