[su_right_ad]FreakOutNation:

A North Idaho Republican senator is objecting to allowing a Hindu prayer as the opening invocation for the Idaho Senate on Tuesday morning, and says he’ll walk out because they worship cows.

Sen. Steve Vick, R-Dalton Gardens, said, “They have a caste system. They worship cows.”

…According to the Spokesman-Review, Vick said he acknowledged the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution for any kind of prayer, but said he thinks the Hindu one shouldn’t be allowed to open the Senate, as the United States was “built on the Judeo-Christian not only religion but work ethic, and I don’t want to see that undermined.”

“I’m very supportive of the way this country was built, and I don’t want us to move away from it,” Vick said out loud.

So, in support of this country, he is going to pick and choose which religions (Right-wing Christianity only) apply to the First Amendment.

We’ve had Native Americans in congress and at opening invocations in Washington and I’d bet good money that they’ve Native Americans do it in Idaho too. Would he walk out on them as well? They may not “worship cows” (that’s a whole other can of stupid) but they do recognize animal spirits. Also, could someone explain to me what the Judeo-christian work ethic is? Special prayers before certain tasks? Sounds like a meaningless cliche to me but useful to imply that other religions just aren’t equal.

    • bluejayray March 4th, 2015 at 2:45 pm

They say “judeo christian”, but they probably wouldn’t allow any jewish prayers either. Those first amendments rights are only for christians. Just ask them…

    At least cows are real.

First of all, they don’t worship cows. Second, even if they did, at least cows exist.

I don’t support ANY prayers at public-funded events, period. They are unconstitutional. This country was NOT built on christianity. It was built in spite of it. This is not now, was not ever, and will never be a christian nation.

    • fahvel March 5th, 2015 at 5:30 am

      “in spite of” is brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • bluejayray March 6th, 2015 at 12:44 pm

Thank you–I really believe that we’re still here in spite of them as well. I’ve never seen it so bad and I’ve been here awhile now.

I think most people of any faith believe theirs to be the best, at least for them. When people come across something they get a lot from, and think is really beneficial, they tend to want to share that with others. For them, it works better than other things so they naturally feel they have found the best, whether it is a set of spiritual beliefs, political ideology or diet plan.
On the Right one finds Mormons, Catholics and Baptists, to name a few, of their members who are Christians and there are significant differences between all of them. It is not uncommon for people to change denominations, too.

Those things said, it is one thing to have differing views, but something else to attack someone else for being different. This is to be expected when the differences are, say, political, where the nature of the game is debate, but not in a case such as this.

Well then why do the republicans have the ability to pray in government offices? They pray to green backs and we all know money is the root of all evil.

Clad in a flowing orange robe, Zed said afterward that most of Idaho’s state senators welcomed him. “They came out and shook my hand – some of them hugged me. It was good,” he said, adding, “There are multiple viewpoints. … That is what makes the country great, you know?” http://www.spokesman.com/stories/2015/mar/03/seven-idaho-senators-leave-during-hindu-prayer/

  14. burqa March 4th, 2015 at 7:26 pm

I have heard invocations at various ceremonies and public events by people of many faiths. Nearly all the time they are fairly generic and I can’t recall ever hearing anyone use it to try to impose their faith or beliefs on others.
This guy needs to hang out with some Hindus and get over the need for such ridiculous posturing.

  17. OldLefty March 5th, 2015 at 6:31 am

The cow is simply a protected animal among Hindus because it is considered a gentle spirit that pulls the plough for and gives dairy products.

The worship cows thing is false.

Since these guys won in an off year, albeit, a census year election,(redistricting year), they have become more and more proud of displaying their ignorance to a tiny niche audience.
