This lovely August morning yielded one of the most extraordinary moments we have ever seen on the Sunday morning political talk shows.

FOX News Sunday’s Chris Wallace, during an interview with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, brought up a UN committee’s condemnation of the Trump Administration’s “failure at the highest political level… to unequivocally reject and condemn the racist, violent events and demonstrations,” and Trump’s refusal to do so – but continued willingness to trash the press (including some video footage of Trump claiming the “fake news” was giving racists a platform).

Tilllerson’s answer left us with our jaws on the floor.

“The president speaks for himself, Chris.”

Keep in mind that this is one of the ever-choreographed, talking-point-infused, sending-ultra-subtle messages Sunday Beltway political talk shows.

Multiply that by Tillerson’s referencing not of the administration but “the American people” and the result is that Tillerson has gone rogue.

UPDATE – NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER:  Tillerson’s terse, blunt “speaks for himself” reply is unprecedented. Never has a sitting Secretary of State – for that matter, any cabinet member – so succinctly distanced him- or herself from a sitting President. As a friend who works on defense-related issues Capitol Hill told me early this afternoon via text,

[Tillerson] just detonated a daisy-cutter in DT’s tochas.
