An Oklahoma woman has been hospitalized after she tried to fend off two people who tried to rob her at her home in Tulsa, but ended up accidentally shooting herself.

Tulsa

[su_center_ad]Tulsa police said she was outside having a yard sale when a man and woman approached her. It’s not clear how it happened, but the three ended up inside the woman’s residence.

NewsOn6 reports:

According to TPD Sgt. Dedlorn Sanders, while the suspects began gathering up the victim’s belongings, she produced a gun to defend herself. Sanders said the male suspect tried to wrangle the gun away from her, and the victim accidentally shot herself in the hand during the struggle.

TPD said the victim is in her 20s and is in serious condition at a Tulsa hospital. Her 5-year-old daughter was at home and witnessed the shooting, Sanders said. The child was released into her father’s care.

Police said the suspects were gone when officers arrived, but they found the woman walking nearby and arrested her. The man still is at large, Sanders said.

This is simply sad and depressing.

    • edmeyer_able November 30th, 2014 at 11:59 am

What’s sad and depressing to me is that some people believe a gun is for everyone and will solve all the world’s inequities.

      • mea_mark November 30th, 2014 at 12:04 pm

If all those guns were pointed at the top .1% it might make a good start at removing a lot of the inequities. Problem is, they are usually pointed at someone who has been demonized by the media that is controlled by those at the top.

A happy gun story for me is the one where the gun-nut shoots off their privates while fondling their gun.

          • FrankenPC . November 30th, 2014 at 12:49 pm

Haha! Yeah. That’s a good one. I mean, nobody died, but there was still universal justice.

          • M D Reese November 30th, 2014 at 1:26 pm

Exactly. And I’ve seen a lot of what I can only describe and gunnut porno–hairy, pot-bellied guys posing nude with all their “Precious!” guns and knives and extended (heehee) magazines. I recently tripped over one of a young guy, naked, obligatory beer-belly and limp privates, (uncut) pulling back on a hunting bow…and a video of a guy (clothed, thankfully) shooting off an assault-style rifle on semi-auto while balancing the butt (of the gun) on his privates…some things you just can’t unsee.
There is a very weird psycho-sexual dynamic going on with these guys. It’s really sick.

      • M D Reese November 30th, 2014 at 12:06 pm

Yup–the answer to too much gun violence is of course, MORE GUNS! Especially more guns in the hands of people who do not know how to use them.

  2. Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 11:41 am

So ask yourself, She saw their faces and could identify them. How would this have ended if she didn’t have a gun?

    • edmeyer_able November 30th, 2014 at 11:48 am

Yes because no one who has ever been mugged carjacked robbed raped or otherwise accosted has lived to tell about it. Do you ever think before you post…asking for a friend.

      • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 12:13 pm

Here is what I mean, and you make a perfect example of what I am talking about. You are so willing to try to justify your hatred for anything that has to do with a firearm. That you are willing to sit here and try to justify, that she should have done done nothing, because other people have gotten away robbing, raping, carjacked, etc. But because this story is that she shot herself while struggling with the person, versus the police are investigating the double murder of a woman and her daughter. We actually get to have this debate. So in my opinion, good for her.

Granted, neither you or I was in that home to know exactly what was going on. But I doubt they were having tea and crumpets.

        • edmeyer_able November 30th, 2014 at 12:17 pm

You take too much for granted, I don’t hate firearms, I own 3 rifles and 2 shotguns and 2 pistols. I don’t ever envision a scenario where I’ll ever have to use them for defense.

          • FrankenPC . November 30th, 2014 at 2:09 pm

Same here. 1 pistol, 2 rifles, 2 shotguns. Al of them I do target shooting with (20s on trap!). Never used them in any other capacity. I grew up with guns. They are just a skill to me. I consider myself progressive.

        • edmeyer_able November 30th, 2014 at 12:21 pm

Tell us, how many times a day do you envision a scenario where you shoot a bad guy, is it more than 10?

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 1:20 pm

            About 25

I use to, Just stopped wearing them after a while. Got to expensive

        • jasperjava November 30th, 2014 at 8:18 pm

Where in this story is there any mention that the robbers were armed? The only gun in the equation seems to be the one brought by the woman who was injured. The gun didn’t prevent the robbery, much less the “double murder” that only exists in your sick blood-soaked imagination.

