The shootout occurred Saturday morning in Colorado Springs.

One of the dead is the gunman — shot by police — and investigators are combing through a crime scene that spans a wide stretch east of downtown.

At 8:45 a.m., officers responded to a call about shots fired in the 200 block of North Prospect Street, said Colorado Springs Police Department spokeswoman Katherine Buckley.

Officers found a suspect near Platte Avenue and Wasatch Street, Buckley said. The suspect fired multiple shots at the responding officers. .

The police officers returned fire, Buckley said.

Around 2:30 p.m., investigators confirmed that the suspect was dead and announced that three victims are also dead.
