A registered sex offender in Florida allegedly planned to blow up several Target stores along the East Coast, including one in New York, to get better stock prices.
Mark Barnett, 48, built at least 10 explosive devices and paid another man to place the bombs on shelves, according to a Department of Justice complaint obtained by the Orlando Sentinel.
Barnett believed the explosions would cause Target stock prices to drop, allowing him to buy cheap shares in the company, the newspaper reported.
Authorities believe he paid another man to place the bombs, but officials say the alleged accomplice instead went to authorities. Barnett had paid the man $10,000, according to the newspaper.
“Barnett told the [confidential source] not to let the box bounce around or they would explode,” read the complaint obtained by NBC News. Barnett promised they would not kill anybody, but the explosives would “take your hand off,” according to NBC.
He was charged with “possession of a firearm (destructive device) affecting commerce by a previously convicted felon,” according to NBC News.
