Small surveillance plans over Baltimore are raising concerns among residents.

Discovery of the flights — which involved at least two airplanes and the assistance of the FBI — has prompted the American Civil Liberties Union to demand answers about the legal authority for the operations and the reach of the technology used. Planes armed with the latest surveillance systems can monitor larger areas than police helicopters and stay overhead longer, raising novel civil liberties issues that have so far gotten little scrutiny from courts.

Civil libertarians have particular concern about surveillance technology that can quietly gather images across dozens of city blocks — in some cases even square miles at a time — inevitably capturing the movements of people under no suspicion of criminal activity into a government dragnet. The ACLU plans to file information requests with federal agencies on Wednesday, officials said.

“A lot of these technologies sweep very, very broadly, and, at a minimum, the public should have a right to know what’s going on,” said Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst at the ACLU specializing in privacy and technology issues.

40 responses to Surveillance Planes Over Baltimore

What’s the problem? With 20% of Baltimore’s workforce working for the government, it has a right to keep tabs on their employees in any way they see fit and surveillance drones are a cost effective way to di it.

One could make the same claim about the defense contractors and bailed out Wall Street (with THEIR cocaine), and ALL the corporate welfare queens.

As for; “What, are you libs upset at a big intrusive government now?”

Always HAVE been when it comes to personal freedom and liberty.

You cons are the ones who favor big intrusive government for EVERYONE with whom you disagree, especially when it comes to the bedroom and the womb.

      • John Tarter May 6th, 2015 at 12:34 pm

Let’s see, you libs don’t want intrusiveness in the bedroom or womb, but you want the government to pay for every woman’s contraception and abortion.

        • OldLefty May 6th, 2015 at 12:39 pm

          ______
No, we want it to be included in the policies that they pay for the same as viagra is.
Abortion has never been included, (but it is 100% paid for by the government of Israel).

          • John Tarter May 6th, 2015 at 12:47 pm

It’s what you want, government funded abortion to the max.

          • OldLefty May 6th, 2015 at 12:57 pm

            Who said that?
I could make the claim that what YOU want is, government closing private clinics so that women will be dying to the max while making women’s organ property of the state.

I don’t the government getting between women and their doctors.

          • arc99 May 6th, 2015 at 1:03 pm

and what you want is women dying in back alley abortions. you want to sling hyperbole?

            bring it, right winger….

Says the man who wants to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on war, but says we cannot afford a fraction of that amount to help people right here at home to feed and house their families.

        • tracey marie May 6th, 2015 at 1:15 pm

who said pay for either of those things, the only people saying such things are the tea babbler liars. Taxes are legal and needed for a civilized society, HC is needed by everyone,no one is taking your guns.

      • John Tarter May 6th, 2015 at 12:48 pm

I see, still having trouble dealing with the truth? You wanted big government, now you have it! So stop complaining.

        • tracey marie May 6th, 2015 at 1:13 pm

because this sort of thing only happened in the last few years.

        • William May 6th, 2015 at 1:32 pm

I’m not complaining. I have trouble dealing with the notion that NASA is busy testing drones over Baltimore. I did some research (scroll up). It’s what freedom loving Americans do. We question things.
You lack the mental tools and temperament to question stories and reason for yourself.

    A figment of someones imagination?
I have no doubt that aerial surveillance is going on, be it helicopters or even unmanned drones…
That image looks like something out of the mind of Louie Ghomert and Alex Jones.

    • Pilotshark May 6th, 2015 at 10:54 am

looks as if it is a tilt wing drone.
or like you said a made up model.

      • StoneyCurtisll May 6th, 2015 at 11:01 am

You might be right, just a drone…

I was thinking of the V-22 Osprey, twin engine VTOL aircraft..

With only twin engines, it has a bad record of falling out of the sky..

Looks like some crazy Soviet era or secret Nazi weapon…

    • robert May 6th, 2015 at 11:10 am

i dont know but its far from being stealth

    • William May 6th, 2015 at 11:26 am

I have my doubts. A clearer image indicates a NASA drone. Lots of tabloid links if you drop this image in TINEYE

Further investigation does indicate the photo to be of a NASA VTOL drone.

      That said.

      I call Bullshit.

Technology has come a long way for me, I remember flying my Cox B engine Stuka around in a circle with a hand held/fishing line attachment..(early 70’s)
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5C7ePI-ma4
And we didn’t have Go-Pro cameras to attach to them…
They were about 25-30 dollar toys, and most of them never flew after the first attempt at flight and landing…

        • Pilotshark May 6th, 2015 at 1:26 pm

Awww those early flying attempts :^) i myself have may more then my fair share of one time landings, had a Stuka myself, along with a F4U, P-47, but build an Lil Satan, nice thing had mutable engines to use 🙂

surveillance is bad – so why oh why is Alan asking for me to sign up for get the latest from alan and the lib team every time I move around the site which I have been visiting for years without this junk? It’s insulting and if it keeps up I’ll have to say bye bye to you all ’cause I don’t like this badgering in the least.
