According to an Oklahoma GOP lawmaker, gays don’t have a right to be served in public places of the proprietors of certain establishments disagree with their lifestyle. State Senator Joseph Silk (R) is sponsoring the “Oklahoma Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 2015,” which is designed to shield businesses from lawsuits for discriminating against customers who offend…

“And I say that sensitively, because I have homosexual friends.” I bet you do. I bet you have a wide stance as well.

    • Larry Schmitt March 6th, 2015 at 9:30 pm

The most bigoted ones always say the “some of my best friends are (fill in the blank)” line. They’re no fooling anyone.

Actors you watch on sitcoms are not your ‘friends.’

He’s actively trying to bring them back.

  6. Larry Schmitt March 6th, 2015 at 9:29 pm

At one time people thought the same way about blacks. Then a little thing called the Civil Rights Act came along. I believe that protects everyone from discrimination in public places. Without it, someone who didn’t like white bigoted dumba$$es could keep you out of his restaurant, “Mr.” Silk. As usual, the republicans know nothing about history.

    • tiredoftea March 6th, 2015 at 11:11 pm

You have to respect him a little bit. He flat out unequivocally proves himself to be an asshole with a heart full of hate. Pretty ballsy of him to say that without the benefit of the hood or dunce cap to obscure himself.

The lady in the picture seated at the counter whose face you see recently died. The photo was used in her obituary in the Washington Post.

        Thank you for sharing that.

I’m embarrassed to not recall her name. At home I saved that section of the newspaper because the photo moved me.

  8. nola878 March 6th, 2015 at 9:59 pm

I don’t suffer idiot assholes very well. It’s a sincerely held religious belief. Can I refuse service to Joseph Silk?

  9. labman57 March 6th, 2015 at 10:31 pm

If not for the federal Civil Rights Acts of the 1960’s, these same socially-regressive legislators would likely still be defending the right of racist businesses to exclude African Americans from their establishments.

    • whatthe46 March 6th, 2015 at 10:58 pm

      and ain’t that a bitch?!

    • tiredoftea March 6th, 2015 at 11:09 pm

What do you think this is about? The right doesn’t accept it! Never has! They are still re-litigating the Civil War.

I’m from the “Northern Bible Belt” where, even if we disagree with someone, we believe Jesus would have us treat them decently.

Hopefully, this saved me from hurting any of my gay friends before I saw the light on this issue.

        • tiredoftea March 7th, 2015 at 2:35 pm

    • tiredoftea March 6th, 2015 at 11:07 pm

In short, it’s the latest in the southern fight for nullification of federal laws. You know, they lost this battle in 1864.

      • burqa March 7th, 2015 at 12:32 am

Oklahoma is not in the South.

        • tiredoftea March 7th, 2015 at 1:28 am

Tell that to the people there who are fighting to keep the ACA.

          • whatthe46 March 7th, 2015 at 2:00 am

Stick around and you’ll soon discover my opinion on gay rights.

          • burqa March 7th, 2015 at 2:53 am

That does not change geography or inform those who are unaware of what states are considered the South, sorry.

I am sure there are anti-gay bigots in North dakota and others there who oppose the ACA, but that does not mean North Dakota is located in the South.

        • bpollen March 7th, 2015 at 2:37 am

          It’s way south of me…

        • Ronald L March 7th, 2015 at 10:54 am

          >> Oklahoma is not in the South.

I’ve lived in Oklahoma. It is very southern in culture.

Traditionally, Oklahoma has been a blend of mid-west and southern culture but with the national rise of Southern conservative politics and religion, Oklahoma can now “out-South” the south.

          • burqa March 7th, 2015 at 12:42 pm

You’re confusing rural culture with Southern culture.
When living in the Haute Garonne in France, I got to know farmers with whom I was delighted to find a lot in common with. That was rural culture and not Southern culture which is far more complex, so much so that I like to say it’s like an endless onion. Just when we think we’ve got it figured out we find layers beneath to be explored with accompanying mysteries to be solved. We spend a lifetime trying to get to the bottom of it but never do.
I’m a 13th generation purebred Southerner and know of what I speak. Ever meet a 13th generation Oklahoman? Caucasian, that is?
They got bougainvillea and Spanish moss in Oklahoma?

What unique cuisine recognized around the globe ever came out of Oklahoma?

Sorry, Oklahoma is not located in the South and has a Midwestern culture. Nothing wrong with that, don’t get me wrong. I’m not placing any value judgments, just saying they are different. Lotta fine people in Oklahoma.

      • burqa March 7th, 2015 at 12:54 pm

Gotta include New York in that one. At the time quite a few of them, including either the governor or mayor of NYC wanted to secede and it was a narrow thing they didn’t.
In the South, those who favored secession were in the minority for 50 years or so until the Whigs fell apart, became divided and a Tea Party-type group popped up on the other side, took advantage of it and then all hell broke loose.

