At least one armed man has taken hostages at a Sydney cafe.

[su_center_ad]

Hundreds of armed police have sealed off the normally busy Martin Place in Sydney’s central business district.

Pictures on Australian television have shown at least three people with their hands up against a window, and a black flag with Arabic writing.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has described the incident as “deeply concerning”.

He said it was not yet clear who was behind the incident or what their motives were, but said law enforcement agencies were well-equipped to respond.

In a brief news conference, he said the National Security Committee had been briefed, and urged Australians to go about their lives but to be alert.[su_csky_ad]

I’m hearing conflicting reports. I didn’t write about it because I didn’t want to throw out bad information. I’ve been watching this hashtag since it started.

Lots of info here if you can get through the bullshit.

Maybe best to just watch Australian TV live and see what is going on:

I’ve been doing that, too. I have sooo many tabs open it’s unreal. I was going to turn in early tonight but when this happened, I couldn’t get off the computer.

Yeah me too – ABC Radio Player, ABC News Live, Twitter, DailyTelegraph.com.au, Alan.Com, BBC, Reuters just as well – absolutely nothing on broadcast tv in New York – the state of U.S. media is absolutely laughable.

For those who aren’t aware, ABC in Australia is completely different from ABC in America. ABC in Australia is a government-owned TV network that operates independently. Probably our best news source, they aren’t scared to criticise the government that pays them.

Definitely a good choice to discover info about the situation, without the kind of filtering that gets done by many media companies in order to create a narrative.
