[su_right_ad]A 78-year-old North Knoxville, TN resident called police because she had no food to eat.

Knoxville police officers say they responded to a call from the senior citizen, who seemed either confused or distressed, and found that she was starving and had no food in her house, reports WATE.

“They looked in her kitchen and the only thing they found, the only food she had in her entire house was a half-eaten jar of peanut butter,” said KPD spokesperson Darrell DeBusk. “She told the officers that she had been rationing the peanut butter since about February 16.”

The woman told cops she didn’t want to be a burden and had waited for a long time for assistance that never came.

Cops reportedly responded to her immediate need by buying her groceries at a local shop and ready-to-eat meals from Knoxville Area Rescue Mission. They were also able to secure help from the Knox County Community Action Committee and Knoxville Seniors to assign a case manager to the woman.

as a taxpayer .. I don’t mind pitching in to help people including kids eat if they need help. I’m also OK with you having the right to throw your little fit because you don’t like helping others.

States are in charge of their food stamp and welfare programs, not the federal government.
How exactly is it Obama’s fault…????? Or are you that illiterate about how our government works you just assumed.??? This is Haslam’s fault, put the blame where it belongs if you want to blame someone.

The current SNAP program began in 1964, when BHO was 3 years old. Of course the current President is responsible and not the TN Governor according to GOP logic.

(SNAP is a federally funded, individually state administered program that provides monthly benefits to low-income households to help pay for the cost of food. Of course you know this Mike, but I just wanted to clarify the federal govt/state govt dichotomy.)

I’m fairly certain the surfer dude story is a hoax. If you are not employed, a veteran or disabled and you have no dependants – you can only qualify for $90 a month for a maximum of ninety days. So if you wish to make a point, you need to find an actual example. Using a horrific story of an elderly woman in these circumstances to make a snarky political statement is hugely distasteful. Really, this is low even for you.

The CONservative mindset is, starve kids to punish the parents, don’t breed em if you feed em.. I can go on and on. I spend a lot time on right wing sites and the things they say makes decent people sick. They also wish to drug test welfare recipients just to belittle them, I’ve seen them say it.
They tell each other to watch what people put in their grocery carts and to watch how they pay for them. They’re truly insane lol wtf

    • William February 26th, 2015 at 1:04 pm

      Exactly.

      • theReaL*Lydia85 February 26th, 2015 at 1:14 pm

Corporate welfare is not a relevant issue to conservatives. Corporations/companies give people jobs so those companies are above accountability to them.
It’s the people that capitalism leaves behind is who the GOP pundits hate.

        • Bunya February 26th, 2015 at 1:28 pm

…and after conservative politicians leave the arena, they can secure lobbying jobs with those corporations to which they gave welfare. So it doesn’t matter what’s good for the people, it’s what’s good for the politician and corporations.

          • mea_mark February 26th, 2015 at 2:00 pm

American exceptionalism and oppression seem to go hand in hand anymore for the republicans. It really is a warning sign of a collapsing culture.

          • CB February 26th, 2015 at 2:57 pm

“It really is a warning sign of a collapsing culture.”

I agree, and it’s about time “Republican culture” collapsed.

Political parties are supposed to be about ideas, not about doing what everyone else is doing just because.

I’m not entirely sure how we got to the point where that isn’t immediately obvious…

          • TSZodiac February 27th, 2015 at 12:07 pm

Anyone who thinks that one party – or one person- has all the right answers is delusional. Political parties in the US should be outlawed. The two party system has failed the citizens of the United States

          • CB March 3rd, 2015 at 12:10 pm

“Anyone who thinks that one party – or one person- has all the right answers is delusional.”

            I agree!

…and anyone who thinks the Republican party isn’t delusional is delusional.

“Republican” no longer refers to someone with principles or convictions, it refers to someone who is mentally ill and interested only in attacking her fellow Americans.

Self-destruction is now the Republican party’s goal.

If you’re arguing for reform, okay, but I doubt that will happen. I think the GOP is going to go away and a new, more progressive party is going to take its place in opposition to Democrats.

          • TSZodiac March 3rd, 2015 at 12:51 pm

BOTH parties need to go away – the 2 party system is broken, and has only served to make slaves out of the vast majority of the American people. The Democrats are just as much to blame (if not more) than the Republicans. The Democrats, prior to January, have held the majority in each House of Congress for 62 of the last 82 years – and they have held the White House for 46 of those years – including the last 6. The Republican Party is no worse than the Democrats – two sides of the same coin. To identify yourself as being one or the other is tantamount to being branded like a cow or a sheep – doing, saying and promoting what the owners of your ear tag tells you to do, say or promote. There are ALOT of statements in your diatribe above (republicans are mentally ill, etc.) that tell me you may need help in removing YOUR ear tag. You have bought into the BS and are a slave to the Party. The only true mentally ill people in America are those that believe that their “team” is better than another “team”…..and we better start talking about good IDEAS really quick or we’re not going to have a Country to worry about.