Guns are lethal weapons, and should be used only as last resort. Situations like this are only made worse when inexperienced people try to “solve” them with violence. That’s why bank tellers are always told to cooperate with armed robbers, not to reach for a shotgun under the counter and blast away willy-nilly. Leave the criminals to trained professionals.

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" December 1st, 2014 at 7:08 am

If you are willing to take that chance, good for you. I am not.

    • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 11:48 am

She simply could have removed herself and child. (I’m guessing) The article indicates they were gathering her stuff (to steal) not that they were holding her hostage. Although the several of the comments on the actual article disagree, I’m willing to bet she had no safety education. Of course, I could be completely off-base because they give no details.

      • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 12:01 pm

You have to ask yourself. Who is going to just let your victim run at the door? Most likely, held at some point with a threat of violence of some form. The article says, that the shot went off during a struggle, so I dont think safety really played a part. Although, if she was able to get to her gun, she should have maintained a distance. Who knows if that was possible though.

        • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 12:52 pm

I know it “felt” like she wasn’t proficient with firearms, but I was having a hard time put it in words. Just knowing the gun was unintentionally discharged within view of a child makes me very uncomfortable. I believe everyone has a right to defend themselves but arm yourself with a weapon you don’t truly know how to use properly is at best irresponsible and at worst, dangerous. The out of control, “I get to carry a gun into Kroger’s and there’s nothing you can do about it” attitude has made given an entire generation of millennials the impression they only need to be proficient at GTA to be a gun owner. It’s a broad brush, but it applies to too many to ignore.

          • FrankenPC . November 30th, 2014 at 12:58 pm

Agreed. To me, the point of a weapon is to keep it out of sight and only use it if you or your loved ones are in physical danger. Thieves can take whatever they want. Hell, everything that is critical to me including photos is all digital now. Things can be replaced. Why risk anyone’s life for things?

Regarding actually using a weapon, you can shoot a thousand rounds out of a gun at the range, but you can never simulate the intense adrenaline reaction to real violence. That adrenaline can do anything to anyone. It’s totally unpredictable. That makes guns really dangerous in inexperienced hands.

          • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 1:03 pm

I think age plays a part, too. I know now (at 53) that I’m just not built to be a gun owner. I am not so sure this is something I would admit in my 20’s or 30’s. You know, when I had all the knowledge of the world, and was invincible.

          • FrankenPC . November 30th, 2014 at 1:28 pm

We’d all generally be better off without machines that kill I think. That seems like a good general direction to go. Clearly that concept is not shared with everyone.

          • Margie Bateman Osgood November 30th, 2014 at 4:47 pm

You took the words out of my mouth, I have been trying to convince my gun toting friends of these facts, most of whom have children at home and they all insist it doesn’t apply to them…….GAH

    • edmeyer_able November 30th, 2014 at 11:55 am

I’m guessing she wouldn’t have a gun shot wound.

      • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 12:01 pm

She could have wound up her and her daughter dead also.

        • M D Reese November 30th, 2014 at 12:04 pm

Or she could have flown on an airplane and sat in the window seat. It is what it is.

        • edmeyer_able November 30th, 2014 at 12:05 pm

And she could have shot her daughter by mistake as well.
This incident follows the fact that a gun in the house used for protection is 27 times more likely to injure a resident of that home, but continue to deny reality and convince yourself that the little scenarios you create in your mind are true.

        • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 12:17 pm

Statistically, she put herself and her daughter at a higher risk by having the gun in the house. Once she had been shot, my assumption would be they could have easily taken the gun from her and killed her and her daughter if they had they chose to. Trust me, I realize she’s the victim but it gives me pause as a parent that this would have been her initial response.

          • M D Reese November 30th, 2014 at 1:38 pm

Having a gun in the house makes it very likely that someone WILL get shot. The most likely candidates are the people who live there–teenagers getting shot sneaking back in late, children who find a gun under a couch after it fell out of uncle’s pants when he laid down for a nap, and of course the husband shooting his wife because she served the wrong mustard with his hot dog.

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 1:40 pm

Well! What would you have done if you were served the wrong mustard???

DAMNIT get it right, will ya…

          • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 1:48 pm

That’s only on Oklahoma, and when family is over.

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 2:00 pm

They say you cant pick your family, and sometimes it all the excuse you really need… =)

          • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 2:05 pm

So tempting, but my lack of coordination is a well-established fact.

