More people are shopping this weekend than voted in the most recent election.

[su_center_ad]

The number of Black Friday participants comes from the National Retail Federation, which predicted 140.1 million would go shopping this weekend — a slight dip from the 140.3 million who went out last year.

According to data collected by the United States Election Project, only 76.9 million people turned out to vote in the 2014 midterm elections — the lowest turnout since World War II, when the population of America was less than 150 million people.[su_csky_ad]

We always said, that they want us to be consumers, not citizens.

We clearly suffer from a lack of creativity. All we need to do is make Black Friday a national holiday / voting day. Then, put voting booths in front of the stores.

An ‘I Voted’ sticker gets you an extra 5% off any purchase at the Mall. All of a sudden everyone is voting. A dream?

Blue light specials a dream? It’s the gawd damned AMERICAN WAY!

Fantastic concept. My only reservation is that the stickers are way too easy to counterfeit in this age of color laser printers less than $500.

But yes if there were some way to provide proof of voting that was difficult to forge and did not intrude on privacy, I think it would be a great motivator. The sticker would be valid until the next election, so there would be no voting just once and get discounts for life.

I don’t consider “off election years” any such thing. ALL elections are important and the Dem voters once again dropped the ball and opened the gate for the Teapublicans (just like in 2010). Will Dem voters ever learn what voter apathy means??

Why am I not surprised? Americans as a whole are self-centered and not known for thinking things through. Like one thought that comes to me is, would I want to buy a delicate piece of electronic equipment that people have been grabbing and tugging at, thrown on the floor and piled on?

    Amend the Constitution if necessary.

    Amendment 28

Congress shall have the authority to tax non-voting eligible citizens at a higher rate than those who vote. Citizens with a household income below a minimum to be specified by Congress shall be exempt.

Excellent! That’ll get the 1% off their duffs and down to the polls!

Instead of elaborate schemes to get people to vote you could try giving them a good reason to vote. Treat the voter like a customer. Elections are the same as black friday. If the customer doesn’t show up they don’t care for what you were selling.

The best welfare of our republic is a good reason to vote and we already have it.

Interesting that you equate one of our most fundamental rights with the purchase of a big screen television.

“The best welfare of our republic is a good reason to vote…”

Now if only a candidate would run with that sentiment.

        • Larry Schmitt November 29th, 2014 at 5:18 pm

Don’t the republicans always run against welfare?

      • Red Eye Robot November 30th, 2014 at 2:16 am

It’s even more interesting how the left has spent a century trying to reverse the servant / master relationship the voter has with government to make Government the Master.

So… Vote this Tuesday and get another vote free?

Or the statist approach, Buy 3 tires get the 4th for 4x the price and we give it to someone who doesn’t have a car

More people voted on black Friday than shopped on election day.
