Attorney General Loretta Lynch says it’s imperative we renew the Patriot Act.

Lynch spoke with CBS’ Nora O’Donnell in her first televised interview as attorney general, and reacted to various members of Congress this week taking a stand against bulk collection, including filibuster leaderRand Paul.

Lynch said people would be more accepting if they had a better understanding of “what we do with that data.” And if the provision expires, she said, “we lose important eyes on people who have made it clear that their mission is to harm American people here and abroad.”

She even went so far as to say not extending that provision means “we run the risk of essentially being less safe.”

No patriot act convictions since it was passed

lynch must be talking about the future ?

  2. AnthonyLook May 23rd, 2015 at 1:21 am

    We will take our chances.

  3. greenfloyd May 23rd, 2015 at 2:31 am

Maybe there needs to be some clarification in terms of why the new AG likes the PA and phone meta-data so much? The claim we’d be “less safe” if govt didn’t collect this data is right out of ‘1984’ Yikes!

There’s probably a legitimate need for some electronic surveillance in specific cases and authorized by a judge. However, it has grown into a monster of considerable, yet unknown, proportions, expense and effectiveness. Is it really worth it? Sorry, that’s “top secret.”

And what’s the big deal about being mistaken as a court-reporter?

    • lynchie May 23rd, 2015 at 10:42 am

Good way to transfer wealth to the 1%. that is all it is. They can’t stop a drone or a home made helicopter from landing near the white house so this is all bullshit/.

      • greenfloyd May 23rd, 2015 at 11:13 pm

That’s an interesting conclusion. Please elaborate.

  4. jasperjava May 23rd, 2015 at 2:56 am

It had been said that those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither. It’s disappointing to hear Lynch talk that way.

  5. Carla Akins May 23rd, 2015 at 7:30 am

I don’t know if I believe that, but I am certain the government regardless of administration will continue to spy on us as they always have, legally or illegally. I’d like to be outraged, I’m just not sure I care so much anymore. If they would step up and do something about the economy, immigration, Wall Street, Veterans benefits, the education system, student loans, etc….I just wouldn’t care.

  6. Buford2k11 May 23rd, 2015 at 8:04 am

I am starting to not like this Loretta person….her stance on pot should have raised the red flags…PBO has disappointed once again…

    • lynchie May 23rd, 2015 at 10:40 am

She plays the fear card again. If someone wants to sneak into the states it is not all that hard, millions have already done it. If you want to kill some americans blow up at a shopping mall, a ball game, whatever. We don’t need to spy on Americans and be less safe when we have a government that has been at war literally for the last 50 years in one place or another and by the way not won any of the conflicts.

    • johnnybizzoy May 23rd, 2015 at 11:13 am

HEY! if you pillow biters want gay marriage and welfare, you’ll do what you’re told and keep voting for the democrat party.

      • Buford2k11 May 23rd, 2015 at 11:30 am

Hmm…pillow biter? you be in the closet? what are you trying to hide? Bigotry and Hate belongs to you…and you will fade from history like the rest of the insane and cowards of the republican party….

        • johnnybizzoy May 23rd, 2015 at 11:59 am

Hey, listen – I MIGHT legalize gay marriage. but you know what would really help me get to that point? allowing me to execute American citizens, any time I want, without charging them with a crime, or producing any evidence that they are a threat. Deal? we’re talking full on gay marriage here, what’s it gonna be sugar tits?

          • William May 23rd, 2015 at 12:15 pm

Hey, listen – I MIGHT legalize gay marriage
            Well guess what?
The legalization of gay marriage isn’t your call.
Jeeez, you’re not even an effective troll.

          • johnnybizzoy May 23rd, 2015 at 5:03 pm

People banty the word troll around quite a bit, usually they are the ones adhering to the definition. allow me to explain this nice and slow so that you can understand my point. The two major parties dangle “social issues” in front of the mass throngs of low-information voters, so as to keep them paying attention to these meaningless, trivial issues, so that nobody has time or attention or educational attainment to focus on, understand, or appreciate the truly important issues in governance. Obama and the democrats will re-sign the Patriot Act, the NDAA, and will continue to stoke the fires of war across the middle east. But their supporters will look away from all of that, and focus on gay marriage and legalization of pot (two things I support, btw). I’m not criticizing your view on social policies, which I agree with by in large. I am criticizing your blind loyalty to a party and to a candidate who are EXACTLY THE SAME AS REPUBLICANS in all the ways that actually matter to the future of this nation.

          • bpollen May 23rd, 2015 at 6:54 pm

            “low-information voters”

You show your true colors right there. As if you are the only person in the world who has the TRUTH! (Alex Jones supplied of course.)

          • johnnybizzoy May 24th, 2015 at 1:08 am

do you feel the majority of Americans are low-information voters or not? Be honest.

