People of color face harsher treatment in court.
Blacks are more likely to be
sentenced to prison for the same crime than Whites. One third of people of
color sentenced to prison would have received a shorter or non-incarcerative
sentence if they had been treated in court the same way as White defendants
facing similar charges.
Racial Inequalities in our
criminal justice system
Although
Black Americans make up only 12.7% of the U.S. population, they make up 48.2%
of adults in federal, state, or local prisons and jails. According to the 1998
federal National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA), 72% of users were
White and 15% were Blacks.
Latinos
represent just 11.1% of the U.S. population and only 10% of U.S. drug users,
yet are 18.6% of the U.S. prison population and 22.5% of those convicted for
drug offenses.
On
average, 1 in 25 adult American Indians is under the jurisdiction of the
nation’s criminal justice system – more than twice the number of White adults
in the system.
42.5%
of prisoners on Death Row are Black, more than three times the percentage of
Black Americans in the national population.
In
2003, in the United States, White people were imprisoned at a rate of 376 per every
100,000 in the population, compared to 709 per 100,000 American Indians, 997
per 100,000 Latinos and 2,526 per 100,000 Blacks in the population.
Black
males have a 32% chance of serving time in prison at some point in their lives;
Hispanic males have a 17% chance; White males have a 6% chance. If
current rates of incarceration continue, about 1 in 3 Black males, 1 in 6
Hispanic males and 1 in 17 White males are expected to go to prison at some
point during their lives.
Black youth are more likely to be detained than White
youth. Moreover, Black youth with no prior admissions were six times more
likely to be incarcerated in a juvenile facility than a White youth with a
similar history. Latino youth were three times more likely to be imprisoned.
Among persons over age 24, Blacks (11.2%) were
significantly more likely to be pulled over while driving than Whites (8.9%).
Among drivers stopped for speeding, Blacks (75.7%)
and Hispanics (79.4%) were more likely than Whites (66.6%) to be ticketed
Police were more likely to conduct a search of the
vehicle and/or driver in traffic stops involving Black male drivers (15.9%) or
Hispanic male drivers (14.2%), compared to White male drivers (7.9%).

The prosecutor couldn’t prove intent. Without looking the case up, I’m willing to bet that the defense claimed that this was a “heat of the moment” incident where anger overcame judgement.

She did have an advocate in the prosecutor. But our system of justice isn’t predicated on vengeance and “sounds good to me”, it is built on the presumption of innocence and the burden of proof falling on the prosecuting authority.

This is of course just the tip of the iceberg. While I prefer not to follow the rightwing media (due to the general ugliness of their rhetoric), I’m pretty sure this kind of threat is a constant trickle. What it must be like for the President and First Lady to live under such an onslaught of hatred! I know that all public figures are subject to this to some extent, but the hatred for this President probably (for obvious reasons) exceeds anything seen before. I admire both of them enormously for remaining calm and cool, and continuing to do their job as well as they can in the face of GOP obstruction.

Hummm liberal policies that allow murderers out among us by reducing their sentences and pleading down their crimes along with allowing seriously mentally ill people with track records of dangerous behaviors to roam the streets because institutionalizing them is mean… People on here calling for the secret service to restrict the right to free speech… Not very sound or logical ideas if you lover your rights to be both free and secure.
I’ve never seen anything on any real Tea Party site with any racist statements or threats as mainly those folks are about reducing government interference in our lives by returning to following our Constitution and having as much individual freedom as possible while demanding personal responsibility and accountability by enforcing our laws equally without giving politicians “royal” status to pick and choose which laws they will choose to follow. We all should have an equal chance to succeed or fail based on our individual choices we make in life.
I think the current state of our nation is showing the liberal policies aren’t working so great while the Republicans haven’t been doing much better. Ultimately it seems the main problem we have is the bloated political class and our bloated government system that are doing a great deal of harm to the middle class backbone of our country. We have to enforce our immigration laws and bring jobs back to America for American citizens! Some folks might need a hand up but no more lifetime hand outs as all but the most severely disabled can be be put to some useful task. Politicians stealing our Social Security for other purposes and the manipulation of our financial system by the Federal Reserve along with using the IRS to terrify regular citizens hasn’t made our lives a shining example the home of the free lately.

This man threatened both the President AND the First Lady. It’s time to stop downplaying Michelle Obama and the equally heinous and unacceptable threats to her life. Or the endless personal attacks on her person that would have brought many to their knees by now. A Maryland police officer assigned as a detail to her motorcade, threatened to kill her if given the chance to use his gun. He’s still at his job – as a police officer. As a matter of fact, Michelle Obama has been more personally attacked, threatened, demeaned and insulted than her husband, but that seems to be completely overlooked, or casually dismissed. Read through any right-wing site or right-wing comments on mainstream articles, and as much as they mock and disrespect President Obama, it is the black First Lady for whom they reserve the vilest and most vicious attacks, hateful insults and dehumanizing treatment ever meted out to any public figure. The racist attacks on her go bone deep. They’re hateful, personal, cutting, palpable. They tear her apart, attack her physically, root against her marriage, want her dead. They smear and slander her in the most vicious ways. They’ll even side with President Obama for a moment if only to savage his wife. But where there’s immediate outcry, fury, expressions of disgust and concern over threats to his life, where’s the same for her? Where’s the outcry, concern or support for his unfairly maligned and equally threatened wife who never asked for or wanted this life for herself or her young family in the first place?

i am completely appalled–and stunned, really–about the full-blown racism directed toward her–and the girls…the most vicious rumor is that she’s actually a man, and they “stole” the kids from africa—i actually saw that written down, with a name attached to it…unfuckingbelievable…i was terribly naive and apparently blind to the deep-seated thread of ugliness that exists in this country–and i’m southern! i never knew there were so many–they have hidden it well…

We currently have the worst Congress EVER and Republicans collecting paychecks for having spent at least 6 YEARS of OBSTRUCTING this President and destroying the country. Actually, throw in the additional 8 years of the Bush regime and give him his title of “King George” because that’s what we had. REPUBLICANS have been stealing from the Middle Class and moving the money all to the 1%. Get educated. The people with the “lifetime handouts” is the do-nothing politicians who continue to protect their opportunity to continue to RAID our Treasury, RAID Social Security, TAKE BAILOUTS, TAX CUTS, OIL SUBSIDIES, FARM SUBSIDIES, etc. Believe me, it’s NOT the little people who are draining this country.
