[su_right_ad]In the first few weeks of 2015, we have been reminded of just how far back in time religious extremists would like to set back the progress that humankind has made. Even in celebrating unity against the terrorists who attacked French satire magazine Charlie Hebdo, an ultra-Orthodox Jewish Israeli newspaper published a photo from last weekend’s unity rally in which, as you can see, all of the women who participated in the world leader photo were edited out. In the actual photos, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and others locked arms in solidarity with Charlie Hebdo, but for readers of HaMevaser, they might as well not have even existed.

The paper’s editor said he didn’t want to tarnish the memory of those killed in the attacks:

“Including a picture of a woman into something so sacred, as far as we are concerned, it can desecrate the memory of the martyrs and not the other way around,” (HaMevaser editor Binyamin Lipkin) said.

that’s not progress, that’s a list of things all as a product of war and dominance and power mongering. I asked where “humankind” made progress.

We made tremendous progress in the way we have made fuller participation in life more possible for the disabled.
Our society has undergone a sea change on this one, as well as how we regard those who are mentally disabled.
We now have handicapped-access bathrooms but I remember when they were few and far between, before the ADA. Maybe today people take for granted the curb cuts, ramps and other things to make it easier for the handicapped, but I remember when they were shut out of a lot of things.
Same with those with mental issues.
Below I listed several other things.

Make your women shave their head, they can’t see you having sex with them, God wants you to have dangly hair, but only in certain places…
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say “We probably are.”

Well almost all of the US and UK media chickened out and didn’t show the cover of the latest Charlie Hebdo because it might offend religious extremists – so no there is absolutely no difference.

      The Washington Post ran it

And the others who did not are agreeing with the murderers in principle – they just disagree on tactics – their cowardice gives strength to the wrong side of the argument.
If you volunteer to give up your rights to freedom of speech so easily, and at a time when such a commitment is needed more than ever, you really should not be in the publishing or news business.

I think we both feel they should have run the cover and had it on every news stand around the world, that was my initial opinion. One thought that gives me pause is considering whether they would have run it on the front page otherwise.
But when it comes to running it, the pres should have known if they all did it at the same time there would be strength in numbers and the bad guys would know they couldn’t strike everywhere.

We are a lot smarter then that
Nobody bothered to be in the picture so no erasing was needed

    Ridickalous.
As for me, I’d rather be in the march with all the womens!

But hey, check it out. In the paper’s photo, right over the shoulder of the black guy is Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts!

Good, …do you think you would have been just as happy in medieval times?

        • fahvel January 18th, 2015 at 6:52 pm

any time is good if one knows what to do with their speck of existence.

          • Apocalypse January 18th, 2015 at 7:54 pm

So you would be just as happy without plumbing, soap, reliable sources of food without endless toil, dental care, ability to travel , and of course…commenting on the internet?