          • whatthe46 May 24th, 2015 at 1:35 am

the repuking party. yes they are low information voters. throw out a lie and they will eat it up. PERIOD!!!

          • bpollen May 24th, 2015 at 1:50 am

Do you feel that people who don’t agree with you are “low-information voters” or not? Be honest.

          • johnnybizzoy May 24th, 2015 at 2:20 am

Of course not. I prefer to have in-depth discussions with people who don’t necessarily agree with me about things – it is the best way to learn something new, and/or to teach something new.

          • bpollen May 24th, 2015 at 6:07 pm

            “low-information voters”
            “democrat party”

You are virtually dripping with Fox News propaganda, yet you CLAIM you want in-depth discussion. It simply is not credible.

          • johnnybizzoy May 25th, 2015 at 8:11 pm

Okay, fine. You’re having fun playing internet crossfire. Some of the respondents on this comments thread have shown themselves to be thoughtful and willing to share information. Others haven’t. You haven’t. I won’t lose sleep over it.

          • bpollen May 25th, 2015 at 9:09 pm

Ye shall be known by thy drivel.

          • johnnybizzoy May 26th, 2015 at 2:14 am

            lol, okay kid

          • William May 24th, 2015 at 8:12 am

So far you’ve furnished no facts, no figures no credible link to anything that support your contentions. Not only are you a failed troll, but you are also a mindless troll who simply repeats right wing radio talking points. Failed troll who cannot even form his own opinions.
            How sad is that?

          • Buford2k11 May 23rd, 2015 at 12:19 pm

Fear can be overcome…with knowledge and compassion…so, are you personally being threatened by someone? Maybe a more masculine Sugar Tits?

          • robert May 23rd, 2015 at 1:33 pm

do us a favor Grab your gun and go fight those ISIL members over there before they get here, Deal ?

          • johnnybizzoy May 23rd, 2015 at 11:19 pm

Why would I go fight ISIS? All I need to do is listen to the Obama administration, when they tell me that I only need to let them root through my phone records and emails – and then I will be safe. Why would I go fight ISIS? They were created, funded, trained and armed by my own government, in tandem with my government’s major allies in the region, Turkey, Qatar, Jordan, and others. Why would I go fight ISIS? I don’t want my tax dollars, and my children’s future leveraged so that the global military contractors can stay in business while innocent children are driven screaming from their homes by militias that my government armed under the table. Why would I go fight ISIS? Because Obama and your television told you that was a good idea? You should think about the stuff that slick politicians like Obama and Hillary and their corporate sock puppets on tv tell you about the would.

          • robert May 24th, 2015 at 2:11 pm

just remember this johnny, ISIL was not heard of until Saddam Husein was hung. I cant say the long arm of our laws did its best work that month ? as a matter of fact it did more favors for iran then you will ever know.

please dont tell me about obama and hillary until you justify what the gwb administration did Your confusing people here who really know the truth

          • johnnybizzoy May 25th, 2015 at 8:10 pm

Why should I have to justify what the GWB administration did? I didn’t vote for him, I didn’t support him, and I criticized just about every one of his policies. Are Hillary supporters laboring under the misconception that a vote for Hillary is a vote against GWB? Do you have any idea how deluded that is? Btw, how did Hillary vote on the authorization to go to war with Iraq?

          • robert May 25th, 2015 at 8:18 pm

LOL hillary wasn’t in office when we went to war Perhaps she was yelling at the tv while gwb was imposing executive orders to send in our rookie soldiers first ( national guard ) instead of those who were war ready.

your smart by distancing yourself from anything gwb did I’ll give you that

          • johnnybizzoy May 26th, 2015 at 2:04 am

As I take it you are a Hillary supporter then you have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt what I assume to be true of the great majority of Hillary supporters: You don’t actually know squat about Hillary Clinton. Let me tell you something you probably should know about Hillary: She was a US Senator for 8 years. She won her election in 2000, the same year as GWB, and she VOTED TO GIVE HIM THE AUTHORIZATION TO ATTACK IRAQ AFTER 9/11. This was one of the key reasons why the Democratic Party chose an unknown and untested college professor over her – because she is a war-monger with no moral compass, just like GWB, and just like her husband. These people do not care about YOU or ME, they do not care about the American people. They care about their own egos, and about POWER, and that is all.