          • CB March 3rd, 2015 at 6:06 pm

“The Republican Party is no worse than the Democrats”

            False.

Republicans want to enslave Women to bear children against their will, deny Gay folks equal treatment in marriage law, deny Latinos the right to be free of unlawful search and seizure and deny Black folks the right to vote.

            Democrats do not.

This could not be more abundantly clear from their respective voting records and platforms.

You are making a dangerous and dishonest false equivalence which only aids the least moral actors, in this case, the Republicans.

          • TSZodiac March 4th, 2015 at 10:33 pm

Gee – rhetoric much? Unless you haven’t noticed (which, having apparently not yet having had your ear tag removed you havent), all you’re doing here is allowing the propaganda being served up by your particular “team” to influence your thinking. You have been BRAINWASHED by those who mean to KEEP you enslaved. You have been brainwashed to believe that all you need do is make sure that Dems (your ” team”) are in power and everything will be put right….I remind you again that your “team” HAS been the party in power for the VAST majority of your life….holding majorities – and in some cases – SUPER majorities in each House of Congress for 62 of the last 82 years, and the White House for 46 of those years…..and yet they have not provided this Nirvana you expect them to provide. In fact, for the first 2 years of President Obama’s first term, your “team” held a Super Majority in Congress and was the one of the least effective in the History of the US in terms of legislation passed. They couldn’t even agree on a Budget because of all the infighting within your “team”. As for your allegations above….they’re all patently false, as follows:
            (1) this is straight from the ” war on women” playbook (Ear Tag !) And, last time that I checked, abortion on demand is the law of the land. Also the last time I checked, the Republican platform contains NOTHING calling for the repeal of Roe v Wade. So that allegation is false. Now, that being said, there have been calls for things like partial birth abortion and abortions in the last trimester to be banned. SURELY you can agree that in an “evolved” society – and with the readily available methods of birth control (pill, gel, condoms, implantable devices, morning after pill, etc) – we shouldn’t have to resort to murder in order to have sex without complications. Further, African American children die due to abortion in disproportionately high numbers (last year in the United States, 41% of abortions were performed on African American women). Were I more lime your buddy Vendicar the Janitor
(The guy that uses a scantily clad woman with her head cut off as an avatar…war on women, huh?) I would be calling you a racist right now. But, oh wait I forgot, only REPUBLICANS have the ability to be racist, right? At least that’s what the playbook says, right? Check your ear tag…killing babies doesn’t sound very “evolved” does it? Why is it that 20 children being killed in a school in Connecticut a tragedy (which it certainly is) but more than 365,000 children dying due to a an abortion NOT a tragedy?
            http://kff.org/womens-health-policy/state-indicator/abortions-by-race/
            (2) Are the voters of California all Republicans? No – its one of the most liberal states in the US, right? Then how is it possible that the people of California voted not once, but TWICE in the past 15 years to ban same sex marriage. Did you forget about Prop 8?? So it would appear that Republicans don’t have the exclusive on this particular issue, huh? So your second allegation is false. Personally, I feel the same on this issue as Dennis Miller (a Conservative Republican), I feel that gay people should have the right to be just as unhappy as the rest of us.
            (3) Have you ever been stopped by a police officer and asked for your ID? Is this unlawful search and seizure? Why does the color of a person’s skin matter? My father was born in Panama, and came here legally with his parents. He never understood why everyone else couldnt do the same. Question: Why is the Southern Border of the United States the ONLY international border IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD that isn’t allowed to be secure? So – the next time that you are stopped by a cop and you don’t feel that you should have been or don’t know why you’ve been stopped – I want you to tell that officer that you refuse to produce an ID because its unlawful search and seizure ..let me know how far you get with that. 3 down and the big one to go
            (4) please provide a SINGLE example of ANYONE preventing a group of African Americans from voting….before you puke out the Dem party line about ID laws, is it then racist to ask for an ID to cash a check, or get a job, or walk into the vast majority of government offices in the US? Is it racist of our Attorney General to require that you produce an ID to enter the Justice Department offices? Does Eric Holder hate black people? Allegation FALSE. The ONLY reason why this is an issue is again because of the let’s playbook – accuse others to cover what your “team” is doing. Let me give you an example….at the same time that your “team” was crying foul because of voter ID laws, they were running the 2010 Census out of the White House-for the first time in American history! Why would they do that? Couldn’t be because that’s the data that’s used to redraw voting districts, would it? Hmmmmm…I ask you now to THINK FOR YOURSELF, and stop drinking the “one party or the other” koolaid. Your “team” is no better than the other “team”. Another example – would it be okay with you if the United States sent arms to a Country that would put them in the hands of CHILDREN? I hope not, since a Democrat controlled Congress proposed legislation in early 2008 that would BAN that from ever happening…and the Republican President at that time agrred and signed that Act – the Child Soldier Prevention Act – into law. Newsflash: President Obama has signed FIVE waivers to that Law to allow him to send guns to Countries like Yemen, Sudan and the Congo…where American guns are now being used by CHILDREN …is THAT okay with you? You know, since he’s on YOUR team and all? Still think your team can do no wrong? Better drop the playbook, take out your ear tag, and start coming some REAL research about what your ” team”. Good luck to you!

