Limbaugh Rails Against Black James Bond
[su_right_ad]In the hacked Sony emails the possibility of black actor Idris Elba playing James Bond was leaked. This upset Rush Limbaugh.
“James Bond is a fictional character, obviously,” Limbaugh told his listeners of the spy character created by Ian Fleming. “He was white and Scottish, period.”
“I know it’s racist to probably even point this out,” the host continued, uttering the beginning of a sentence that should probably never be finished, “but the franchise needs to get with it!” He added, “We had 50 years of white Bonds because Bond was white!”
After a detour through Jay Z’s favorite drink (“Crystal?”) Limbaugh suggested the casting would be analogous to casting George Clooney and Kate Hudson as President Barack Obama and First LadyMichelle Obama. Or how about Kelsey Grammar as Nelson Mandela? He then suggested Rob Reiner as “early” Al Sharpton. And George C. Scott (who’s dead) as Colin Powell and Scarlett Johansson as Condoleezza Rice. And so on…
Limbaugh admitted that all those people are real-life figures and James Bond is a made-up character. But in his view, 007 has always been white and should stay that way.

I was under the impression that there were several ’00’ agents at any one time. Each ‘slot’ was filled with a new agent should one retire or get killed off. Wasn’t there a book/film with one of the other ’00’ agents in it?

This article got me thinking. As we know, that’s a dangerous thing!
When I was younger, I would be upset about something like this. Trying to wrap my brain about Bond suddenly being not-white would be aesthetically disturbing to me. Now that I’m older and know more about archetypes and sub-text to much of the narrative we consume daily from media, I’m OK with it AS LONG AS he IS BOND. We all know what “Bondness” is. Cool, calculating, sly, handsome, slick, funny, and an actual super agent…deadly. And of course he’s got the je ne sais quoi by the truck load.
I WILL be pissed if he doesn’t pull it off though. But this particular actor seems like a primo candidate, so probably not much to worry about.

Jesus wasn’t white…why doesn’t he rail against that as well? Jesus was a Jew. When I heard this, I immediately thought it was a fantastic idea. Yes, he is super yummy and he definitely has the chops to pull it off. I had no issue with the casting change in my head –
Over on Twitter, our friend Tengrain proposed Bond as a woman and I was unable to wrap my head around that idea. I’m not sure what that says about me, maybe I just have to warm to the idea. :-/

I’ll admit that, at first, I didn’t like the idea. As a comic book nerd, I’ve seen a lot of my beloved characters race-swapped in service to political correctness, and it’s diminished the quality of some in my mind.
Then, I look at my little brothers, who are black, dressed up as the Hulk and Iron Man, and I suddenly care a whole lot less.
Idris Elba would be an awesome Bond, plain and simple.

If his objection is that the original was white and Scottish, the only one who fits that mold (mould?) is Connery. Pierce Brosnan is Irish, isn’t he? They own the rights, they can do whatever they want. His objection is the same as with a black Santa. He doesn’t want to see blah people get jobs.

Frankly, I don’t give a Damon about Limbaugh’s opinion regarding this, or any other issue he feels does not fit neatly into his narrow-minded, racists, lying, pill popping, white, fat pass! Ian Fleming wrote the James Bond book series, and all the Bonds were probably white, and a part of the Scottish elite. Fleming’s was born into the Scottish aristocracy, so in Limbaugh’s world, all Bond characters would be upper class Scottish toffs

If Limbaugh even knows Fleming’s was born privileged, I doubt he does. That means Connery, though Scottish did not qualify cuz he’s from a working class background. Pierce Bronson is Irish, Roger Moore, is English born, but I think Moore is Irish name. So too was Daniels, all Irish, minus Connery
The new Annie is black, and up for an award, he probably hates that too. Tough.

I think it’d be interesting to portray 007 as a black man. However, I think they would need a story as to why 007 suddenly is black. Like if Daniel Craig retired as 007 or something and they needed a new 007. I think that would then be kickass.
