The child might have been preparing for a confrontation with another student.

A student at a Brooklyn middle school was arrested Tuesday when administrators found a gun in his backpack, authorities said.

Police were called to the MS 61 Dr. Gladstone H. Atwell in Crown Heights shortly before 1 p.m. and took the 14-year-old boy into custody after he admitted he was carrying a 9mm pistol in his bag after being confronted by the school staffer.

The employee grew concerned after learning that the boy had confided to another school administrator that he had had a prior confrontation with some kids in the neighborhood who do not attend the school.

That administrator sent an email out to other staffers detailing the conversation he had had with the boy and told them to keep an eye out for any red flags.

Another administrator approached the student and asked him to come into her office so she could ask him about the situation. That’s when the kid admitted to carrying the pistol.
