A Missouri woman was shot in the face by a stray bullet while celebrating Independence Day after someone fired a gun into the air. Jan Brewer said, “I just felt this baseball bat type thing hit me in the face.”

While celebrating with her husband, she was hit in the face with what she thought at the time might be fireworks, she explained.

It wasn’t until she went to a local hospital where X-rays confirmed a bullet was in her cheek, according to KMOV.

“I have nothing against people owning guns. That’s their right,” Brewer said. “It’s the responsibility they should take when they own a gun. That’s my biggest concern. Once you own a gun, you should take responsibility to do the right thing.”

According to Brewer and her husband, the bullet likely came from far off where it was possibly shot in the air to celebrate the Fourth of July.

According to St. Louis City Health Official Pamela Walker, on Independence Day alone, 8 people were treated for firework related injuries, bringing the total firework related injuries for the weekend to 17.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirms they are investigating, but have not found who it was that fired a gun into the air.

“I’m just thankful to be here,” Brewer said. “Because one inch up and it would have taken my eye out. One inch lower it would have hit my throat. But it hit the bone and lodged in the side of my face.”

This is one of the reasons why warning shots are frowned upon. What goes up must come down. Even though Myth-Busters did an entire episode of what would happen if you fired a bullet straight into the air, would a falling bullet reach terminal velocity to kill someone. The problem is, nobody aver fires in a direct 90 degree angle. Any variation and what you have is an arc with a bullet that is still traveling at deadly speeds.

Then again, there is the “Joe Biden” defense for shooting 2 blasts into the air with a Double Barrel Shotgun ??

Yeah, that was astoundingly bad advice from Joe “uncle Jed” Biden, I must say.

The thing is, there are (as I am sure you know) special shells for shotguns that enable them to join in the fireworks fun. But, again, they have been subject to ‘bans” in different areas, *sigh*.

There are even “safety flares” for a 12 gauge, that would be much safer than firing a live shell, or worst of all, a slug, into the air – good grief.