          • robert May 26th, 2015 at 3:49 pm

whats your point ? obama voted against the invasion of iraq while as a senator in illinois and all he gets is the blame because it wasnt a success And what does gwb get ??? All the praise he most certainly does not deserve. Try and figure that one out ! I think your dead wrong about bill clinton since he didnt play this game with the middle east and i also remember paying .99 per gallon for unleaded gas while he was in office. Say what you want about hillary but don’t make a huge mistake by comparing her politics with bill’s

          • johnnybizzoy May 28th, 2015 at 1:38 am

my point is that most Hillary supporters have no idea who she is or what she has done. They support her due to the “cult of personality” that has been drilled into them by propaganda. People naturally seek “in-groups” and a sense of identity. In this world of constant change, high tech distractions, and tenuous connections to our own friends and family…political “self-identification” is used against the people by the two major parties (and other movements) to foster attitudes of un-questioning loyalty and blind allegiance to the sound byte of the moment. “we have never been at war with east Eurasia///we have ALWAYS been at war with east Eurasia.” It’s all the same to people who no longer think critically or have a solid sense of who they are. People who feel an emotional connection to a political party are dangerously out of touch with reality

          • robert May 28th, 2015 at 3:04 am

in other words jeb bush should find another profession

            i totally agree

      • OldLefty May 23rd, 2015 at 12:05 pm

        What’s the “democrat party”?

Cause NOBODY loves that welfare more than Republicans.

        • johnnybizzoy May 23rd, 2015 at 5:00 pm

idk, what is the democrat party? No seriously, what is it? A loose association of disparate special interests with no coherent vision for the future? A motley crew of drones who vote based on identity politics? That’s a good question, what is it?

          • OldLefty May 23rd, 2015 at 5:11 pm

That’s what many say about the Republican Party , while many others say it is a tight association of corporate welfare queens controlling a “crew of drones who vote based on identity politics.”

That’s why David Frum said, “Republicans have been Fleeced, Exploited And Lied To’ by a Conservative Entertainment Complex”

Some sat the Democratic Party is “A loose association of disparate special interests”, like Will Rogers.

I don’t know anything about a “democrat party”.

          • johnnybizzoy May 24th, 2015 at 1:04 am

I just think it is insane that anyone who has been alive for a while and been paying attention for a while would continually allow themselves to be fooled, over and over again, by either political party – when both are clearly working for the rich and for corporations, following essentially the exact same long-term agenda of consolidating wealth and control in the hands of the few. Regardless of what they SAY, look at what they DO. And you think Hillary is going to deliver you boons? I’m not even sure she is cynical, I just don’t think she is capable.

          • OldLefty May 24th, 2015 at 7:39 am

I just think it is insane that anyone who has been alive for a while and been paying attention for a while would continually allow themselves to be fooled, over and over again, by either political party

            _______

EVERYBODY says that. The key is paying attention and holding them accountable AFTER the election…when the hard part actually begins.

            Hillary deliver who?

            ANY president deliver ANYONE???

            Of course not. There are 535 members of Congress who ALL have their own agenda;
Some to actually do the right thing.
Some to just stay in Congress by doing the right thing, by pretending to do the right thing while pandering to a particular base, or by just just doing what their leadership or lobbyists tells them will result in votes.

Some to build a resume so that they can cash in with a lobbyist firm.
And some to benefit their own personal fortunes.

Want to put an end to that? Get the money out.
            Money is property, not speech.

          • johnnybizzoy May 25th, 2015 at 8:01 pm

Money will always find a way in. There is no will to enforce laws against rich people.

          • OldLefty May 25th, 2015 at 8:46 pm

            Then don’t whine about it.

I will not cede the future, whether I am successful or not, stirring the will, often takes a lot of time, that has been true of any worthwhile movement.

          • johnnybizzoy May 26th, 2015 at 2:13 am

You would do better to focus on their brains, first. For starters, SO MUCH in our modern environment is retarding and degrading our ability to mature emotionally, or to think critically. These skills are no longer taught in schools, and they are no longer selected for in society. Other skills, such as being a good sycophant, demagogue, boot-licker, or “fronting” well, are what seem to be the traits one needs to rise in our society today. Truly, we are a sick and diseased culture, and we seem to be selecting leaders who mirror those traits, namely, the Bushes and the Clintons. I think folks who’ve mistakenly invested in a politically partisan identity (republican or democrat) are far to willing and eager to forget about right and wrong, as long as their “team is winning the superbowl.” Outside of that, I find it hard to believe any thinking person would vote for a Bush or a Clinton.

          • OldLefty May 26th, 2015 at 7:20 am

SO MUCH in our modern environment is retarding and degrading our ability to mature emotionally, or to think critically.

            _______

That is EXACTLY what WE have been saying since Reagan.
That is EXACTLY what the right wing of this country wants.

          • johnnybizzoy May 28th, 2015 at 1:35 am

            yeesh

          • OldLefty May 28th, 2015 at 6:28 am

If you look back at the opinions of the day, you will find that to be true.

Those on the left have been saying that the trend is for us to be good consumers instead of good citizens since the Powell Memo of 1972.

