Powerful New York State legislator Sheldon Silver was taken into federal custody Thursday. The New York Times reported:

[su_center_ad]

Details of the specific charges to be brought against Mr. Silver were unclear on Wednesday night, but one of the people with knowledge of the matter said they stemmed from payments that Mr. Silver received from a small law firm that specializes in seeking reductions of New York City real estate taxes. The total amount of the payments was unclear, but another person has said they were substantial and were made over several years.

Mr. Silver failed to list the payments from the firm, Goldberg & Iryami, on his annual financial disclosure filings with the state, as required.

Several months ago, federal prosecutors in the office of Preet Bharara, the United States attorney for the Southern District of New York, subpoenaed documents from a personal injury firm that also paid Mr. Silver, income that he did disclose, one person with the knowledge of the matter said. Like others, he spoke on the condition of anonymity because the charges had not been announced.

And Alan makes my point with reporting just the words “powerful New York State legislator”. The words should have been “powerful New York State DEMOCRAT legislator”. You could bet a whole years salary that had it been a Republican, the word Republican would have been mentioned. The fact is, his political party affiliation is relevant to the truthful and accurate reporting of the story.

He won’t be an elected democrat ever again. We don’t like to vote for criminals once we know who they are, unlike some other political parties.

That didn’t stop weenie from trying again? LOL

I’m sure the dems are up to their necks in it too…but they are a little more subtle..

      • Spirit of America January 23rd, 2015 at 8:58 am

seriously, is it a chip to expect equal reporting… if a party is mentioned prominently when wrong doing, shouldn’t both be mentioned prominently when wrong doing?

        • arc99 January 23rd, 2015 at 9:41 am

It most certainly is a “chip” for a conservative to come to this site complaining about editorial content.

This is a LIBERAL website. This story links to a story about a Democratic politician whose party affiliation appears in the first sentence of the second paragraph.

I do not have any patience with people who insist that this site demonstrate some kind of “objectivity” that is nowhere to be found on sites like dailycaller or redstate.

wayout needs to provide a link where he criticizes the editorial style of sites such as those. then maybe his argument will have some merit. until then, it is nothing but hypocrisy to criticize only this or other liberal sites.

          • Spirit of America January 23rd, 2015 at 9:48 am

My view is to do the right thing regardless of what others do.

Being a liberal or conservative site reporting on political/social activities doesn’t mean one must slant/omit/enhance.

I have no problem w/a site having only left or right articles, but if going to have both, treat them equal.

“wayout…it is nothing but hypocrisy to criticize only this or other liberal sites.”
            Totally agree.

            just my opinion.

        • rg9rts January 23rd, 2015 at 10:39 am

That is because of the outstanding number of gopees caught down and dirty..

        • Spirit of America January 23rd, 2015 at 7:58 pm

No idea, I don’t follow links to read a story from here,

    • Spirit of America January 23rd, 2015 at 8:55 am

That’s who is sweating now… the ‘why’ of dropping the commission; won’t be pretty if developed.

  5. Denise January 22nd, 2015 at 12:36 pm

Mercy me! An elected official, being arrested for misconduct! Whoda thought?

  6. tracey marie January 22nd, 2015 at 1:14 pm

Good, now throw his ass in jail. See goptp this is what you do to your politicians who are crooks, not reelect them to office or beg them to run for President

    • Jeff Allen January 23rd, 2015 at 6:45 am

Is that why after being found guilty on 11 charges, Charlie Rangel was simply asked to forfeit his Ways and Means chair and was re-elected twice since?

      • Budda January 23rd, 2015 at 8:49 am

An ethics panel found him guilty of ethics violations. That is a big difference than criminal charges. See, there really is a difference if you know the facts.

        • Spirit of America January 23rd, 2015 at 8:54 am

it was a deal to avoid criminal prosecution, it was in the papers.

        • Jeff Allen January 25th, 2015 at 9:13 am

Being found guilty of knowingly doing wrong is a character issue that doesn’t parse between criminal and ethical violations when the public has elected someone to be the keepers of their interests. See there really is a difference when you apply a set of moral codes instead of trying to find the “less bad” in those with whom our politics align.

          • Budda January 25th, 2015 at 1:04 pm

So by your opinion there is no difference between a murderer and a shop lifter?

          • Jeff Allen January 28th, 2015 at 7:14 am

That is exactly the sophomoric leaps in logic we have come to expect and why resignations are ALWAYS demanded immediately when allegations are made against R’s and “let’s not jump to conclusions” when D’s are. The hypocrisy is epic and he left doesn’t even try anymore.

” 11 charges” you were equating ethical violations with criminal charges, talk about leaps of logic. You also assume hypocrisy to one side. And ‘morals’ frequently take on a very subjective quality when used in arguments.