      • theReaL*Lydia85 February 26th, 2015 at 2:20 pm

They are willing to spare no expense, (moral or financial) to shame and berate people in undesirable situations.

        • rg9rts February 26th, 2015 at 2:44 pm

Not when the cost start coming in….10 people….$1000 ….now you going to do it monthly?? One pf the reasons that Florida lost interest

besides finding only 2 people that failed. The gopee believes its own BS

      • Larry Schmitt February 26th, 2015 at 4:47 pm

And results in no benefit to anyone.

        • rg9rts February 27th, 2015 at 1:58 am

Especially when 99% are negative…like Florida discovered…there would be more positives testing the legislature

  6. Gindy51 February 26th, 2015 at 1:37 pm

I hate to say this, but this lady probably voted GOP her whole life.

    • allison1050 February 26th, 2015 at 7:18 pm

I wouldn’t bet on that 1 thanks anyway.

    • fancypants February 27th, 2015 at 12:04 am

10 bucks says they didn’t appreciate her vote If indeed she did vote for the gop her entire life

  7. Kim Connell February 26th, 2015 at 1:43 pm

Poverty does not have a political agenda, but those in power do, and that is why things like this happen everyday and it is shameful.

    • rg9rts February 26th, 2015 at 2:10 pm

In the richest nation this planet has ever seen….there is NO excuse for anyone to be hungry.

  8. nola878 February 26th, 2015 at 1:47 pm

I’m always quick to denounce cops when they do wrong.

I want to be just as quick to cheer when they do something right.

ps…yeah, I know it’s their job, but they did good.

    • rg9rts February 26th, 2015 at 2:10 pm

Buying food is not their job…being a compassionate human being sets them apart from the gopee . Think of the NYPD cop that bought shoes for a homeless man during christmas.

  9. Carla Akins February 26th, 2015 at 1:51 pm

Remember all those people that opined, who can’t afford to get a photo ID? I checked, TN is a voter ID state.

  10. rg9rts February 26th, 2015 at 2:07 pm

Does ANYONE remotely think that the gopee cares??? They are out to savage SNAP again while boosting agricultural welfare(subsidies). This is the reality they choose to ignore….its like being pro life till the fetus leaves the womb and becomes a parasite on society.. the instant of birth and hunger raises its ugly head.

  11. oldfart February 26th, 2015 at 2:11 pm

it appears her confusion or distress was probably caused by mistakenly thinking that she would be taken care of living in a red state.

    • Larry Schmitt February 26th, 2015 at 4:49 pm

She wouldn’t know red from blue. Hungry people just want something to eat.

  12. Jake February 26th, 2015 at 7:06 pm

Have we forgotten the republican crowds yelling “let them die” during the last round of presidential primary debates. How can you be even remotely surprised at this. THIS is republican policy working – nothing failing here.

  13. Fairypuff Phairypuf February 26th, 2015 at 7:42 pm

the censorship in here is depressing. I hope a atom bomb goes off.

    • Carla Akins February 26th, 2015 at 8:12 pm

What the hell are you talking about?

      • Obewon February 26th, 2015 at 8:32 pm

I’m not touching Fairypuff’s pending file. He can’t even post without whining ‘I should be banned from here by now.’

      • mea_mark February 26th, 2015 at 8:45 pm

I think he wants us to nuke him or maybe just ban him. That could just be me though.

        • Carla Akins February 26th, 2015 at 9:02 pm

None of his stuff has been deleted. The only current stuff in deleted is the racist dude. And some of his comments make no sense like they’re not meant for this story. Persecution complex much?

          • mea_mark February 27th, 2015 at 9:10 am

That gives me an idea. I think I might make all his comments go to pending requiring approval. Let’s see how much he freaks out when nothing gets posted immediately. He will really develop a persecution complex then.

