No motive is known in the death of Carrie Jean Melvin.

The suspect is described as a black man in his mid-20s, about 6 feet tall, and wearing a dark hooded jacket.

An LAPD spokeswoman, officer Sara Faden, said the motive for the shooting remained a mystery, with no immediate evidence of whether the killing was a random act of violence or a targeted attack. Police say the shooter targeted Melvin and not her boyfriend but they don’t currently know why.

We just don’t know,’ Homicide Detective Skaggs told the LA Times.

‘On one hand, she didn’t have any known enemies. On the other hand, it looks like it was directed toward her. … We’re looking at all angles.’