        • edmeyer_able November 30th, 2014 at 1:31 pm

So why didn’t she die, it appears the robbers had enough control over the gun, she suffered one wound why do you think they left them alive?

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 1:34 pm

Panic i would guess. Obviously we dont know if she maintained control over her firearm after the incident.

      • M D Reese November 30th, 2014 at 12:04 pm

I swear, the gun trolls have alarms that alert them to any gun story, anywhere, anytime.

    • ExPFCWintergreen November 30th, 2014 at 1:39 pm

It would have ended without her being shot in the hand and with her stuff gone and the female perpetrator in custody and the male still at large. In other words, it would have ended exactly as it did except for the fact that this woman is quite likely going to lose the use of her hand — if not the hand itself. Because here’s the trick, you silly person: THE BAD GUYS WRESTLED THE GUN AWAY FROM HER, WHICH IS WHY SHE WOUND UP SHOOTING HERSELF INSTEAD OF THEM. Yet magically they didn’t shoot her dead while she was writhing in pain. So much for your “she could have wound up her and her daughter dead also” theory. Guns don’t kill people; the kinds of idiots who own guns kill people — and often themselves.

          • ExPFCWintergreen November 30th, 2014 at 1:57 pm

Ammosexuals don’t need cash. They just need help. Serious, long-term, psychiatric help.

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 2:06 pm

No, we need cash… Need to buy more Ammo. It can be very expensive, you know?

          • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 2:10 pm

I am told that it is but have no basis, can you put it in practical terms. If you visit the shooting range or have one at home, how often would a standard collector shoot and what would ammo cost?

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 2:19 pm

I will give you an example. I will go to the range with my wife and we will take a few different guns with us. to walk onto the range, is $25.00 per person. My wife, likes to shoot the .38 revolver. She will go through 3 boxes of 50. At a cost of about $24.00 per box. I will typically shoot my 45’s, .40, and my 9mm. Anywhere from 2-3 (50 rds) boxes a piece. And this not even talking about taking any rifles with us either. So if you do the math:
            Range Fee: 25×2 $50
            .38 Ammo 24×3 $72
            9mm 20 x 2 $40
            .40 cal 24 x 2 $48
            .45 cal 28 x 2 $56
Total: $266 just in Ammo, then of course, you have all of your cleaning supplies you need to clean everything when you get home.

          • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 2:37 pm

Ouch. I can see how it would be prohibitive. (not that I find that a valid excuse) I don’t budget $200 a month for groceries, much less what I would label entertainment.

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 3:06 pm

Ummmmmm, you might call it entertainment…

So off the wall question. When you grocery shop, do you use a coupon program?? And what main grocery store do you shop at?

          • Carla Akins November 30th, 2014 at 4:00 pm

I only buy for myself, I get fruits and vegetables from a local farmer’s market at a discount, rarely eat meat, don’t drink soda or eat snacks. I eat a lot of homemade soup. Coffee is probably my biggest expense and I have to buy it at Walmart. They are the only local store to carry the brand I like.

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 2:24 pm

Also, those costs are figure on target ammo only. If you train with defensive rounds or law enforcement rounds. you can another 50% to that cost.

          • Pistol-Packing AKA "Susie" November 30th, 2014 at 2:31 pm

As far as how often? Well I guess that depends on your disposable income at that moment. But I know a lot of guys that go once a week.

To be fair, there’s no way to know when the window was broken. It may have happened recently, and she already had a yard sale planned she had to attend to. She may be a renter waiting for the landlord to schedule repairs. While you can certainly make an argument regarding gun safety vs home protection–and question whether having a gun in a house with a child makes much sense–but adding to it by pointing out a cardboarded window without knowing the context is a bit of a leap. For that matter, she may be a divorce or window who obtained the gun from an ex- or late-husband, or as a gift from someone, and did not even spend her own money on it.

Sorry, but your comments are based on too many guesses about this person.

To me the problem with using a gun for home protection when you have a child is that you have to chose to make the gun available, or safe. You can’t do both. Any kind of safe or trigger lock makes it problematic as a home defense tool (“excuse me, Mr. Home Invader, but could you wait here while I hit the gun safe?”), but just putting it “out of reach” does NOT work for any child. Ever.

For people with children the best home defense is a large, loyal dog. Our son, now grown and in the military, had a 140 pound Rottweiler/Lab mix as a child. Sweetest dog in the world unless he didn’t trust someone.
