[su_right_ad]The donut chain eventually figured out that calling it that wasn’t a good idea.

The KKK, part of a nationwide promotion by Krispy Kreme for British children on a week-long holiday, immediately drew criticism for sharing the name as the Ku Klux Klan — that other KKK — known for burning crosses in people’s yards and lynching African Americans for nearly a century. According to a spokesman for the Hull branch, the sign had been approved by Krispy Kreme’s main office in the UK, so someone messed up big.

“Krispy Kreme apologises unreservedly for the inappropriate name of a customer promotion at one of our stores,” a spokeswoman for Krispy Kreme said to The Guardian. “This promotion was never intended to cause offence. All material has been withdrawn and an internal investigation is currently underway.”

TV Announcer: It’s the Krusty Komedy Klassic.
Krusty the Clown: Hey! Hey! It’s great to be back at the Apollo theater and…
[notices a big sign behind him]
Krusty the Clown: “KKK”? That’s not good.
[laughs nervously, then people from the audience start shouting, throwing food and glass bottles]
