Salon’s Chauncey deVega recently interviewed Republican insider Bruce Bartlett for his podcast. Among the in-depth observations about Trump and the actions of Republicans (and conservatives) in reaction to his presidency, there was this jaw-dropping exchange:

deVega: How did today’s Republican Party, in your estimation, become the way it is? Can it be saved?

Bartlett: The Republican Party needs to die. It’s already a zombie. It’s brain dead.

Bartlett’s comment comes as incumbents on Capitol Hill are abruptly retiring, the GOP “Civil War” comes home to roost at the state level, women quit the GOP en masse, and a number of prognosticators, including the much respected Charlie Cook, predict a 2018 Democratic election tsunami.

Heckuva job, GOP leadership!
