When the police officers were in the hallway, a pit bull mix was let out of one of the apartments. The owner of the dog explained that a resident in the apartment opened the door and the dog ran out. The dog did not belong to those the officers were responding to in regards to the report of an assault.

According to police, the dog charged at them and the officer fired a shot at the dog.

The officer’s bullet grazed the dog and possibly ricocheted off a wall, then struck his sergeant in the right foot just below his big toe.