    • Suzanne McFly March 7th, 2015 at 10:31 am

Well he should get some credit for being so sensitive because he does have gay friends (if he really did, I bet he doesn’t any more).

  12. Chinese Democracy March 6th, 2015 at 11:29 pm

  14. burqa March 7th, 2015 at 12:30 am

It’s a sad day when you have to argue with someone over whether gays should be allowed to eat in public restaurants.

    It seems kinda obvious, y’know?

  15. granpa.usthai March 7th, 2015 at 1:31 am

Speaking as one who is fully qualified by the Scriptures to be a PROPHET OF GOD, I’ll say that’s OK.
Deeply ‘religious’ people are the only ones Jesus looked upon with anger anyway.
If Jesus wouldn’t eat there, why should someone who is gay?
or anyone else who is not ‘deeply religious’?

    • whatthe46 March 7th, 2015 at 1:40 am

how in the world would anyone know, unless it was extremely obvious, that the person not expressing their sexuality, wasn’t gay or lesbian, in the booth near them anyway. there are people of the opposite sex that dine together and they are both gay. like heterosexuals (as they would appear to be) dine together, may be friends that are actually gay, but just having a meal. and these idiots believe they are a straight couple when in fact they are not. dummies!

  16. rg9rts March 7th, 2015 at 2:13 am

I wouldn’t serve that idiot in my establishment

    • fahvel March 7th, 2015 at 4:22 am

I might – his last meal maybe. “cause it wouldn’t taste too good.

  17. Jack E Raynbeau March 7th, 2015 at 2:25 am

    Yeah dude, you be bad.

  18. Boehner-Monkey March 7th, 2015 at 2:39 am

Hey Congressman homie, didn’t Jesus dine with Publicans and sinners? What makes you more special than Jesus? Same Republican hypocritical bullshit as usual. The main reason I switched to Democrat. Have not regretted it since.

  19. fahvel March 7th, 2015 at 4:21 am

how the hell does a mind so severely infected by hate become a public figure? This is the stiff that horror movies should be made about, not martians chasing tom cruise and his family.

    • Suzanne McFly March 7th, 2015 at 10:29 am

Says a lot about his constituents IMO.

  20. Warman1138 March 7th, 2015 at 4:49 am

Another attempt to use religion as a tool of seclusion and discrimination, the GOP keeps up the tradition magnificently.

    • burqa March 7th, 2015 at 5:30 am

Fortunately, there are plenty of other people, motivated to various degrees by their faith to stand up for the victims of bigotry and hatred. These believers have repeatedly prevailed throughout our history and our nation has improved as more people gained more rights as we sail a course toward a time when we will all have equal rights.
That day is coming and nothing will stop it.

  21. jybarz March 7th, 2015 at 6:27 am

What a stupid mongrel! Hope he gets similar or worse treatment they way he treats fellow human beings.

  22. Mainah March 7th, 2015 at 7:59 am

The right of freedom of religion does not equal the right to discriminate. Hello? And just how would one go about refusing service to homosexuals? Ask them before seating? “How many in your party sir and are any of you gay ” yeah that’ll fly.

  23. Suzanne McFly March 7th, 2015 at 10:39 am

This dipshit offends my common sense, he should be removed from office. When someone shows they have a prejudice against a segment of the population they have been chosen to represent, that is simply proof that he can not do his job judiciously and without bias therefore he needs to go.

    • burqa March 7th, 2015 at 7:05 pm

They like picking on very small minorities like that…

  24. Bunya March 7th, 2015 at 3:24 pm

“And I say that sensitively, because I have homosexual friends.”

Sure, sure. And you don’t hate gays. You just “disapprove of their lifestyle”. Y’know, “love the sinner, hate the sin” kind of thing. The kind of things Jesus and Muhammed taught, right? I was taught that “golden rule” in grade school and believed it – until I discovered it’s a type of double speak fine people like you use to mask your bigotry and come off smelling like a decent person in public.

Bill Maher had a point when he said people like you aren’t followers of Christ. You’re merely fans.

  25. Maxx44 March 7th, 2015 at 5:37 pm

The mantra of bigots: “I say that sensitevely because I have friends who are _________________.”

  26. Angelo_Frank March 7th, 2015 at 7:46 pm

Then I say get out of business.

  27. Kick Frenzy March 7th, 2015 at 8:23 pm

Dear Sen. Silk, try starting at the beginning of the constitutional amendments:

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”

  28. allison1050 March 7th, 2015 at 8:44 pm

What did it (Silk) do before he became a state senator? If he has a wife my vote is to divorce him ASAP!

  29. JMax March 7th, 2015 at 9:21 pm

What the hell is “their lifestyle” that it is different from most heterosexual couples?

  30. r_dale March 8th, 2015 at 1:18 pm
