Republican Staffer Goes After Obama’s Kids
Elizabeth Lauten, communications director for Rep. Stephen Fincher of Tennessee, attacked not only President Obama and the First Lady, claiming they “don’t respect their positions very much,” but attacked Malia and Sasha as well.
Lauten took to Facebook again with an apology, but it’s been deleted:
I reacted to an article and quickly judged the two young ladies in a way that I would never have wanted to be judged myself as a teenager. After many hours of prayer, talking to my parents and re-reading my words online, I can see more clearly how hurtful my words were. Please know that these judgmental feelings truly have no pace in my heart. Furthermore, I’d like to apologize to all of those who I have hurt and offended with my words, and pledge to learn and grow (and I assure you I have) from this experience.

This is just another in an enormously long list of egregious comments from the Right about our President and his family. I, for one, am sickened almost to the point of anger at what we’ve see over the last 6 years. I’m reaching some tipping point and am at a loss to think of a suitable outlet from my impending anger. It’s no longer enough to know that history will record with accuracy the shabby and disrespectful treatment of the President beginning just before he took office, and the RWers will be the infamous of the these years, . Frankly, I expected unprincipled and petty, but what has happened is just vile. This sickening event at the hands of Lauten just gave me a big push toward that edge. What a colossal harpy Lauten is – a “mean girl” who never outgrew adolescence. Blech.

I got plenty of criticsm from the regulars because I frequently posted that trolls would leave if they didn’t have guaranteed partners to dance with. A few snarks at a troll is sometimes warranted, but actually repeating SSDD is making the place Troll Disney. They built it and they came. One of the practices that Markus instituted at RS was moderator warnings. Works well. When a mod gives a gentle hint, the regulars take it. Trolls – not so much, thenZAP!

I know that we’ve had this discussion before, but kids are off limits. They did not run for office, had no choice and live in a fish bowl – this stands regardless of party affiliation.
This aside, I have never in six years seen the girls anything but completely appropriate in dress and behavior. Which brings me to my last point – what bars is she hanging out in? Granted I don’t get out much these days, but I can pretty much guarantee this is not how they’re clubbers are dressed.

I took the time to read through all 160+ comments in this thread. After reading them all, there is only thing I can add to this discussion.
Fellow lefties, we demonstrate loud and clear that we are the ones who are truly pro family and pro life recognizing that attacking children to make a political point is vile and despicable.
This woman is a symptom of the moral depravity infesting much of the political right. Let us never sink to their level where even children are now in the crosshairs of character assassination.
Let us continue to demonstrate that being pro family is not just a bumper sticker, it is a way of life proudly on display in this thread tonight.

This thing that wrote what she did.. should take a good look at herself in the mirror before she starts criticizing other people.. especially young kids that have really nothing to do with the politics or anything else that is going on.. I should never expect anything that comes from the teabaggin-repugs to be worth reading/listening to.. this woman clearly has some issues personally.. As one of my Doctors says from time to time.. “He has seen many assholes in his practice, but none have been really what one would call perfect” This woman needs a bit of reality ..and again.. she needs to really look at herself in the mirror without the garments that are holding a lot of that stuff in.

The first thing that came to mind was criticism of the Bush twins whose behavior was not always admirable. I had a few – ok, a lot – of sharp things to say about them, but I’m not a public figure or an important staffer of one.
Lauten should have not said what she did. Limbaugh and other critics would have certainly done so.
That said, Sasha and Malia do have a certain responsibility, and being teenagers is no excuse. I know this from my own example. I grew up going to various social events, ceremonies and other functions in that world. Many were highly formal affairs with cabinet-level officials, members of Congress and the highest-ranking members of the military. I am proud to say my behaviour at none of those things ever caused my parents any embarrassment.
We were raised from an early age to be on our best behaviour at such events, and it was something we took pride in. My shoes always were beautifully shined, my dress was appropriate and my manners were well-spoken of. I bowed to the ladies and shook hands with the gents, looking them in the eye. We were raised to never be obsequious to such people, because none were our social superiors and we were never the sorts of children who come in and put on a show or acted up.
For us it was a pleasure to put our best manners on display as well-bred Southerners and that remains.
For my sister and I, we were raised to be damned sure we represented our family well and it was important for us to keep uppermost in mind that our parents would be proud of us and to never ever give anyone cause to think otherwise in the sorts of functions described, above.
Many times we didn’t want to go to some of these things. Very often we were the only children invited and it could be quite boring. But we never, ever showed that and would only express such an opinion in private to our mother or father. To the world, we were happy to be there.
Because of our behaviour we got to go to things no other children got to go to.
On other occasions in other circumstances we acted up, but never at something like this.
I’ve only seen a few pictures, and for all I know, Sasha and Malia may have made faces when their father was doing shtick, and that would be fine with me. But I recall another occasion when they got off a plane in Britain and were wearing jeans and t-shirts or something like that. One hopes whoever is in charge of protocol had a word in private with the president and first lady about it. That should be as far as it needs to go.