    • mea_mark February 26th, 2015 at 8:47 pm

It’s not as depressing as the quality of your comments, now that is depressing.

  14. Gadea February 26th, 2015 at 7:47 pm

As long as the Koch Brothers get their billionaires tax cuts, they don’t care.

  15. Fairypuff Phairypuf February 26th, 2015 at 7:51 pm

I smell a greased palm Sunday payday. I wonder how much that phony Mrs. Neil’s publisher paid them off to hawk this rag of a book????

    • Fairypuff Phairypuf February 26th, 2015 at 8:00 pm

Only ordinary people are chosen?? This lady has a personal problem.

      • Carla Akins February 26th, 2015 at 8:10 pm

        What? what?

      • Carla Akins February 27th, 2015 at 6:48 am

Actually, none of your posts had been deleted you need to get with your doctor to check your meds. However. the three that are currently sitting in pending will be deleted and I am certain that you already know this, that type of comment is completely uncalled for and unnecessary.

        • Fairypuff Phairypuf February 28th, 2015 at 9:53 am

Don’t tell me they weren’t deleted they are gone. I have problems with my hands and eyes. I love to right but after a page or so my hands and eyes give out. I want to scream when my efforts are all for not. I’m sorry I had a chip on my shoulder but I’m a bear when I get up @ 4:00 a.m. and try to deal with this world.

          • Fairypuff Phairypuf February 28th, 2015 at 9:57 am

I ‘m not interested in taking your medicine. I can’t even swallow the self serving propaganda your handing me.

          • mea_mark February 28th, 2015 at 10:38 am

I don’t care if you have problems and a chip on your shoulder. If you’re an ass, you’re going to be moderated. Don’t be surprised if there is a delay on all your comments and if some never get posted.

  16. Red Mann February 26th, 2015 at 8:24 pm

It’s the RW way: “This here’s America, we don’t take care of our own.”

  17. Warman1138 February 26th, 2015 at 9:16 pm

If the GOP had their way there would no programs to help her. I hope she does well, nobody deserves neglect and starvation. And kudos for the public servants that helped her.

  18. frambley1 February 26th, 2015 at 10:56 pm

They bought her groceries, now she has no incentive to work. I am wondering why she is so coddled. Why doesn’t she just get off her lazy butt and start gutting companies and selling off their assets for food money. Can’t she just borrow money from her parents to start a business?

    • Emily February 27th, 2015 at 5:17 am

omg this dumb young sheltered conservative ^ ask her parents? shes 78. “no incentive to work” lol. Good look getting hired at 78 when ur that age. IDIOT.

      • Shades February 27th, 2015 at 7:46 am

Settle down Emily I’m pretty sure that was snark.

  19. craig7120 February 26th, 2015 at 11:32 pm

There’s not many stories that have the ability to punch me in the gut, thanks Alan.
    This one hurt.
Someone said, society is judged by how it treats their elderly and young.
Let’s see, young are sent to war and elderly are made to feel a burden.

Well done America, now that’s exceptional

  20. fancypants February 26th, 2015 at 11:57 pm

and yet we or should I say our government is more worried about what’s happening in the middle east ( still no threat to the usa ) Maybe if she was a veteran ? we wouldn’t be reading about this.
    PATHETIC !!

  21. Snick1946 February 27th, 2015 at 10:50 am

Nice that she got an outpouring of help from those nice folks. Wonder how many of them still vote Republican?

  22. TSZodiac March 5th, 2015 at 10:36 am

Well, I suppose that this is a first step – getting someone who identifies themselves as a leftist to come as far as you have, I’ll take it – and I couldn’t agree more about the money portion of your post, and I would add completely outlawing ALL foreign money and Corporate contributions. The problem is that the two teams that dominate the political landscape in the US are addicted to the almighty dollar, and BOTH peddle influence and favors for the money, and neither party really cares where it comes from. There is little or no chance of a strong third party getting in the game, because BOTH sides AND the media will attack that party to suppress it. Witness the debacle of the Tea Party – which gets slammed by both parties. The only REAL shot at changing things permanently would be for a group of people – like maybe Colin Powell and Joe Lieberman – to step up and form a new third party. But even then, they would have to have the backing of a significant number of Billionaires who would be willing to bankroll the new party (under the current pay to play system) before gaining enough enough seats in Congress so that they could effect meaningful change. I choose Colin Powell and Joe Lieberman because then the new party could not be attacked as being racist, anti-Semitic, too Conservative, too Liberal, etc…what do you think? Maybe you and I could get the ball rolling!
