Pastor: Women Who Have Sex Before Marriage Are ‘Filthy Dishrags’

Paul Chappell, founder and president of West Coast Baptist College and pastor of Lancaster Baptist Church, lamented what he perceives to be a lack of purity and modesty among women.
“One wonders, whatever happened to purity?” he asked in the sermon. “Whatever happened to that? Whatever happened to the days when girls said, I’m not going to be touched by every guy? I’m not going to walk down the aisle like a filthy dishrag on my wedding day. Whatever happened to that day?”…
“I don’t want to sound weird tonight, (but) there’s a reason when ladies come up here to sing that the rule, if you want to use it, the standard – I don’t care what you call it, call it legalism, call it control – I don’t care what you call it, there is a standard in this church that the dresses are going to come down to the knee when a lady stands up here,” Chappell said.

I have heard a number of sermons from quite a few Baptist preachers and have gotten to know a few.
None of them ever talked like that and were pretty nice people who tended to do a lot for the community.
Your reaction is what is desired here – to keep highlighting kooks to the end that people think they represent the rest of the group.
It’s what bigots do.
Fair-minded people judge a large group by what the overwhelming majority do or say.
There are millions of Baptists out there, and any group that large is going to have a number of nitwits who disgust us. Examine any group that large – left-handed people, golfers, jazz fans, New Yorkers, tall people, Germans, – and you’ll find a number of dolts among them on a regular basis if you take the time to look.
Take a look at the web pages of several Baptist churches where you live and see what sorts of activities the congregation is up to.

And as long as you keep them, and don’t disclaim them, and are fine with them being in positions of power, you are tainted by them. I don’t care how equitable your personal congregation might be, your church is still a problem when it enables and supports those like him. Even if 90% are great, if you have 10% like him that go pretty much unchallenged and occupy leadership positions, it taints the whole.

I beg to differ. I’ve lived in the south for 34 years and this matches my experience with baptist pastors and southern baptists/fundies in general. I judge them by their actions and I find them pretty dispicable.

But he does one thing that bugs me — he often asks Christian scholars, “Did Jesus really exist?”

Don’t get me wrong — it’s perfectly reasonable to ask if the biblical claims about Jesus are true. But, there is not reasonable doubt that Jesus existed.

There is plenty of reasonable doubt. Mostly because the only evidence for him is the Bible and similar works (“gnostic gospels” and such–later religious works.). Not a scrap of evidence elsewhere. Including in places you would expect to find some mention. Not evidence he didn’t exist, but it makes the doubt quite reasonable.
