A 46-year-old North Carolina man is in the hospital after being shot by his 3-year-old grandson.

Area media outlets report 46-year-old Nicholas Cardillo III was shot on Thursday. He was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem for a gunshot wound to the neck.

Sheriff David Grice said Cardillo arrived at home Thursday and unloaded the magazine from his semi-automatic handgun. One round was left in the chamber.

Deputies said the grandmother was in another part of the house when Cardillo heard a noise. He went to see what it was and saw the child holding the gun.

Grice said Cardillo told the boy to put the gun down. The sheriff said the boy then shot the grandfather.[su_csky_ad]

This year is not off to a good start.

Obviously, if you don’t know how to use a gun, you shouldn’t be allowed to have one. This “accidental” shooting (It will be called that) could have happened the other way around.

Did you ever drive off into the farm areas around Omaha??

    • fahvel January 10th, 2015 at 12:39 pm

what % of gun jerks in the usa really know how to handle a firearm? Very small I would suspect since the effective use of arms takes a long time with lots of training and continual practice.

      • whatthe46 January 10th, 2015 at 4:46 pm

yet, a cop just shot his roomate in the head. so much for training.

Again and again. The simple magazine disconnect safety feature would have prevented this tragedy. http://blog.nugun.org/2010/02/25/the-hotly-debated-magazine-disconnect-safety/

But that would mean that Obama is coming to take their guns away.

      • William January 10th, 2015 at 12:09 pm

If we could get the people at the Fair and balanced network to utter something about Obama coming for their cars, the auto industry couldn’t keep up with demand.

Every time there’s a mass shooting, and anyone even mentions some kind of safety provisions, gun and ammo sales shoot through the roof (pun unintended).

The magazine safety, largely disliked by very active handgun shooters, is a very good idea for the casual gun owner. Simply put, if you take the magazine out, the gun won’t fire even though there is one in the chamber. The situation became problematic when the transition from revolver to semi auto gained speed. You’ll see it a lot in movies. Someone removes the magazine to “empty” the gun. Out of sight out of mind but there is still one in the chamber. I know cops that liked the feature. When you arrived at the jail you could simply disable your weapon by removing the magazine before putting it in the safe.
Now here is the sad part. There is almost no press given to the benefit of this safety, but the internet is littered with articles on how to disable it, should you have the misfortune to get one of these “sissified” guns.

He put a gun with a round in the chamber on a surface low enough for a 3 y.o. to reach…responsible gun owner strikes again

The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Are toddlers not part of “the people”? What right do the gun-grabbers have to restrict the Constitutional rights of Preschool-americans? How do you expect to have a “well-regulated militia” if babies and children are denied access to lethal weapons?

Next thing you know they’ll want to take guns away from other fine Americans, just because they’re mentally ill, poorly trained, incompetent, criminals, domestic terrorists, or members of white supremacist lynch mobs. Aren’t they all part of “the people” as well? Don’t you have any respect for the Constitution?

NRA will soon release this statement “If the grandparents where armed, they could of shot the baby before the baby shot the grandfather.”

Just got a great idea for a children’s board book: L’il Tommy Stands His Ground.

“I’ll put this gun down when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers!” brave L’il Tommy shouted at his tyrannical grandparent, hearkening back to his Founding Father forefathers at Concord and Lexington. “The Supreme Court clearly showed in its ruling in _Heller_ that I have an individual right to keep and bear arms,” he added, cooling racking back the slide and chambering a round. L’il Tommy’s grandfather, who once foolishly voted for the Democrat Party, wisely saw he was outgunned by the boy’s He-Manly mastery of firearms technology and sagely reasoned jurisprudence, bowed his head in shame, and said, “You’re right, L’il Tommy. I’ll get you that Life Membership in the NRA I’ve always promised you for Christ-mas.” Wrapping his arms around the brave tot defender of Second Amendment liberty, Grandpa added, “Let’s get dressed and go to the gun show. A boy as good as you deserves a new AR-15.”

none of these people seem to realize, that at some point, these children will know they are responsible for the deaths or near deaths of a family member because they needed their guns. i especially think of the tot that killed his mother in walmart. what will his psyche (sp) be like?

    • tracey marie January 10th, 2015 at 7:09 pm

just like his moms, a dumbass

      • Carla Akins January 11th, 2015 at 7:51 am

Tracey please tell me you’re not calling a child a dumbass. Most likely, even with great parental support and lots of therapy the child will carry underserved guilt his entire life.

  10. Bunya January 10th, 2015 at 6:04 pm

I hope gramps goes straight to jail after he’s released from the hospital.
On the upside, this will make a great commercial for the NRA.
“Our new Smith & Wesson 460V revolver is so easy to use, even a child can operate it.”

Too bad there wasn’t a video of this so they could show it at family gatherings, good times!……../s
