Passing out Bibles in class is not a good idea in a public school.

While the national humanist group threatening to sue got word from one concerned parent, most of the folks in Duncan are overwhelmingly in support of the teacher in question.

Opponents to the act say that teacher’s actions were unconstitutional since it happened at a public elementary school.

According to an eight-page letter from the Appignani Humanist Legal Center attorney, a third grade teacher at Woodrow Wilson Elementary told her class “she had the holy Bible and asked if anyone would like one.” After seeing his classmates all get one, the group’s attorney says “one child felt peer-pressured and coerced to do the same.”

…Legal experts say the existence of a Bible at school doesn’t matter. The problem lies in the fact that the teacher was handing them out.

“It would be the same violation if the teacher gave out a Koran, a Talmud, it’s all about who the players are in that equation,” Henderson said.

A lot of people would agree with you that the bible teaches bigotry. This is uncharacteristically rational. You MUST be making an attempt at sarcasm.

3rd grade = 8-9 year olds. A bit young for sexual perversions/cannibalism of small children and the ABOMINATION of wearing MIXED FIBERS, I think.

don’t see why they can’t hand out free Hustler mags. I mean, some of the sexual stuff in the OT gets really out there. Lot’s daughters for two, or the sisters of Cain and Able – or what had to have been going on in the ark for 40 nights plus.

any less revealing a book than some of dicken’s darkness or any different than any history written by winners and survivors? You folks are getting carried away – the bible or koran or any other ancient poetry has a place in literature classes – third grade? the lady is a dope.

The fact that the teacher and others don’t see what is wrong with this is the real problem.

Well, I certainly hope the teacher removed the pages containing the Songs of Solomon. Better they learn about infanticide, bigotry and war than filthy, dirty sex.
