Huckabee: Better To Have A Gun You Don’t Know How To Use Than No Gun At All

ReallyAt a campaign stop at an Iowa gun range yesterday, Mike Huckabee dismissed concerns about lax state requirements for gun permits, saying he wasn’t very worried about a permit-holder “not being as trained as they could be” because “a good guy armed is still better than a good guy unarmed.”
A reporter attending the event at Crossroads Shooting Sports in Johnston, Iowa, asked Huckabee to comment on laws in Iowa that make it “relatively easy to get your permit to carry” without “actual hands-on training.”
“You know, I leave that to the states,” Huckabee said. “[I have] less worry about someone not being as trained as they could be, because I think ultimately a citizen who is going to arm themselves is going to want to avail themselves of significant training to become proficient. I mean, that just makes sense, for their own sake. But if they don’t, a good guy armed is still better than a good guy unarmed.”

That way when they accidentally shoot themselves, they will die right away, instead of lingering in the hospital, running up huge medical bills that we all have to pay because they don’t have insurance.

I don’t care about the people who are so careless they shoot themselves with their own gun but that’s also how kids get their little hands on gun and how all of those “just cleaning the gun” injuries and deaths occur….except for the ones that were outright murder and cleaning provided a good excuse.

When I was in the Army a guy cleaning his rifle on the first floor shot a hole through the bunk next to mine on the second floor. And he was well trained in the use of a gun. Huck sucks!

That’s a really frightening comment of his. When I moved to Virginia, I bought a gun. I hadn’t had one for years. Pistol-Packing who used to comment here a lot and even did a post or two, sent me some safety stuff in the mail. In addition, he stressed how important training was. The dude is a Conservative so I don’t even know what Huck is.

I’m pretty conservative, but I don’t have any objection to mandatory gun training. I’ve never owned a gun. I shot them once at a rifle range. If I ever buy one, I will certainly get training. I think Reps would be smart to support mandatory training. I don’t know anyone who would object to that. The one case I’m uncertain about is a woman who is being threatened by her spouse or ex. If she fears for her life, do we want to force her to wait until she completes training before allowing her to carry a pistol?

Training doesn’t really take that long. I held my first shotgun after I was stalked. I was terrorized, the guy would break in several times per week and end up stealing my underwear. The cops were no help. I went target shooting and learned how to use it properly, then I just sat there one night waiting for him with the gun in my hands, aimed at the door.
He never came back after that probably because he had been watching me for so long that he knew I had a gun and I wasn’t afraid to use it.

in related news I just read the the boy scouts have banned the use of water guns. so on one hand we are so uptight about guns that we won’t let kids even use a water gun, but it’s ok for everyone to have a real gun, regardless of whether they know how to use it or not. ok, makes perfect sense to me

A good guy armed without proper training is worse than useless and usually shoots the wrong person or gets shot himself. And since guns are so easy to get, it’s quite likely most of the guns in any area will be held by the bad guys.