We have seen the crazy, no compromise tone of the John Birch Society move into the mainstream with Newt Gingrich after Clinton was elected, then to Tea People after the election of barack Obama, while the “compromise equals weakness” meme became a market ploy in mainstream media.

The Tea Party movement was nothing but grift.

How many people know about the influence ALEC, the Mercatus Center, Mackinac Center for Public Policy, Heritage, The Business RoundTable, etc on the policies that the public actually disagree with, enacted in their states by elected officials whom they voted for ?

(and before you bring up similar groups from the left, remember we can point legislation (often in the exact words of these groups) proposed by these groups and how they financially benefit the members of these groups.)
We just had a local election (primary) for mostly judges, and it was like pulling teeth to learn ANYTHING about ANYBODY.
My newspaper used to print a page called “How They Voted” every Friday, with the results of US, state and local legislation and and how YOUR elected officials voted.
Since the “voice vote” has so frequently replaced the roll call vote, they don’t even know any more.
People don’t even know why or how what they voted for did or did not happen.

            Bush or Clinton?
I will vote for Clinton with no hesitation because, I think the composition of the Supreme Court is a bigger issue than anything else since they have written their campaign laws to create the situation that you described, and I believe that she will at least go in the right direction.

          • bpollen May 23rd, 2015 at 6:53 pm

            There is NO democrat party.

There is, however, a DEMOCRATIC Party. So, I guess I join you in wondering what the “democrat party” is.

      • William May 23rd, 2015 at 1:02 pm

So the subject is the expiration of the patriot act, but you really, REALLY need to vent your obsession with gay sex..
Have you considered getting some help with your obsession?
I mean gay sex turrets could be awkward.
You’re at a party or gathering, and people are discussing domestic affairs and politics, and you blurt out something about gay sex.
The good news is this psychosis is probably covered by Obamacare.
        good luck.

        • johnnybizzoy May 23rd, 2015 at 11:13 pm

The two-party paradigm in our political culture is a divide-and-conquer scheme. The democrats and republican use social issues and identity politics to distract their respective constituencies. You and your democrat-leaning ilk are going to vote for Hillary because she is a woman, because you want gay marriage, because of a whole host of things that are peripheral and immaterial. Meanwhile you will ignore and forgive her and the political establishment while it steals away and destroys your rights to freedom on the internet, your rights to privacy, and while they conduct wars in your name against innocent poor people around the world in order to accomplish political objectives and expand the Western empire. You should stop letting your politicians lead you around by the nose, based on these social issues and identity politics – you should have held Obama more accountable. Holding people accountable is how you manage. More liberals would understand that if they bothered to work for a living 😉

          • William May 24th, 2015 at 8:08 am

“Holding people accountable is how you manage.”
The last idiot you people put in the White house lied us into a decade long debacle that nearly bankrupt us and killed 5000 of our best and brightest. If there were any accountability, Cheney and his pet squirrel George would be in prison.
Obama has held himself MORE than accountable.
This is the result of what responsible executive leadership looks like.
As far as gay marriage. I don’t care and it doesn’t effect me. It’s you right wing wackos that scream the loudest against it (right before you come out of the closet or get caught soliciting sex in an airport men’s room stall.
The notion that Dems don’t work is a myth. The red states are also the states that receive more from the federal dole than they put in. Red states also take more in public assistance.
            Look it up.
In the mean time stay bitter.

          • johnnybizzoy May 25th, 2015 at 8:08 pm

Did you read my comment where I said I believe GWB nearly destroyed this country? I oppose Hillary because she is no different than the GOP. How did she vote on that war you cite as having killed off 5000 of our best and brightest?
When it comes to warfare, BOTH PARTIES pursue the agenda of the elite, and that should be extremely obvious. Hillary will not save you, she will not help you, she will not take this country in a different direction than Jeb Bush or Scott Walker. You should accept the truth of that.

      • robert May 23rd, 2015 at 1:29 pm

if we were told to vote democratic we wouldn’t be in a 14 + year war

did your mother have any kids that survived ?

  7. Suzanne McFly May 23rd, 2015 at 8:30 am

Well Mitch tried to pass it until 2 am with no success. So now our hardworking congress is on a break and will come back on the 31st to vote again. They seem to be hoping to somehow get the ones who are currently against it to change their minds. In other words, they are thinking of ways to buy their votes.

  8. oldfart May 23rd, 2015 at 9:14 am

Tell you what, how about we spy on multi-million dollar international corporations and our banking institutions right here at home first and see how that goes ?

    • lynchie May 23rd, 2015 at 10:43 am

Now hold it right there we don’t spy on the job creators or it seems put them in jail when they crash the world economy, but we do however give them $15 trillion for doing it.

  9. OldLefty May 23rd, 2015 at 12:49 pm

The problem is that no one in law enforcement is going to want to give up any “tools” they already have.
Especially in a society where people scare so easily.
